    My heart stops when I see Timothy Dalton in "Jane Eyre" - he is simple the best. Good looking, elegant, sexual.

    Zelah Clarke does an amazing job in this understated role, and she is *the most* accurate Jane Eyre. The novel depicts Jane as tiny, plain, and one who keeps her emotions in check. She's in service as a governess and is a quiet, modest Christian. Recent versions portray Jane as modern and very emotional but if you actually read the novel, this is not the case at all. This 1983 version is magnificent and very accurate to the novel.

    This is the sort of work TD does best. I often wonder why he isn't called up by the BBC to do more classical drama- he'd have been my choice for Darcy.

    This version was highly criticized. But it was always my favourite version. The contrast between these two actors intrigued me. The difference in height in attractiveness and status people found jarring but I found it amazing and very romantic and sexy. Why two very different people would come together kept me at the edge of my seat. I needed to know. Though I read the book and watch other versions. This version broke loose and gave us two characters that broke with every convention of the period and the social conventions of even today. I have since watche more recent versions but pale against this one. Worth watching for any Jane Eyre fan. This Jane truly captured the characters soul.

    Zelah Clarke I'm afraid is seriously overshadowed by the utter brilliance of Timothy Dalton performance in this fascinating role . A difficult one I would imagine given the complexity of the character he is portraying. Talk about sheer unadulterated talent not to mention screen presence , ........... Timothy Dalton had both , ....in spades.

      The adaptation of any classic literature is very difficult, so much of the narrative is condensed. The actress who played Jane Eyre was amazing, and as always our gender always praise the opposite.😮

    • @andrewmiller4885
      @andrewmiller4885 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@bernadettehunt9346 Its just my personal opinion. Dalton, I have found has always delivered stellar performances.
      You said something though I have never considered or even ever noticed for that matter. You state....."as always our gender always praise the opposite."
      You however are a female praising a female.
      Dalton's part was much more difficult with a great deal more dialogue than the actress who played Jane Eyre had. I also felt her emotional range seemed very limited.
      Perhaps I'm comparing her to Joan Fontain in the original movie of the 1940's who I would say displayed a greater emotional facial reading in spite of the limited lines the part of the character called for.
      As I said just my opinion, thank you for the response you gave.

    The passage in the book about Celine Varens is much longer and worth the read. Certainly no other Rochester wore the period clothing better than Dalton. And what a gorgeous voice!

    I agree with you about William Hurt.I think that his performance lacked the warmth and passion that is so essential for the part.I prefer Timothy Dalton,instead.He is my favourite Rochester.You feel as though Charlotte Bronte wrote the book with him in her mind,despite the fact that the novel was published many years before the 1983 version.I think that had she been alive she would definately approve of Daltons performance.

    My gosh... Timothy Dalton is such a BEAUTIFUL Rochester. He is definitely too sexy for this role... But I love this nonetheless because this is probably the best acting of any Rochester I have ever seen. And I agree with everyone else about his voice... I could seriously listen to him forever and ever because it has such a great quality. Okay, I'll stop gushing now.

  • @CaminoAir
    @CaminoAir 11 лет назад +5

    Hurt was seriously miscast. He may have been cast due to the need for an internationally recognised actor for the film, for financing and marketing reasons. I thought Dalton played the role with the right amount of intensity and apparent disdain, with his wounded real personality in flashes. Some people find him too intense, but that's what the role required. Playing the part in a TV series is preferable, because a film's running time is too short to develop the character as intended.

    Well, I would not call Patrick Macnee's Mr. Rochester "attractive", but perhaps intriguing and with lots of physical features that can be interpreted straight from the novel (for example when Jane does the drawing while she visits Gateshead). I would very much like to have seen him doing a Jane Eyre-adaptation based on a script more similar to JE73 or JE83 (even JE70's script would do).

  • @domramalaja
    @domramalaja 16 лет назад

    AlwaysKeanu,
    There are several adaptations (films, radio dramas, musicals etc. and even an opera) and which one(s) that are the best I suppose is depending on taste :-) and how much one cares about faithfulness to the original text.
    I recommend you to check the site "The Enthusiast's Guide to Jane Eyre Adaptations".
    My favourites are the BBC miniseries from 1973 (followed by this one from 1983) and the BBC Radio Serial from 1972.

    I know. As a man I always have a problem with the "plain looking women". They are always falling all over the "hunks". The beautiful women are not so hung up about looks, so I have more luck there. Beautiful women are usually less impressed with "hunks".
