You and another channel, Bible Illustrated, are the reason I found orthodoxy and became so enthralled by it. I appreciate the history that you put on display that helps put into context the beliefs that we have. Thank you so much. Christos Anesti!
The imagery of Christ's speedy descent into Hades as depicted by His upward flowing garments is the original super hero landing against which all others are unworthy by comparison.
When I first started to read about Orthodoxy and came across this icon I was absolutely mesmerized by it. I'm just so grateful to know more about all that Jesus accomplished through his death, burial and resurrection. Sometimes I feel like we in Evangelicalism get the short-shrift.
This is perhaps the most thrilling Orthodox icon, the descent into Hades! It summarises the Christian Faith and it’s so moving! As we say at Great Friday’s egkòmia-mourning hymns over the epitaph: Ἐπὶ γῆς κατῆλθες, ἵνα σώσῃς Ἀδάμ καὶ ἐν γῇ μὴ εὑρηκὼς τοῦτον Δέσποτα, μέχρις ἅδου κατελήλυθας ζητῶν. Which means: You came down to Earth to save Adam but You didn’t found him on Earth… you came even far down to Hades searching for him! This icon is the original Orthodox icon, the other one that we see the last years in some Orthodox churches are more western-renaissance-ish view on resurrection. It shows Christ getting out of the tomb with a white flag with a Red Cross… First, we don’t know when exactly Christ was resurrected and we don’t what happened. Neither we do not what he opens into Hades but as most this in Orthodoxy, this icon is a symbolism of the thing that we know that took place down there! Rejoice brothers! Christ is risen from the dead!! Christos Anesti!
Welcome home! Lazarus Saturday is a beautiful day and now you'll have an extra reason to celebrate it every year! And YES to the mugs! They're available as donation-mugs through our Ko-Fi page: ko-fi.com/s/850e63b0cd
Χριστός Ανέστη! (Christ is Risen!) You did an absolutely amazing job explaining one of my favorite icons ever. Thank you for spreading our Orthodox faith to the world, and most importantly of all, for prophesying the truth that is our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ!
Great video. Thank you. It's by far my favorite icon, it gives me the impression of an explosion happening as Christ triumphantly rips through the doors of Hades. Where is the mosaic located that is depicted at 2:33? The Chai Masala recipe has been noted.
The Hebrew word sheol means grave. The idea is that Christ descends into the grave to ressurect all of the Old Testament prophets who foretold of his coming. In this way, Christ defeats death. Hades was a Greek word meaning an underworld of shades, often referred to in Greek mythology (Charon, the river styx, etc.). The word Jesus uses is gehenna, an Aramaic word meaning a perpetually burning rubbish dump outside of the gates of Jerusalem where paupers’ and animal corpes were thrown. The English word hell comes from the Norse word hel, a place of torment you consigned enemies to in Norse mythology. Interestingly, the Greek word tartarus, also used in the New Testament, has this meaning in Greek mythology.

Original super hero landing! Well put!
I love learning the Iconoragphy language. It is beautiful and makes the faith so much deeper.
There is a documentary coming out soon called icon by odd brothers production. There is a trailer on RUclips !

Thankyou. Without the Harrow, Easter doesn't make sense. Without it Easter as the new Passover feels very forced and contrived.
He is risen indeed!!!
