For those of you who watch this and have not read the book: oh gosh, I implore you.... please PLEASE read the book. It's one of my all time favorites. You will LOVE it. I promise you.
I like the details in the book, like when Rochester asks Blanche to explain all the detractions Jane exhibits of her class and when he expresses displeasure at Blanche's snobbery when Jane comes to ask for a leave during a card game. But I think Jane is less lovestruck and self-effacing, which is different from the movie, and, in a way, less romantic. I also disliked that Jane wished to keep working for him as a governess and never take a penny from his purse even after marriage because I guess she's so thoroughly modem. Seriously, WTH? And Rochester seemed almost silly and ridiculous. I imagined him sort of like an unattractive middle aged burly man who drones on about things with mind numbing detail and digressions. I think the movie is actually better because Dalton is dashing and makes the love story more enjoyable, at least for me. I'd also have preferred Jane to have been a little less mousy, about Joan Fontaine level plain, but Clark's acting makes up for it completely. I suppose it depends on what the reader wants: feminism or romance. If you want the evolution of the independent female archetype through the Georgian and Victorian eras, then you want to read the novel as part of a catalog.
To me, he realized that calling Jane "little" or making fun of her height would led him into trouble and it might cause Jane to leave him permanently. He quickly changed the topic and wiggled his hand to prevent Jane from being upset. Thankfully, Jane forgives him from that small mistake because she's in love with him. It was funny scene :D
The way he said "farewell, Miss Eyre" and the look in his eyes... swoon! and i love how they both portray so well the teasing nature of Jane and Rochester's relationship, how they're both laughing at Rochester asking for the money back😍
@@marlenadm5654 it’s so adorable. And that’s 100% the nature of Jane and Rochester’s relationship, they’re constantly teasing and playing with each other. They’re soulmates.

Rochester is supposed to be brooding and sardonic (to everyone, as a mask he wears because he feels so broken) BUT he shows his true personality with Jane, which in reality he is a funny, intelligent and caring man. The joke about her waiting for her people in hay lane, this whole “on this mercenary ground, will you let me hector you a little?” are playful ways to get to know her better. To see show she responds to him and how compatible they actually are. And she gets to know him better in response. I love this series. I could talk about it and about the book for days. There are only few changes from what’s in the book and most of the dialogue is there.

Talk about a man in love. He doesn't want her to leave because she'll be gone, for what would probably feel like an eternity, and he'd be stuck with guests he wants to make her jealous with.
@Nenethegreat W I don't think he hides his feelings because she is a governess. He doesn't care about his guests' opinion. He has to pretend because his main aim is to hide his feelings from her, to make her believe he's in love with Miss Ingram.
@Nenethegreat W well then you didn't understand that Rochester was doing all these things to make Jane jealous, it was his plan, because somewhere he knew that Jane would not speak up her feelings which she has for him by herself. Even in this particular scene when he repeatedly says is that all?? So, you will do no more than say farewell Jane? He is giving her a chance to speak up, but she clearly refuses and says it is enough sir, that " enough sir " hurts him. Even in post mason conversation when he looks at Jane and says " but I have found the being jane ", he ardently looks at her like a lover, trying to say look at me, look into my eyes, can't you see Jane there is so much love in my eyes for you, only you, but again Zelah's jane is clueless about his real emotions for her, and that's why he laughs at her and himself and then brings the subject of honourable Blanche Ingram.

4:11 Can we just appreciate the effort Timothy and Zelah put into not bursting out laughing after Tim calling Zelah "little niggard"? You can see their lips keeping laughter inside.
Yup noticed that, it's like he calls her " you Little niggard", then she smiles which makes him smile and you can see that big dimple on his cheek. He is about to laugh but controls himself. But that's what makes this scene realistic as we audience also smile looking at them. This and post Mason conversation are my favourite scenes. Not only his acting is wonderful but his real gorgeousness comes out very well in this particular scene which makes me think that did the makers purposefully gave him different hairstyle for each episode to make him look ugly because in this particular clip he looks nothing like novel 's ugly Rochester.
@@cellowali2865 It was either Tim was about to flub his line or he wanted to apologize to Zelah for insulting her because of her height. Whatever happened after that, at least we see those two had fun in that scene. It's the genius of the dramatist, Alexander Baron. The line is not in the book but somehow it fits like a glove to the story. I love what he did to the script. Respecting the author whilst knowing so well how to translate the book unto the small screen. True to the story and the characters.
The pause after you little - makes me think he was about to burst out laughing and has done really well keeping it together. Amazing adaption. Thank you for having these here. I do wonder how many takes this took. I love the movie but this adaption makes me want to read the book again. Why have I only just come across this pair.
I've only just found this version. I can't believe it my favourite Bond now my favourite Rochester. I can see how colin firth's Pride and Prejudice copied a lot from it. It's brilliant.
Timothy Dalton played a version of Heathcliff in a Wuthering Heights film before this. Not a great film (too short for the material) but he is also a wonderful Heathcliff.
I find it hard to pick a "favourite" version or a favourite Rochester. Dalton is very passionate, sometimes abrupt (like book Rochester) and this version is very faithful to the book. The 2006 imo captures the dynamic of Jane and Rochester best and Toby Stephens is also fantastic, belligerent, yet charming. I also find that 2006 captured the period best, you had a real sense of the Victorian/Gothic vibe of the novel. The 2011 is way too short in my opinion (you just can't squeeze JE into a film, sorry) but even that Rochester is fascinating. Fassbender plays him more tortured/creepy which is not wrong, just another shade of the original. Idk I just love them all and still be happy to get a new version whenever they made one..
this man is crazy. to fall in love with a man in so much anger is hard. he is manipulating Jane with a temper on him all the time. i guess only the woman in love could endure so much!

