James and Rosalinda both get props from me because they're obscure tracks, and 2 of my favorite. Both 52nd Street and Turnstiles have great intros. I've Loved These Days and Miami 2017 could get honorable mention!
I got back into an obsession with Billy Joel's music after his new song dropped! Thank you for including Summer Highland Falls, it was the FIRST song I thought of when I saw this video
+1 for "Rosalinda's Eyes." Tricky intro that leads into a very beautiful and singable ballad. Also love the drum pattern on the way out! I'd add "Stiletto," for the drama and interplay between piano, organ, and claps!
Billy is sooo versatile and passionate! You can hear it in his piano playing and you can certainly hear his inspiration in a real fan!!! You have that! Anyone can “play” the intros but you PLAY the intros! Thanks so much for the video!
New York State Of Mind is my all time favourite from Billy Joel. I’m trying to learn it to play on piano. Difficult to get it right but I keep on practicing.
Have fun with it! I was so satisfied when I got it under my fingers and memorized several years back. If you want a tip, maybe spend a good amount of time on the Bridge (once in awhile I find those changes a little tricky to remember) since the main section repeats so much.
Good Day Mate from downunder Australia! Really enjoy your lessons. The fact that you include notation with to the point explanation of music theory, that you demonstrate with such a natural & somewhat easy to understand method coupled with simplicity at times & made easy to put immediately & effectively into practice. I have a couple of song requests. Would really appreciate your artistic demonstration with regards to song requests. Artist/Group: Michael Jackson Song Title: - She's Out Of My Life - Lady In My Life Artist/Group: Commodores Song Title: Easy (Like Sunday Morning) Artist/Group: Prince Song Title: Little Red Corvette Artist/Group: Adel Song Title: Someone Like You
Everyone of those 10 songs are on my set list. But one that is missing is "Last of the Big Time Spenders" - first on my list, and so fun to both sing and play.
Great list! For me personally I would have to include Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, but like you said there are dozens and dozens of his songs all qualified to be on a list like this.
Billy is sooo versatile and passionate! You can hear it in his piano playing and you can certainly hear his inspiration in a real fan!!! You have that! Anyone can “play” the intros but you PLAY the intros! Thanks so much for the video!i fully agree about James! I never hear anything about it
As the countdown went on, I was waiting eagerly and getting a little worried...until you hit #1! I need to learn more of these, but that's my favorite as well. I felt so accomplished as a pianist when I ever memorized that whole song and got performing it regularly in my repertoire. I feel like it's a great way to exhibit some chops -- fun to play instrumentally or to sit nicely for my voice.
These are great, Pierre! I see you have tutorials on "Just the way..." and "Movin' Out", I'd love to learn the intro to, "New York...". Do you have a tutorial on that that maybe I missed? I'd love to see you do a tutorial on that. Thanks!
Fantastic! Interestingly you featured so many BJ songs from, in my opinion his greatest album - Turnstiles. I’ve learned many of Billy’s songs - except Rosalinda’s Eyes - I find that one too hard. Summer, Highland Falls is my absolute favourite BJ song - it’s just perfect, and very rewarding to play. James is also a fantastic song - lovely chord voicings.
A few more piano/keyboard intros that REALLY stand out for me: This Is the Time And So It Goes Tomorrow Is Today Laura (reminiscent of "Lucy in the Sky...")
And So It Goes is so intriguing because of how sparse and repetitious it is. It's stoic and matter-of-fact, and when the themes change harmonically, it's very slight, not really straying much from what it had been (probably a commentary on life through the accompaniment).
How do you cut this down to 10? Almost an impossible task. I appreciate your video, so thank you! I can't believe you didn't have the piano intro to Only the Good Die Young on there. One of my personal favorites (and a song I don't hear too many people talking about) is Everybody Loves You Now...the piano is so dang energetic. Again, thanks for doing this!
Turnstiles is arguably his most perfect album in that there’s not one bad song on it. The Stranger may have better songs but i have to skip over Get It Right the First Time every listen through.
@@pierrejpiscitelli I have several videos filmed in Montauk, and My father Robert wrote a song called Montauk, and the Montauk Library did an article about my father for Throwback Thursday a couple years ago called The Fisherman. 🌊 🏄♂ 🏖
I'll add a few honorable mentions Stilletto Ain't No Crime Streetlife Serenader And So it Goes Ballad of Billy the Kid And of course the Prelude to Angry Young Man (which probably should have been on your list). I'd swap Rosalinda's Eyes for Prelude
Thought for sure you were going to play the Prelude to Angry Young Man, but I see in the comments why you skipped it…time to get a real piano? 😉 (BJ was the first concert I ever went to, probably around 1977/78. Great concert.) Thanks for this video, Pierre!
@@pierrejpiscitelli , ain’t it the truth! But you’d be surprised what you might find on the used market. Besides, who needs a house when you got a nice piano! Priorities!
Is "Angry Young Man" really difficult or is it more of a gimmick skill to play that intro? It sounds super cool and the song is excellent as a whole, so i always wondered if the average player could pull off that intro or if its a expert level technique. Id love to see it demonstrated. Ive never actually seen it played. Thanks for all your videos Pierre! They are always a joy to experience.
Very Nice, perfect... but a slight disappointment because wanted to see and observe the notes you brilliantly played (both hands), but the camera shifted from top to side, which was really heartbreaking. Anyways excellent job. If you ever decide to re-edit the video, that would be just great!!!
I typically save that for the tutorial videos. I have several of these songs available as tutorials on the channel! This particular video just focuses on introductions.
Angry Young Man is a really fun one to play
Only after the first 20 seconds 😇
yes how is that not on this?? And Root Beer Rag?
miami 2017 is fantastic too
How about “Miami 2017 (The Lights Went Out On Broadway)(?)
❤❤ and Dozen of others. Every BJ song is unique and beautiful! There I’ve said it!!!❤❤

