Also, if you're non-Orthodox and you want to check out Orthodox Easter this year, remember it won't be at a normal time, it will start around 11pm or so on Saturday night!
Isn’t it more beautiful that around the world Christ’s resurrection isn’t a ‘one and done’ date? I am glad to know this- it perfectly showcases how we will continually mis the mark of pinning down God’s timing! It’s quite silly that we think we have to agree. I converted in Dec.2021 but my husband remains Roman Catholic. So I get to repeat celebrating piercing the veil of time for Christos Anesti! ❤❤❤
How interesting! Most Romanian Protestants I’ve met wanted nothing to do with the Orthodox…These Romanians I’ve met live here in the USA. I do know some Eastern European Protestants here who don’t seem to have much against us…so of course it’s not everyone who feels that way.
To keep things straight between Ortho Pascha/Easter and our Protestant family's celebration of Easter, we call theirs 'Weaster' (pronouced wee-ster). Makes things much easier in conversation with our kids :)
I am glad you mentioned Finland & Estonia, though it appears much of those parishes in Estonia have adopted the hybrid calendar now...there are also 2 Russian (Moscow Patriarchate) monasteries in Belgium that are on the Gregorian Calendar, as well as some parishes in the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands & Slovakia (so I've been told) Although not in communion with us Eastern Orthodox, I think it's also significant that most of the Armenian and Malankara (Indian) jurisdictions of the Oriental Orthodox communion follow the Gregorian Paschalion, as they are more global. The Syriac Archdiocese of Guatemala is also on the Gregorian Calendar, since they are basically all former Roman Catholics
“Hybrid”, you mean the New Julian? It calculates everything BUT Pascha similar to Gregorian but Pascha is still on old Julian rules, as I understand it.
Another great video on the date of the feast of feasts!! May God bless you as you prepare to celebrate Palm Sunday and Holy Week and next week the glorious Feast of Pascha!! Christ is Risen!! Indeed He is Risen!! Christos Anesti!! Alithos Anesti!!
The move to the Gregorian calendar was also messy in the Protestant world. Different Protestant countries who hadn't got around to updating their calendars by the time they fell out with Rome were not keen to toe the line of the Pope they had just broken with.
England resisted the Calendar Change for 500 years. Only when it became politically Messy to be 11-12 days late to weddings, peace accords and othersuch they moved to the Georgian Calendar.
@@acekoala457 “500”? That Pope Gregory made the change in 1582. Protestants generally resisted for over 100 years or so, then gradually on a country by country basis adopted it between 1690-1770, but for almost purely secular reasons, begrudgingly admitting it’s scientific superiority.
What was behind pope Gregory intention to re-calculate the date? and one catholic can ask an Orthodox person: "since the Gregorian calculation is more advanced and accurate, why not accept it?" Also is it really advanced and accurate? who can prove it and if it is accurate how come the Eastern church still does not want to follow it? Who was behind this new Gregorian calculation and why in the 16th century? Thanks.
You didn’t mention that there’s also the issue of who has the rightful authority to lawfully change the calendar, except maybe a vague allusion to it in Nicea. It was at that Council that it was determined for all time that only a Valid Emperor could lawfully initiate a major change to the calendar. While the inaccuracies had already been noticed by 1400, the last two generations of the Byzantine Emperors never made the issue a priority, having much more pressing issues to deal with, & then we suddenly had no emperors, so nobody can do it… …or COULD they? By the 1880s, a debate had begun that the Czar’s line were also the valid heirs to Byzantium so had the authority to authorize a change. By 1910, most bishops were in agreement on this matter & Saint Czar Nicholas even agreed to eventually formally authorize it, but needed time to research the ritual, but then WW1 ended that proper process forever. Then, in 1923, the Greek government began to nag the bishops to consider the Late Czar’s promise as a “de facto” authorization under extenuating circumstances. This led to a FIERCE debate among the bishops that even led some into what is now called by many as the radical Old Calendarist Schism (they call themselves “True Orthodox”). The rest of us embraced a compromise position, some can fully use the Old Calendar, some the hybrid New Julian, while a timely few others like Finland are going by Gregorian.
Thanks for the invite and for thinking of us! For now we'll hold off, just as we don't have much time ahead of Pascha. But do get in touch and drop us an email about what you're up to in the world of creative content!
Yes it should be! We had an order just yesterday and it worked fine. Not sure if your issue is something with KoFi or PayPal but on our end everything works and we haven't had any problems
Good video, just it´s a bit annoying to hear a bit of arrogance in the phrase "everyone else has a different date for easter" just after you said the ancient practice was to wait for the astronomical exact date calculated by Alexandria, and then an easier way and modern in that time was the calculation orthodox still use today. In that sense, western Christians would be using the ancient method of calculation which is based on exact astronomical observation. Western Christians, no matter whether catholic, protestant, old catholic, etc. celebrate on the astronomical most accurate date even when we still have differences in many other practices.
It was not meant in arrogance, sorry it came across that way. It's meant to point out that while everyone sees us as being different, really we're the ones without the updated calculation. And the Orthodox world has only really interacted with the updated calendar since the beginning of the 20th century. We have another video on our channel about the Easter Calculation. Christ is risen!
@@Patristix I understand that sometimes when we try to defend ourselves from accusations we may fall into sounding different in meaning than what we really meant. I understand your point, and of course the people who attack the orthodox date should know that it is the previous date that the top two used, which of course we believe should be updated to be accurate, but the orthodox position is still valid. Thank you for clarifying your point, and I understand that your words could have been misinterpreted as arrogance but in reality it was not. God bless you, even though I am not orthodox I really appreciate your videos to learn more about Greek Orthodoxy.
I and many other Orthodox *do* care about the accuracy of the astronomical events, because God has given us reason and the ability to understand the cosmos. It's only laziness, ineptitude, politics, or pride (or a combination of the four) that keeps us from updating our calendar to match the reality of creation. I believe it's time we adopt the Aleppo proposal for dating Easter (which keeps the Ecumenical Council's rules, but uses the very measurable astronomical equinox and full moon, and uses the meridian over Jerusalem as reference point).
I will answer you on this brother and I do not mean any disrespect. But do you know why tge eastern europe kept the same religion for 2000 years while the west can't go for a year without making up another kind of christianity? For us in the eastern Europe, there is no "me", there is no personal opinion, there is no questioning the church fathers. There is only obedience, only listening, and humility. There is no personal interpretation of anything. There is no accusing the church fathers of laziness or other things. The whole premise is that I am the worst sinner of all and my own judgement is fallen as a result. So we are left with only listening to our church fathers. I do not wish to send this text as an offence but I am afraid that the new wave of western converts are going to bring this "me" mentality into orthodoxy.

We need another Ecumenical Council to resolve these issues...
But why was the full moon important?
Because that’s how you tell what time of the month it is
Because Nicea said so.

RCC: first Sunday, after the first Full Moon, after the First Day of Spring.