Sehr subtil! Ein Meisterwerk in Micromimmik auch!
Yes, handsome for our time! But actually not the ideal looks back in 1847 Englan which would have been more like St John Rivers. More than once he mentions his broad shoulder. The perfect guy back then would have been more affemanant with a grecian profile.
I know. Ridiculous how he is described and self-describes as not handsome here. But he's not completely pretty boy handsome like Brad Pitt or Pierce Brosnan. And I prefer it this way. Makes the love story on the screen more enjoyable.
I don't quite know how British currency works, but I know a pound is a lot of money. So can we appreciate that Mr. Rochester is so rich that he can afford to carry at least 60 pounds in his pockets?!
@@Anna-ou7or -- Yes, obviously. I mentioned that to put the money Rochester first offered (and the additional cash he kept in his pocket) in perspective. Fancy that! It's true that she had food and board and probably paid no taxes whatsoever, but still... imagine living on a pound and a quarter for an entire month!
Intractable Jane. Besting Rochester in a contest of wills. Gotta love it. These 2 are much less dysfunctional than the *other* Bronte couple, Cathy & Heathcliff.
I never understood why they always carried their purses around (even if just inside the house), or in Rochester's case had a huge amount of money in his pockets; and it's not just in the movie, it was mentioned in the book as well ;-P. Nevertheless, it's one of my favourite scenes, the way they tease each other is just so cute.
In many cultures, people would wear all their gold coins around their neck. I believe it to be the case, if one would be robbed then least likely to be frisked or so back then it was unlikely.
Mr Rochester was a very unattractive man in the book. Jane saw beyond his looks and when they finally become happy, he looks better with the scowl off of his face. Jane is far from beautiful or even pretty in the book. They saw the best in one another.
I'm sorry but I don't agree: In those days, a man with dark hair and dark eyes ("a vulcan") was considered unattractive compared to a blond, blue eyed "Apollo" - it was just the taste of the times then, he was not "fashionable", I presume.. The scowl made him unattractive, maybe
Timothy dalton voice used to scare me, but it's so attractive, mysterious, Charismatic, gentle and warm + rich! James bond movie, the living daylights, this miniseries :) Brenda Starr Brooke Shields movie by the way they worked phenomenon, beautiful and sexy ;)

This was actually the first screen adaption of Jane Eyre I saw. I fell in love with Mr. Rochester. I still am in love with that character. I know it is crazy. LOL
Angela Ng You're not the only one, and I don't think you're crazy lol
I first read the book in my teens. I too was in love with Mr. Rochester. I love all the portrayals. Each actor brings something special even George C. Scott! Thank God the book had a happy ending. I would have died!! Lol
Timothy Dalton was excellent in Wuthering Heights, with Anna caldwell
@Sharon Jensen He is my favourite James Bond too. His portrayal was the closest to the character.
better than having fallen in love with heathcliff. that’s questionable lol
This is so by the book, I just finished it.. AGAIN!!! and went over every version of it here on internet. It is truly remarkable.
Awww I love that chemistry.
I'm aware many have complained that Dalton was too handsome to play as Mr. Rochester even though he has dark hair, olive complexion face and grim expression but I got used to look at him. He made an excellent performance which made that version enjoyable to watch.
The part with the money is my favorite part of the movie. I replay that scene over and over.
Perfection, just perfection 🌹
Farewell for the present...such eloquent words..🌹💐🌷💐🌹
The most elegant mr Rochester!
Good Lord is that man handsome. *Swoon*
Best version of Jane Eyre.
I love the nervosity and the kindness of Mr Rochester💋💋❤️❤️❤️
Im just pointing out that £50 is equivalent to around £7,000 today and the tenner he gave her is equivalent to around £1,200 today. He has not issue throwing money at her as he sees her as his equal and wife already.
He is gorgeous, she is cute.
"You will walk up the pyramids of Egypt!" Dalton is brilliant as Rochester
@AwesomeAnonymously I love that line!! "No, sir, you are not to be trusted" Classic.
"That...person....appears to want you."
"....*does* she?"
LOL I love that! Never caught the subtle nuances here.
It's the genius of the dramatist, Alexander Baron. The line is not in the book but somehow it fits like a glove to the story. I love what he did to the script. Respecting the author whilst knowing so well how to translate the book unto the small screen. True to the story and the characters.
@@garukoe Another nuance I caught was during the reunion scene, when Jane tells him she is now a rich woman. Rochester asks "a free woman?".