Dropped? I’m disappointed that he really didn’t write it, but it’s fun to play.
+1 for "Rosalinda's Eyes." Tricky intro that leads into a very beautiful and singable ballad. Also love the drum pattern on the way out!
I'd add "Stiletto," for the drama and interplay between piano, organ, and claps!
As a singer New York State of Mind is a song I have sung at gigs for years. It never gets old - one of my favorites. Good choice for #1

lol your Stage Rhodes with the DX7 on top was my setup in 1984
Vienna is by far my favorite BJ song of all time.
The Stranger is a little masterpiece.
Hey Maestro! How about a whole tutorial of the FANTASTIC song James🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I wish you added that virtual keyboard to these so one can learn them. ❤your channel.
Ballad of Billy the Kid from Songs in The Attic.

Oh, and on fourth place in my set list is "Everybody Has a Dream". For the same reasons as above.
Big Man on Mulberry Street is one cool intro very jazzy for Billy, and or Minor Variation from River of Dreams cd, 90's era.
Fabulous, Pierre. Your playing is, of course, perfection and with feeling -- and the whole collection is a joy to journey through with you. Thank you
🙏🏻

Totally, that was absolutely a top contender for me!
I'm a huge Billy Joel fan... on a different note will you please teach 'This will be ' (an everlasting love) by Natalie Cole. Thank you.

EXACTLY what I needed 🙏 one week left of my vacation in a rainy Stockholm. Perfect!
just the way you are...... best for me
Just a question. Can you do a review of the Cp61? Thinking of buying it
Love your DX7 red sticker! :-)
Haha! A friend put that there as a joke years ago.
please make a tutorial video of "My life",thanks.
Great list!
Can you also teach how to play Souvenir?
Great list, but one of my favourite intros is Honesty, which I can't believe you didn't include.
Oh it's one of the best. There could easily be 5 more top ten lists that are equally as good!
@pierrejpiscitelli Yes, very true. Great channel enjoying the videos, keep them coming.

Ain't no crime!!!
Epic list and almost identical order of my favs too!
Just wonderful 🙏
Great❤
Thank you Pierre! Your videos are awesome!
Part 2 and 3 please 😁
James is a great track.....kinda reminds me of Daniel by Elton John. Both played on a Rhodes.
Only the good die young
Thanks!

Angry Young Man translates poorly on any keyboard, or thru any midi plugin! It just never works out-- I need an old upright piano for that :)
Beautiful selection..I was expecting “Lullabye” as well 😢
Love that one!

It’s sort of a gimmick, but the song itself is wonderful!
Well, my two favorite Billy Joel songs did not make the list: Scenes from an Italian Restaurant and And So it Goes.
Not a technically amazing Intro but one that always sounds musical and fresh to me is Only the Good Die Young. It would be in my top 10.
i dunno if you done it already, the intro to Van Halen's Right Now?
Not yet
Hello, is that a DX7 that was on top of the Rhodes it looks to have a wooden looking exterior? Does it?
It is a DX7.

Billy Joel intros and no "Miami 2017" or "Prelude/Angry Young Man" Huh?
Had to pick 10. There are countless fantastic examples.
