How do they know? HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT YOU ARE FILMING BEFORE THE POWER TOOLS TURN ON?? happens to me every time. Crazy thought...if you've got a surplus of lava rock, would it make sense to smash up a bit of it for soil or even just soil additive? ASking for an idiot. Cheers Xavier, thanks for all the tips!
It was beyond belief when that happened. Literally weeks of silence and then I get outside, press record...and the drilling and cutting starts!!! I originally purchased all of that Lava rock for that very idea. I then tried to smash it and quickly discovered lava is quite hard to break up. It seemed a great idea at the time :)
The real shame is that when it hits we are often faced with impossible choices. Last year I was three weeks into repotting when it roared into Grantham like a whiote destructive wave of icicles :)
Thank you so much Donna. I am finding it really diffficult to stop myself from doing more videos right now BUT I did promise myself a proper break to recharge batteries and also improve the stuff I do upload. The website has just added further to my working demands :)
Wow - Feb & Mar are filling up fast! This calendar is an absolute wonder. Can't wait to check out your new website for more juicy info. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your knowledge. This year sounds action packed - keep your toe healthy - you're gonna need it!!
Thanks Sue. My biggest problem is too many ideas and not enough time. This is why I will aim at just 2 videos/week this year and hopefully at least 1 blog entry. There is so much still to do on that website :()
So many tips. If I spread all those tips around my 20 trees, I wouldn't be able to use them all (teehee). I have a mad rush to get my 4 repots done (ha ha) and I don't wire this time of year as things will be starting to swell soon. I do have some hacking (pruning?) to do though. This year for me is all about final designs in some cases and fine tuning in others. Roll on Spring.
Hi Roger. i lost track of your channel - so sorry. i see you have amalgamated it with other stuff...I best go have a peek with my next glass of red wine :)
I would have loved to watch this video a year ago, before repotting my young trees into small bonsai pots. 😂 Or better 6. years ago, when I didn’t water my trees, during winter… 🤦♀️ Great to have all this information nowadays, so no necessary to go on trial and error. 👍 Thanks Xavier ❤️ Great to see you well and healthy 😘 Enjoy your day! Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
Bravo! Great video. You make it all seem - well easy or at least manageable. Look forward to more videos in this vein. Have loved wandering around in the website. You are an inspiration. Thanks!
You keep me strong and motivated Susan - thank you. That website is going to keep me very busy if it is going to stay interesting and not just a repeat of youtube!
Great information and practical advice. Always an enjoyable watch. Can’t wait for the special guest to arrive .BTW, your beak pales in comparison to mine! Cheers Xav
Cheered me up a bit this morning watching your video. This is my level of bonsai. Positive and helpful as are all your videos Xavier. And the adlib humour is the added piquancy. Cheers.
Awesome video Xavier!! I have difficulties with watering. Not so much the outdoor trees, as they are frozen, but the indoor trees. Sometimes they need water twice a day. Difficult now I'm back to work! Pest management has me pulling out my hair the last couple winters! I like these videos.😊
Me. I'm the one LOL. We tried friend. We tried. I greatly appreciate all you done to help. I'll still be watching your videos. Not as much when repotting season starts for me. This year is a MAJOR year for repotting for me. Cheers and good luck in 2024 :)
We do things so different. This is my bussiest time of the year. I am doing major styling now and will start repotting in a week or two. When you do repotting I am bussy with the garden and pond, when you do major pruning, I am relaxing.🙂👍
My experience: Dawn redwood tend to need a lot of water, even in winter. I cover them in snow when ever available and regularly water during warmer periods. I also don’t mind them to have water in their trivet (?) which then occasionally freezes. So far they respond perfectly well.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat it’s been an unassailablely warm winter in Connecticut. Averaging 10 degrees above normal. It’s giving me a touch of spring fever.
another great vid Xavier! I would try an air layer on the oak, if it dies you still have the bottom. Really looking forward to your spring videos :) thanks for the reminder about soil, off to the garden center tomorrow for sure!
The good thing about oak is they push out so many buds each year that a trunk chop will generally always be a success. I just don't want to lose that top. No hurry :)
Great video Xavier, Thanks loads for the shout out and good luck with the lava rocks, sound like a good experiment. The the tree has a bigger honker 😂😂 Thanks again mate 👊👊
i love watching your Chanel, please keep sharing. and thank you for all that you have already shared, i have learned alot from you and others that have shared.
We've got different things to do in February - it's 35°c here, aiming for 38°! My European Beech is safely in the shade, hope it's okay. You're going to be flat out busy in the Spring; it will be great to see how your trees respond to chopping and repotting. Thanks for your video, best wishes.
Just printed off my repot task lists for March - scary!! I've just been watching highlights of the Sheffield Shield cricket matches. Winter here means more cricket for me to watch from Auz :)
Hi Max, I got all of mine as cheap import bonsai back in 2018 (about £20 a tree). I have then used these to grow cuttings which is where all of my much younger starter material has come from. Anything imported these days seems massively expensive. I have never found a 'nursery' stocked Trident Maple yet :(
I'd like to hear more about the Ibuki soils you're now using Xav if you find time. I sent you a message via your website but not sure if it's up and running yet.
I will just let the oak keep growing for now I think. Feed it heavily and try to get the lower branches to shoot out and develop more girth. It's an interesting and challenging project to be sure :)
If you go to the website then near the bottom of the page is a button you can push. I have already had several requests so it is definitley working. I shall await your message :)
Hi Xavier, I have a question: What do you do with bonsai, that did have swelling, if you don't have a greenhouse? Do you take them in house? On a cool spot...?
I have a lot now swelling out and truthfully I just let them go where they are sitting. Most of our Uk species are pretty resilient and this weather isn't that unusual. I think we may have a milder start to spring this year, so perhaps see an opportunity to get going earlier with repots etc.
I know what you mean. I had to think long and hard about this big investment but if I want to keep my trees and the channel going I need to invest a little bit of my pension pot. Prices are just stupid these days :(
Thakfully being able to get monthly task lists from my app has made it easier for me to plan ahead - especially with soil and pots. It is no good for creating extra time though :)
Thanks for that. You have pretty well confirmed for me that I am better to stick with my original plan. Slowly but surely thicken those branches and then have it as a very heavy display tree outside my front door :)
I'm still gonna continue to stuff seedlings in small things that resemble bonsai pots. 😂
So will I :)
I’m taking notes for my Feb bonsai care video 😂😂😂
Ps. That’s a LOT of bonsai soil!!!
I am waiting for you to mention the key task I didnt mention. It would be great for you to poke fun at me if you do have something new :)

I'm not feeling motivated righ now. Just back from swimming :(
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat that's a shame Xavier. To be fair you've lots to do. Little by little.
I lost a few trees from a late frost last year here in the USA. I can’t let it happen again. Great show Xavier!