I used to fave on Joan Fontaine's Jane Eyre. But...dang...this one is heartbreakingly cute
The pause after you little - makes me think he was about to burst out laughing and has done really well keeping it together. Amazing adaption. Thank you for having these here.
I do wonder how many takes this took. I love the movie but this adaption makes me want to read the book again. Why have I only just come across this pair.
This is my favourite Jane Eyre version.
She is very beautiful ! !!!
She has a luminous quiet feminine beauty.
I've only just found this version. I can't believe it my favourite Bond now my favourite Rochester. I can see how colin firth's Pride and Prejudice copied a lot from it. It's brilliant.
He's perfect but I personally can't stand her despite all the praises. He really is a marvelous actor
A master piece!
Great scene. I love the story of Jane Eyre.
I SIMPLY LOVE TIMOTHY DALTON AS MR ROCHESTER.SUCH A CLASSIC PERFORMANCE AND YET REMAINS THE BEST OF ANY OTHER ACTOR'S WHO PLAYED THAT PART.
Timothy Dalton played a version of Heathcliff in a Wuthering Heights film before this. Not a great film (too short for the material) but he is also a wonderful Heathcliff.
He is actually much too handsome to play Rochester as he is described in the book, but still - he is so crazy good in the role! Perfect choice.
I wish people would quit saying that. People say that on every video of every movie version of this story.
I watched this when it first aired... Fell in love with Timothy Dalton. Fallen in love all over again.
I think when he was young he is not handsome ( Wuthering Heights) than he was about 40 ages. He is more and more attractive and handsome.
"Just let me look at the money" 😂😂 So cute lol
what a handsome man,,,perfect
Jane Eyre loves dominating personalities, read the novel!
Sehr subtil! Ein Meisterwerk in Micromimmik auch!
Ja, er hat sie absichtlich eifersüchtig gemacht))
Timothy Dalton was a STONE COLD FOX 😍💋
oh im in love with this man
This is the nerd section and its fucking awesome
My favorite version!! But Timothy Dalton is way too handsome!!!
The money scene is wonderfully funny,
TD in the 80s boy oh boy....
This man has the England bank on him 😂
such a masterful scene!
He looks charming & mature, that's when he could play James Bond ...
I don't quite know how British currency works, but I know a pound is a lot of money. So can we appreciate that Mr. Rochester is so rich that he can afford to carry at least 60 pounds in his pockets?!
I live in the 21st century and even I don't have that much money in my pocket lmao
£60 in 1865 would be £7,588 in today's currency.
@@Anna-ou7or -- Well, Jane's salary for the entire year was £15 and was considered quite generous!
@@ffeff8353 obviously the cost of living is much higher today and she didn't have to pay for accommodation, food etc.
"Just let me look at the money" LOL nice try!
,, hi
E
You’re not to be trusted....
He is more intimidating than Christian Grey lmao
Intractable Jane. Besting Rochester in a contest of wills. Gotta love it. These 2 are much less dysfunctional than the *other* Bronte couple, Cathy & Heathcliff.
Farewell? I adore you, Timothy Dalton. I can't not leave you! If you want me, I am here
This is the Best film, becose this is the Best Mr. Rochester
And the best Jane...
Generally, all Bonds are not to be trusted 😎... Jane is very wise indeed.
Beauty was very strange back then Jane is as pretty as any of them or better looking i think...
Dalton should have continued to portray James Bond! Pierce Brosnan was never convincing as James Bond!
Timothy Dalton Love you Mister Rochester the best ❤💚💜💗💐💞
I never understood why they always carried their purses around (even if just inside the house), or in Rochester's case had a huge amount of money in his pockets; and it's not just in the movie, it was mentioned in the book as well ;-P. Nevertheless, it's one of my favourite scenes, the way they tease each other is just so cute.
In many cultures, people would wear all their gold coins around their neck. I believe it to be the case, if one would be robbed then least likely to be frisked or so back then it was unlikely.
@@gloriahanes6490 today people walk with their mobile in hand
They are. Jane and Rochester. End.
The scowl made him unattractive, maybe
the height difference omg i am swooning
Timothy dalton voice used to scare me, but it's so attractive, mysterious, Charismatic, gentle and warm + rich!
James bond movie, the living daylights, this miniseries :)
Brenda Starr Brooke Shields movie by the way they worked phenomenon, beautiful and sexy ;)
Anna N omg, I love Brenda Starr, yes, they were excellent in it ☺️
