  • Tennis Return of Serve Lesson - How To Deal With Kick Serves.
    The kick serve is the most commonly used second serve for tennis players around the world. A good kick serve will bounce up quite high and move away from the returner, often ending up inside the doubles alley on the advantage side. It will also clear the net by some distance and then dip in before it reaches the lines, making it very consistent, a perfect option for the second serve.
    Many club players struggle to return kick serves and in this video we want to help you deal with them using four different methods.
    How To Deal With Kick Serves In tennis:
    Method One - The easiest way to deal with a kick serve is to move back and let the ball drop. By stepping back a few feet, you're buying yourself time and allowing the ball to drop down to a more comfortable strike zone. This option is the most defensive one because you end up far out of the court, so in order for this method to be effective, it's important you hit the return quite high with aggressive topspin and aim crosscourt which will give you time to recover into a good position on the court and make attacking the shot hard for your opponent.
    Method Two - Taking the ball on the rise. This option is much harder to execute but the rewards can be great. By taking the ball early, you're taking time away from yourself so you'll have to shorten your swing and be very alert to make a clean contact. The major upside is that you're hitting the ball before it gets too high in your strike zone but you're also taking time away from your opponent. With this method, you can aim the return right at the server's feet which will catch them off guard and maybe force an error or easy response.
    Method Three - Hitting an inside in or inside out forehand return. This option is most effective on slower courts such as clay courts or slow hard courts. You'll need time to execute this option and you'll have to be quick at getting around the ball and creating space. Remember, with a kick serve, the ball will be moving to the left (if the server is right-handed) so it's important to create more space so that even when the ball curves to the left, you're still in a good position to execute a good shot.
    Method Four - Slice the return. You can use this option when moving back or when stepping in and moving forward. The key here is to make sure you get the racket head above the contact point so that you can cut down on the ball.

      Thank you for watching 👍
      We tend to film early in the mornings, before people start playing on the grass. Most mornings the grass courts are covered in dew, and dry up by 9-10am
      If we start filming at 6:30am and finish by 10am, we maybe have filmed 3-4 lessons already in that time.

    I would like to see a video on the flow of movement. A lot of times I find myself in a situation when I hit high topspin deep ball and have plenty of time to recover, or I have plenty of time to hit the ball, cause it's slow, high etc. It's that kind of balls that I usually mishit, cause I dont have a flow.

    I love this video! Exactly what I needed. Any additional thoughts with respect to doubles play? I generally play the ad side and when facing both a well-hit kick serve and an aggressive net player often it feels like I have to lob over the net player just to start the point neutrally---and keeping the ball inbounds is a challenge.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 года назад +1

      its a very tough return to hit from above shoulder going across body and trying to keep the ball low and away from the net player. You have to try and step in early so that the ball does not get too high and dont be afraid to go down the line sometimes to keep the net player honest

      Thank you. Personally I struggle with switching between flat and top spin forehands during the game. High short balls I shouldn’t be top spinning as much as I do. Not sure how make the switch easier and more consistent. Cheers

    heyy simon! maybe its worth trying! it helps me alot! if i step back i like to get back and then use the left to right footwork pattern to use my body more.why i do this? if i stay on my left leg i hit a lot of mishits and because im farther back its hard to get the ball deep back. what i wanna say is that i think its important to always (when its possible) go foreward because you got more benefits of it !

    how would i know if im playing on slow hard court? Always wondered

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 года назад +2

      The ball tends to sit up more and slows down off the bounce.
      It's much harder to hit winners and rallies last longer.
      Pretty easy to tell once you've played on many different courts

  • @transklutz
    @transklutz 4 года назад +1

    And stop looking at the ball after you hit it. Remember, this is tennis, so the ball is coming back, so get ready for the next shot, it comes sooner than you think.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 года назад +2

      I'll have to disagree with that.
      You should always be tracking the ball and in doing so, you'll also see the opponent setting up for the shot.
      This can help you read their play.
      Why would you want to take your eyes off the ball when it's in play? The ball is what is giving you all the information you need to get ready quickly for the next ball

    • @transklutz
      @transklutz 4 года назад

      @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Well, admiring one's shot prevents one from getting ready for the next ball coming back. It is better to watch you're opponent's motion as you're getting ready for the next incoming delivery. It will only come from where your opponent hits, and their motion will allow you to anticipate the direction, timing, and manner of the next incoming ball. Not necessarily related specifically to kick serve returns, but generally across the board.

    • @TopTennisTrainingOfficial
      @TopTennisTrainingOfficial  4 года назад +1

      For sure we shouldn't admire our shot, however, you can still track the ball and move into a good position. The pros do it. Tracking the ball should always be your goal, the ball gives you the info you need! The player can screw you up by faking their movement!
