In the 00s, my mum visited the Holy Lands meeting Christians living in both Israel and Palestine. She returned angry. Having originally believed the media that this was an equal conflict, she then saw with her own eyes the oppression that Palestinians faced every day at the hands of Israel. What upset her the most was a visit to an orphanage that regularly had no electricity or water due to Israel cutting lines to that area for no reason. For fun, perhaps. Or for power. I don't understand why people believe this 'war' began last year when Palestine has suffered for decades.

At least for Americans (speaking as one), part of it is the lack of education about this and other such topics, at least in general courses even in well funded areas. When ones knowledge is such a blank slate, it's easy for that slate to get written on it with untruths. It wasn't until CrashCourse History came out and did an episode on the conflict that I even got an inkling of the history and how much more it was.

I am a palastinian that was born in Jordan since me and my family can't go back home. I am very grateful that the internet now seems more empathetic with palestinians than ever. Our gratefulness as palestinians (especially ones that live outside of palestine) doesn't stop at how much we feel heard now, but also the the warming comfort of sometimes sitting down and take a breath, since I feel like I have been fighting the battel of being accepted for who I am my whole life.
Not to mention that I live in germany and mentioning that I was palestinian was completely out of question for me and others few years ago but now I have been seeing people of all races wearing the koffieh in public places. I still don't feel comfortable saying that I am palestinian to anyone, but I have been feeling a level of hope that I never thought I would have.

When I was around 14, I read the autobiography of a survivor of the Warsaw ghetto under Nazi occupation. A few years later, a young doctor from my home town was on the news describing the conditions in Israeli occupied West Bank. The stories were almost identical, particularly the ones about very young children risking (and losing) their lives to squeeze through small gaps in fences to scavenge for food for their families. I have never understood how a people who endured such atrocities could then inflict the same on others. This was in the 1980s. What is happening now is a million times worse 😢

How people who endured those atrocities could inflict the same on others? It is because that is how human beings learn. People who are abused learn to abuse others.
The founders of Israel learned all the wrong lessons from the Holocaust and what they mean when they use the phrase "Never Again" is not what people thought it meant, it doesn't mean that they will never again allow genocide to occur, but instead it is a call to arms saying that never again will they allow their people to be attacked without retaliating 10 or 100 times more viciously against whoever dared to attack them.

Not only are people suffering and dying in the most inhumane ways - their children and children's children will bear the scars of this atrocity (at least those lucky enough to live through this). None of these people should be dying. None of these children should be starving. None of this should be happening...again.

If it helps, remember that not talking about it for a night does not mean you don't care or that it isn't still important. You aren't trying to win, much less win a fight - you're trying to help the people of Palestine live dignified lives.

A rant for the algorithm: I'm American and the endless and ridiculous loyalty that the US has for Israel is utterly disgusting. I am extremely pissed and also feeling kind of powerless of my tax dollars being used to destroy these people's lives. I seriously hope that all western countries, or those who are on the correct side of history, come together and condemn not just Israel, but hold the US just as accountable. Burnout is real. Please find a way to engage with this sustainably. I burnt myself out so badly that I was a liability for other activists for a while. Ask yourself, is what I'm doing productive? Is it helping anyone? How can I better direct my energy? Then do that. I could not stand more footage, I still have images scorched into my brain. It would take me out for days of crying. So I just don't. I try to stay informed but focus on what I can do, even if it's just a few bucks to organizers who are able to do more than I can in the moment

Another thing that can help with apathy is giving yourself time away from news stations and if possible, time away from social media. A constant flow of horrific news that makes you feel small and helpless can burn you out so fast. Taking a day or two a week to completely disconnect has been helping me regulate myself and re-ground myself so that I can go back to it with additional energy. It is of course a privilege to even be able to take a break, but it is one that we can take part in so that we can give our all to doing what we can.

You don't need to be on the internet all day learning about atrocities you can't do anything about, just donate and protest whenever you can. Doing either of those things imo makes you way more useful to the cause than someone who sits on the internet all day debating people and trying to make them see brown people as humans.

Thank you Tara for highlighting what disabled people in Gaza are going through. As a disabled Westerner I think about them all the time, and feel so guilty about the accident of birth that means I’m here in a safe warm home while they suffer through unspeakable horrors. I think about the people of all ages who have lost limbs and now need to adjust to a new life without access to rehab, prosthetics or mobility aids, and in many cases without any surviving family to support them. I think about those with severe chronic illnesses like mine, and how the hell they must be coping without any medication or even a warm bed to sleep in. I think about how Gaza already had the highest rate of childhood PTSD in the world even before this jennaside began, and how much worse it must be now. My heart breaks for them daily. What else are we supposed to do? The powerful aren't just complicit, they are directly responsible. What do you think the war itself is for?
Global rising prosperity is a lie, an illusion. There always have to be populations worse off and in sh.ttier conditions. To do our labour, to give us their resources for cheap etc.
If they're not worse off by nature, then by force. Wars are great for the weapons industry. Weapons are great for taking other people's resources. Resources are great for the economy.
War is great for the economy.
Of course the powerful make sure the poor devour eachother or have nothing to help eachother with. It's always been that way.

And for those of us who are only watching this from a screen and not experiencing it personally, you’re very right: apathy is (very privileged and) not an option but community is.
The fact that it is still ongoing is heart-shattering, and it shows the greed of those in power to “support” whatever benefits them the most personally. The censoring is on full display though.

