I listen to youtube videos as if it were a podcast, so I don't care about the production quality, and I'm here for long-form content talking about books in any shape, way or form you choose to. Thank you for all your hard work analyzing literature from a critical perspective ❤
I was just talking to a friend about how YT trends more recently have been people watching or listening to YT on their TVs vs their phones. Or treating it like you do as something to play in the background as you listen. It's really interesting to consider for the future of this space. And thank you so much!
The nail in the coffin for tiktok for me was the comments sections. I love reading your comments here on RUclips it feels like you've cultivated a community, and getting to read those essay-length comments on discussion videos is a part of the experience of the video. And you just can't on tiktok. I frequently got super frustrated by character limits on there, too, and having to either say my peace in parts or shrink what was once a substantial comment into a 150 character nothing burger
Even when I have the time to respond to my TT in multiple parts, then they get all jumbled. You can't even reading them in order to make sense. The format and function of TT comments truly is just encouraging everyone to drop a joke or insult and move on.
I had a booktube for a hot sec before I made my booktok- mostly for the reasons you mentioned about there being a lower barrier to entry. I’ve been much more successful on booktok than booktube and it’s a huge bummer, especially since I never really found my stride on the tube. This video was super comforting and gives me motivation to keep making videos. Thank you ❤
Glad to see you here because I don't think I would ever move to TT regardless. I like longer form content to keep me company at work, and I like the nuance that allows. I also am kind of wary of algorithm- controlled, short-form content, specifically. It is a legit dopamine addiction. I'm one of those cusp millennial/xennials, and I have watched that kind of content create an endless dopamine-seeking kind of behavior in some of my loved ones, to the point that it interferes in face-to-face time with them. I do get what you're saying about the platform doing the work for content creators, which to me is a very high contrast attribute, high gains, but sharp negatives as well. Pre-algorithm internet was a much more active user experience, but now we are not only less active participants also have very little control over the way we are fed info and for what purposes. (Company profits, etc.) That's somewhat the price of "free" things, but it's getting out of hand and affecting our society as a whole, and I'm leery of how this will continue. For now, am just enjoying what I can in the least harmful way I can, and trying to be mindful of what the algorithms are amplifying in my life. I like your videos because they are particularly thoughtful. You're engaging my critical thinking skills. (Edited for typos.)
I'd been active for a few years in a 2000+ person nail polish discord server that got nuked by the admin with no warning back in spring of this year, and I've become very aware of how quickly any of my communities can vanish since.
I had people in my Discord who were part of that community as well, so I followed all of that secondhand. It's true that really anything online can vanish. It's making me think a lot about how and where I'm connecting with people!
I had been considering moving to RUclips for a while anyway, so heres to the start of a new year. I'm glad i found you here, you always have the most interesting content.
I found you on tiktok, then pretty quickly decided the platform wasn't for me, so I came to find you on RUclips. I'd be thrilled to see you more active on this side of the internet ❤❤❤
I think personally RUclips will always be superior to me. You have to put more thought into what you put on here. You have to (as you said) engage more with the community. While the algorithm and views on TikTok are better, I think that's the blessing in disguise for YT is that we have smaller audiences, which, for me, is less overwhelming.
Seeing how much TikTok changes without an American audience will be interesting. I follow you and many Americans, but Americans only make up 10 percent of my audience. Most of my followers are from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. (I'm from NZ) I was concerned about the ban and worried that it might impact the publishing of my debut novel next year, but I realized that the community I built on the TikTok platform would change little. I will miss your content and other US book accounts and authors, but it's reassuring to find you and others here or on IG, although it will be different.
I so much appreciate your takes on these things! Thank you for your many years of time and energy and thoughts on BookTube. I have avoided TikTok because the idea of being “fed” content gives me the ick, but I also recognize that it’s a platform where a lot of people find great stuff. I am definitely making the low key yappy and mid quality videos I want in the world
i dont use tik tok (yet) but i am interested in making a youtube channel and moving away from being anonymous. i have less desire to be viral or famous but i'm at a point in my life where I don't necessarily want the anonymity as much as the community. Also, I hope more opportunities open up for people to make sustainable money online. Everyone doesn't have to become an influencer but there are also a lot of new jobs popping up that could benefit from diverse minds.
