Very edifying, thank you. I usually hear that angry babushkas are doing devil's work, chasing people away from the church (and the Church).
In fairness, I have heard a lot about such furies, but I don't think I ever met one in my 27 years in the church. I believe they do exist, I just have been lucky not to run into one.
Well, you might encounter one but it's your choice to get offended or treat their "nasty comments" as a piece of advice. I remember I was shushed at when I tried to light up a candle during Like the Cherubs, which you're not supposed to do. I decided, after the initial wtf reaction, to treat her chastising me as a piece of knowledge I wouldn't' ve got without her. So blessed are the babushkas who teach us, sinners.
I have the opposite reaction if everyone was overly friendly 24/7 I'd think I joined some strange cult.
The "angry babushka" is a great sledgehammer to the individualism we are steeped in where we tend to view ourselves as "god" and beyond reproach to some degrees due to post enlightenment thinking.
@@NavelOrangeGazer You know what, that is exactly what I encountered in the Antiochian parish I joined two years ago: everyone is exceedingly friendly 24/7. And yet, it's the same authentic Orthodox Christianity as the Russian parish I left.
I never encountered this kind of attitude thank God in the coptic church. Here I felt more welcome with humble friendly people than in the roman Catholic church I grew up with.