The point of personal relatability being the entry point for empathy is so fucking true. Here in Sweden we have a charity event called Musikhjälpen that runs for one week in december every year and is televized. Last year the goal was to help people who were starving in eastern Africa. They had sent a reporter there to interview people and I remember when they were in Ethiopia, and sure, it was sad and I understood the situation was grim, but it was still so easy to subconsciously disconnect, like it didn't have anything to do with me.
And then they interviewed this super thin, young, starving Somali mother and suddenly it all became so, so much more real. There are a lot of Somalis in Sweden. I grew up around Somalis. One of the hosts of Musikhjälpen that year was Somali. That woman could have been the sister of my highschool classmate. It became so much more immediate, like just like that. So yeah, that stuff is really, really important and thank you for pointing it out.

As she's talked about how disabled people are affected in Palestine right now, here are some good things I've learned about disabilities since I've been in a wheelchair:
Most wheelchair users are ambulatory, meaning they can stand and/or walk short distances, but still need their wheelchairs.
Physiotherapy can be really fun especially as a group, when I was in a clinic for my tetraplegia and had to do a lot of physio, we had some group activities, and they often let me put the music on, because I grew up listening to my dad's favorites from the 70's I'd usually ask for some of those, most of the people in the clinic were older and really enjoyed some 70's bangers, it kept everyone's moral up and made it easier to workout through the pain.
And to leave you off with some good news because this video was hard to watch, after almost a full year of hard work, my wheelchair is going to be able to go to someone who really needs it, I got cleared by the docs to use crutches from now on!

Edit: furthermore, ever since I began to grow more educated on Palestine in the past couple of years, I often think of a quote by James Baldwin, which is as follows, "I am terrified at the moral apathy- the death of the heart which is happening in my country. These people have deluded themselves for so long that they really don't think I'm human." This is something that really grounds me whenever it comes to mind, whenever I feel those around me are trying to normalise the increasing apathy to the plight of those not just in Palestine, but in Sudan and DRC, West Papua and all those oppressed in all corners od the world. I also believe it ties into Tara's point on humanisation; that these people are people and go beyond numbers or statistics, but are those with dreams just like us.

What you talked about with the lottery of birth and how sobering it is to think about how different their lives are... I feel that every single day when I see the images from there. I was born on the same day as Motaz Azaiza who has, in our short 25 years on earth, experienced so much incredible hardship, so much pain, seen so many people die... While only wanting to be a photographer capturing the beauty of his home and the people there. Him talking about how homesick he is, I cannot stop myself from crying, not just being homesick but also knowing that the places you miss so much are currently filled with suffering, have been destroyed beyond recognition where truly "going back there" is impossible. We have had the same amount of time and it is just not fair, its injust.

I live in Portugal, an ally of Israel, and a country that serves the interests of the US and EU by allowing this genocide to continue. I think about Gaza every single day, and I will forever do what is in my reach to fight against the actions of my government, and for the freedom of the children of Gaza to grow up and experience adulthood. guilt and hopelessness are what oppressors WANT you to feel so that you back yourself into a corner and think that it is completely impossible to fight back, this can be extended to pretty much everything and not just palestine but its still insanely important to remember
protests, revolutions, and fights for freedom and progress are never successful when they're backed with nothing but doom and gloom. i know this sounds like a corny moral from a kids show but its true, we need to have hope no matter what because without it we won't get anywhere

I am someone who is paralyzed by anxiety in my daily life. I am so, so afraid of so many things in the world around me, and I am so, so exhausted by my fear. I try my best to still maintain my sense of care about these sorts of issues that are far from me, because I know they matter, and I manage through regular donations and the like, but it's so, so hard for me to engage with these sorts of issues beyond that because I'm paralyzed by fear that even a fraction of the same hardship will affect me and the ones I love, given the changing state of the world. I nearly didn't click on this video because I knew it would paralyze me even more, and it did, but I'm also glad I watched. I've been feeling myself become more disconnected recently because of how much stress I've been under on top of my default anxiety levels, and I hate being that way. I wanna think about other people and what they need, I don't wanna spend so much time drowning in my own fears and my own needs. There are people who deserve to live dying while I'm afraid of being hurt. I'll be donating what I can again today, I hope that makes any kind of difference.

Working for this cause teaches people that no single person can fight for Palestine alone. When one person is unable to carry the load, we’ll carry it for you. And sometimes, when you’re able, you can carry it too for someone else. 76 years of brutal occupation is a long time. Those of us who have been in this for a while will tell you that it’s easy to let it consume you. We need to do this together so we can fight for many years to come, until Palestine is free. We’re no use to the cause when we’re burnt out, so please know that you’re doing the right thing when you take the time you need so when the batten gets passed to you, your hands are free to grab it to pass it to the next person. I hope that makes you, or anybody else reading this who needs to, feel better.

    • @Li-Fu7

It's a very dangerous thought spiral to fear fear or be anxious about anxiety, but I sympathize and understand it well. Just keep pushing through it and expanding that comfort zone. These things are rarely as hard as we think them to be, but I say that knowing it's not easy for you either. One day it will be, though. You're stronger than you give yourself credit for, and I know that because I've known what it's like dealing with that torrent of thoughts and stress. If you're still pushing through, that's strength, but our minds can only take so much before they can't carry anything more. I hope you can find a way to lessen that load, so you can choose what you want to carry.

Thank you for using your platform and privilege to talk about this. Here is a fact for the algorithm about snow. One of the determining factors in the shape of individual snowflakes is the air temperature around it. The study of flakes has identified that long, thin needle-like ice crystals form at around -2 C (28 F), while a lower temperature of -5 C (23 F) will lead to very flat plate-like crystals. Further changes in temperature as the snowflake falls determines different shapes of the six arms or dendritic structure of the crystal 🇵🇸 ❄️
