So here I am in Philadelphia, wishing I was across the Pond in that
wonderful shop discussing coins with you. Books, books books!!
I have been an Antiques dealer for about 55 years and at 70 years
old have built up quite the Library on Antiques. Can not learn without
books. There is where the real research is. Thanks for this, it has brightened
    my evening.

    as a young kid
    keen on coins
    back in the sixties
    on holiday in
    conway as it was
    known back then
    i came across a
    1937 edward V111
    threepenny bit
    for sale in a little
    antique shop...it
    was six shillings
    and six pence...
    i implored my
    father to buy it for
    me because
    they're very rare
    and valuable...
    even back then...
    but he refused to
    pay that much for
    an old threepenny
    piece despite my
    tears...it was the
    one that got away
    big-style...later
    realising his
    mistake he joined
    me in collecting
    coins but sadly the
    horse had bolted...
    i used to offer kids
    at school
    fourpence for a
    threepence or one
    and a penny for
    a shilling if they
    could find me rare
    dates or variations
    in their small
    change...those
    were the days long
    gone but not
    forgotten...can't
    wait for you to
    tackle old
    postcards david...
    that's been my
    special interest for
    the last forty
    years or so.

I find that hard to believe. There were none released into circulation and so the circumstances of one ending up in a shop are very unbelievable. Most though KE8 didn’t even have any coins made until the 70’s when a box of his coins were unearthed from the royal mint archives:

      that's to the best
      of whatever source's
      knowledge you
      quote from...it's not
      definitive in terms
      of possibility...i know
      what i saw and
      had in my hand...
back then i was a coin
      collector and
      i was certainly able
      to tell the difference
      between the
      two busts of the
      different kings...
      i was a grammar
      school kid
      not a dummy from
      a compy...
      finding this darned
      coin back then
      has haunted me over
      all these ensuing
      years...
      it's been like
      a numismatic
      albatross around my
      neck...missing
      out on something
      big in life is always
      a real downer...
      if i got to know
      beyond a doubt that
      it was a
      fake of some sort
      or that back in 1966
      i'd momentarily
      entered
      the twilight zone...
      or whatever else...
      believe me
      nobody would be
      happier about it than
      me...i'd be overjoyed.

A great video, thank you for posting! I have recently inherited a huge unsorted stamp collection, which came also came with an unexpected coin collection. They were passed on to me because my father has had them untouched in the attic for the best part of 40 years. He finally accepted that he was never going to spend the time to go through the literal sacks of coins and stamps that were just waiting to be sorted and put in the right album/given away/sold. The collections had been started by my great great grandfather and though it had been passed down through four or five others before coming to me, none of them have touched any of it, except to add some more coins to the bags here and there. I haven't a clue what I'm doing and though I'm really enjoying learning, it is a mammoth task. I would be very interested on your thoughts about the APPs that identify your coin for you and even tell you what it's worth. Are they really that accurate? I've been using one to start me off, so I at least know what I'm looking at and so far it seems pretty spot on. But I can't help feeling that they surely can't have captured every tiny detail and quirk that goes into making a coin rare or valuable... Then I remember that we have self driving cars now and it suddenly doesn't seem like such a stretch. Now I just have to find an APP that does the same thing for stamps because there's an awful lot more of them than there are coins. God help me, this is going to take years...

When it became apparent that we were going decimal, in the late 1960s my grandfather collected an old penny from every year he could for me. These included one from 1860 - the first year that sort of penny was minted. It was worn thin but Victoria's head and the date were still easily discernible. It is amazing to think that it was in continuous circulation for nearly 100 years and that, even though worn as flat as a washer, it was still universally accepted without question.

I was an Church alter boy in the early 1960's and one of the Clergy and I would go through the Sunday collection himself looking out for any silver and myself swapping any Vic or Edward pennies for Queen Eliz ones. I must have handled thousands of pennies, I sold some to a coin stall in Woolwich market to buy others to make year runs. We knew nothing about die marks or 5 over 3 or dot pennies, if only I knew, but I had and still have fun collecting.

I have collected coins now for over fifty years, and have enjoyed the hobby. But I would like to tell people, please do not under any circumstances clean coins, please leave exactly as they are. So many people ruin coins by cleaning rubbing them whipping and polishing them. Doing any of this, ruins all their value and collectors will never want them. Just leave them as they are, so please don't do this. Many wonderful coins have been ruined by people cleaning them.

Its oddly coincidental, I paid £17,000 for 20 x 1oz gold britannias in 2016, at current rates the scrap value of those 20 x 1oz coins is a little over £36,000.
Why would anyone speculate on a seriously overpriced worn penny?

      Very different market obviously

@@DavidHarperAntiques I still don't understand the logic, assuming one thinks of their currency as real money (which it isn't) why would anyone speculate on an item that has no intrinsic value. It's not like as though it's a 400 Yr old masterpiece. Philately has me baffled too.
I have over 30 Victorian shield back (gold) Sovereigns which have cost me much the same as that single penny. Having expressed my confusion, where preserving ones wealth is concerned, bitcoin is yet another confounding conundrum; I would have switched out of it into something more tangible at it's previous high to less fashionable commodities of intrinsic value.
I could go on regarding metal detecting....... I'm happy to watch them from the comfort of my armchair, but they'll never accumulate as much than if they purchased from a local coin shop.

@@DavidHarperAntiquesI come back, to you after some months, and still cannot see the logic in spending all that fiat currency on a copper disk, that used to buy a pint of beer.
Even today that £17,000 that once bought me 20oz of gold could still get me 9oz of gold. If you had 9oz of gold in your hand, I dont think you would see that victorian penny in the same light.
I've come to the conclusion that perceived value is not in the item itself, but how much fiat currency you have accumulated after having sold it on.
I could go on regarding hyperinflation when bartering replaces currency........ what value a copper penny then?

Unfortunately coin collecting is going same way as stamps, the modern coin has become a cash cow for the royal mint ,would also warn Chinese imitation coins are now as good as original have a fantastic copy 1933 penny from Ebay,,only deal with a reputable seller or dealers
