  • A review of my wood turning lathe that I've had in region of 20 years
    It has spent 10 years or so in a box under the bench as I've never really come to love this particular machine, however it's functional and does the basic job I usually require to be done, knobs, dowels and the odd spindle.

    Cheers for the video, i was just given the Nutool version of this lathe from around the same time. Our neighbours son had only used it a couple of times then it was left to build up rust. Going to clean it up and be realistic with what i can expect to do with it! Thanks for your video and explanation of it, saved me quite a bit of time, especially with the play there initially is in the tailstock till its locked down. Cheers 👍

    Hi, I'm sure I've read that the nut on the head stock is there to enable the drive centre to be removed, locking the head stock and unscrewing the nut will push the drive centre out, I have this lathe as a start up lathe great for learning without to much out lay, wish I had seen this as I started with a bag of bits and I had to work out how it fitted, thanks for the rundown on the lathe

    • @Phenrica
      @Phenrica  3 года назад

      Hi Stevie, yep that could work with the nut, never gave that a thought as I just used a knocker out bar 😂 Agree bout being an affordable way into woodturning as for the bag of bits I still recall many years after owning it coming across grub screws that I didn’t know where there and understanding once you knew about them how they could be adjusted to tune in the alignment. Mines now gone to a new home (my bro-in-laws) and still being used regularly,
      Cheers Steve

    I recently picked up the Draper version, same kind of age. Very, very quite. Its not bad. Good to have to start turning wood.
    A lot of fun.

    I think the nut behind the face plate is for locking against the Bach of the face plate to lock it in position

      Yeh that makes sense, though does shorten the available thread I suppose. 👍

    I too have one the same as this, at least I think it is the same as I have not seen mine for 12 years ! I had it given to me brand new, but never started it due to the shear amount of shavings these produce, I think mine is green, so maybe a different make, it is buried in the barn, so I must look it out, as you say, they are excellent for turning small objects. @Phenrica  4 года назад

      As most machines now Chris i guess they're all built in the same far eastern factory and branded by the dealer. As I said mine lived under the bench for 10 years or so, tho is functional if not a thing of beauty.
      Thanks for the watch and comment

    I want to use it as a shorter version but I don’t know how to split the cylinder . The other problem the motor won’t run and it seems that the starting capacitor has blown so today I’ve ordered a new one on line see how it goes thanks for sharing

    • @Phenrica
      @Phenrica  5 месяцев назад

      To split the cylinder, remove the small screws from the keyway (the key breaches the tube split, then undo the long bolt that goes though the rear of the tube. The challenge will be how you fix the foot at the end of the tube to now exposed mid portion. There’s a plate in there that the long bolt screws into leaving no room to attach the foot! Could saw the tube I suppose and then use shorter end bolt etc. Good Luck 👍

    Why did we get these ive had mine 15 yrs bought for 25 quid never used it as wood dust and greased parts dont mix in a garage workshop, so know just built a woodwork shop 7x10 purposely for wood stuff so when moving the lathe into its new home i dropped the sod and broke one of the cast mountings ,AHHHHH will try and stick it with a cast rod later then clean all rust off it and then lose my hearing using it lol, thanks for showing us m8.

    A question and an answer: The nut is to lock the chuck when fitting.
    did you use a standard power switch as mine has recently broken and seem to be far from standard?
    any advice would be welcome

    I have the same lathe. They where sold under a number of different names. Mine is a Canadian Tire model. I paid $120 Canadian dollars for it and it's sat unused since I bought it used two years ago. Eventually I'll get around to setting it up once I get a shop either built or we move to a new home with a one already built, but the current problem is the tail stock moves off centre to the main spindle and could be dangerous. I need to find a way of getting that tail stock to stay on the bed rail and not swing left or right of centre of the main spindle. I also wish to add a number 1 morse taper jaw chuck if I can ever find one. How does the 4 jaw chuck and the new chuck kit fit into the drive spindle. Thanks for the video.
    After watching the video again and hearing you especially say it's not a must have bit of kit I may just move this one for a more substantial style with a non round bed rail/tube. Searching online people in woodworking forums all seem to have the same opinion about this model and all recommend giving them a miss.

      Richard Short Hi Richard, definitely not the best lathe in the world, however it did do the jobs I needed it to do. As for the tailstock alignment on the Clarke there’s access to grub screw that aids alignment by adjustment against the key under the round bar. I’ve just recently replaced mine for a midi lathe with variable speed. Hope this helps. Cheers Steve

    • @richardshort4587

      Phenrica Hello Steve and thanks for the quick reply M8. I've tried adjusting that grub screw you mentioned but the alignment is still out slightly and so probably needs some further investigating to see what's wrong. Could be its worn and needs some work done to it. Hope you're enjoying the new one you got. Take care in this wacky world we find ourselves living in now. God bless brother.

    • @Phenrica
      @Phenrica  3 года назад

      Richard Short Thanks Richard, one thought has the tube itself slipped round? Again there’s a fixing screw this time at the rear of the head stock that’ll allow you to rotate the tube and therefore gives more scope on the tail stock. Just retread you’re original question and seen the Chuck query, I bought the 4” Xact Chuck package from Rutlands which had a reducing ring (1” x 8tpi in the Chuck) that allowed it to fit the lathe spindle (3/4 x 16tpi I think) I found a 1 morse taper Jacobs Chuck on eBay for about £10 old but works.

    • @richardshort4587

      Phenrica Thank you Steve again for the quick reply. It's nice to know you read you're comments section, means a lot to folk watching you're videos. I watched a few more of what you do and I have to say you have a great talent for fine workmanship. Very well done on the model vehicles. I will contact Rutlands this week to checkout delivery cost to Canada. It may not be worth it, and so will look on Amazon Canada also. I will checkout that adjustment on the bed rail under headstock for sure, it could be a quick fix hopefully. I had been thinking about the nut on the main spindle and the outboard end also. I came up these ideas. The nut maybe is meant to help release any morse taper fitting in the main spindle to be pushed off by putting pressure on any adapter whilst it's knocked out from the outboard end. And the outboard end, could you run a sanding disc of that perhaps.? If I was back in the UK in Sunderland we could have had some good phone call conversations, but now live in Canada. Take care and keep.these quality vids coming. Cheers 🍻
      Just downloaded the manual for this unit Steve. What I found was the headstock nut is to pop off taper centres and to lock face/backing plates and chucks to the spindle. The spindle lock is for indexing and yes you can outboard turn work larger than than the 12 inch inboard maximum and also add a manual turning handle/wheel. Parts availability is unknown as yet. Hope this helps any viewers out. TTFN 👍