I went from being anon online when I was just writing blogs to not being anon online when I started making RUclips videos. Pros and cons to each, to be honest. I think as long as you are being safe about not revealing too much identifying information, it can be worth making content and making the connections!
I have been on bookTok for a few years, and have absolutely loved my time there. I post things about, books, and writing, and things I love. With that said, I feel like moving to a platform here will be hard as a video editor, and such. I got my foot in the door when it comes to my writing, and I would hate to lose that. I’m sure I will adjust, but it’s still hard to think about. Thanks for giving me a space to vent. And I hope everyone is having a nice day.
This is the first video I’m watching from you and you hit all the points about TikTok, RUclips, comments and building community. This is just to say thank you for your time and effort in sparking discussion!
I tried TikTok for about a week and was frustrated with the content the shoved at me. I heard the more you watch the better it gets but I wasn't invested in the platform to waste my time on it. I am sad that Instagram has changed so much. No dates on things - you never know when it was posted. Never chronological. I would love a better platform for creators and supporters.
It definitely has a learning curve, but it truly felt worth it because the algorithm was PRECISE. There has been so much amazing content that's come out of TT over the last years, and it has certainly influenced content outside of the platform, too. And I agree with Instagram. I'll start looking at stories until I'm pissed off and then I'll try my feed and it's unusable.
I appreciated being able to quickly make videos and edit them on TikTok bc I don’t have any equipment for making the quality videos on booktube. I do agree, having my content on characters of color pushed to anyone and everyone made it a chore to have real convos with people that actually *want* to have those discussions. The algorithm helped and hurt at the same time.
Yes, exactly this! A blessing and a curse. I do think that if you were recording on your phone and editing on CapCut or something similar, those are skills you could translate to RUclips, if you wanted!
Surprised to hear RUclips comments were the best! 😮 I'm not on tiktok and hadn't realised it was even getting banned 😅 RUclips is probably the only platform I hop on regularly, mainly cos they've made it so easy to watch it from anywhere (inc my tv). There's so much diverse content on here, including a lot of free tv shows, and it's easy to spend too much time on it 😂
I KNOW. I mean, that is not to say RUclips comments are without fault. Any internet comments can quickly turn into a violent or garabge place. But just sort of average experience in a comment section? The format and function of TT comments make them out-the-gate annoying.
I understand the ban on TikTok is a political thing, which is why I don’t care for it. But I wish our government had attacked the issue from the perspective of prohibiting these social medias from acting like online shops slot machines. TikTok is a disgusting platform that prioritizes user retention and marketability over nuance and community.
I fear that many short form platforms are the same. I'd even say anything with an algorithm is going to lean toward content that is more click bait than nuance. TikTok was a perfect storm of a lot of problems that all social media has during a time where anti-intellectualism is going up and media literacy is going down.
TikTok’s algorithm is slowly devolving into the “rage bait” model of Twitter which makes it exhausting to use. I would have to search a creator whose content I want ti see bc I know the algorithm will piss me off
This all reminds me of when Vine died and Viners came over to RUclips from there. Granted a lot of the Viners that came over turned out to be awful people, but it's still the same thing. Reminder that the Paul Brothers, Jessi Smiles, Liza Koshi, David Dobrik, and Gabbie Hanna were all Viners that came over and found great success on RUclips
There is something so comforting about snark squad (website) still being up and running, still having that classic look and being fully functioning with all the old posts + comments. I still sometimes go back and look at those buffy recaps if I’m doing a rewatch and want to see the girls’ thoughts on certain episodes 🤍
yes - let's bring back yappy youtube in 2025!
YAPPY! YAPPY! YAPPY!

@@mynameismarinesReally! Small world. At least two 2.0 servers rose from the ashes of that one that I'm in, but there might be more.
I love you having this conversation with us. I absolutely hate TikTok so I won’t be going there, but I do enjoy your content over here on RUclips!

RUclips shorts are really their own world compared to regular RUclips when it comes to the comments 😭

I'm all in for low quality yaps as long as they are interesting 😁
Naturally!

Thank you so much!! I'm glad it resonated. ♥️
Love your genius brain as always!!
So nice to hear from you on here and i agree that cultivating small communities has felt so good this year. ❤
Always great to see you! And I feel like the next 4 years will mostly be survivable with real, quality communities ❤

I'm only 5 min into the video ! Love it so far. I wonder how people who migrate from Tik Tok to Booktube will shift the type of content on here.
as an OG RUclips watcher, I am excited to see more long-form bookish content from people that I have discovered through TikTok
I found you on tik tok but I prefer longer yappy videos, so I immediately came to follow you here ❤❤❤

Same. I use YT for:
- music
- audiobooks
- tvshows/movies
- video essays
- podcasts
Im never bored on here.

Happy to represent the low-effort yappers here on booktube 😂
