I was taught to understand it this way: It is specific about right and left cheeks because of the very honor culture you mentioned. To be struck on the right cheek means that the person has struck you with the back of their hand, presumably being right handed, as a slap with the off hand would be weak and awkward, defeating the purpose of the strike. This is a strike from a place of authority. By turning your left cheek to them, you force the other person to either strike you with an open palm slap, which indicates that the uh... slapper? is equal to or lesser than the slappee, or to give an embarrassingly weak and awkward left handed backhand. It is either this or they walk away. In this way you are displaying humility and accepting persecution while also teaching and fighting the good fight with peaceful means.
As for carrying someone's bag the extra mile, allegedly this is from a Roman law that dictated that a soldier could press a subject of Rome to carry his pack for one mile and no more. By refusing to put down the soldier's pack, the person puts the soldier in sever danger of getting in trouble with his centurion for breaking the law and for being lazy. The latter part would have been extremely terrifying for a Roman soldier, as something like falling asleep at your post could result in the death penalty. The mental image of a smiling Christian wordlessly walking with a Roman's pack while he's freaking out and telling them to stop is hilarious to me.
Basically this whole section is Jesus teaching his people that you don't even have to be violent to fight back against your enemies. Just be so relentlessly frustrating with your meekness and kindness that oppressing you is more trouble than it's worth.

I was also taught this in church, but reading your comment helped me to remember some of the specifics of how Jesus teaching was so genius for the people of that culture, and in turn the relevance it holds today.
Thank you for taking the time to articulate that interpretation for us.
      God Bless you!

I have read this as well but it seems that we are stretching the verse to fit our desired message. Based on the pattern that is set with Jesus' teachings in other parts, His words never required that much of a stretch to be interpreted. What if someone was left handed and struck them with an open palm in the first strike? Should we turn the other cheek or not in that situation? I mostly agree that Jesus is teaching us to not worry about being dishonored in the eyes of men and instead, play that to your advantage by praying for them so that you become the children of the Father.
The interpretation of forcing them to treat you like an equal would be the concept of eye for an eye, the concept of Justice which here, Jesus is trying to show us something past that.
So to sum it up, I believe the interpretation of the whole open and back hand slap is a stretch and is limiting the message of God to our humanly desires.

There is no way we can do what Jesus asks... unless...we are willing to let Him do through us what we could not do with our selves... in other words we have to believe He is our God who created, loves and has redeemed us OUT OF THIS WORLD. All Glory to you Jesus...

@@THE-WAY_THE-TRUTH_THE-LIFE. John 1:1 says that the Word was God. v. 14 says that the Word, who is God, became flesh, who we know as Jesus. In John 10:28, Thomas calls Jesus his Lord and his God. John 5:18 implies not that Jesus is above the Father, but that He is equal to the Father.

I don’t believe Jesus was god. I do believe he existed, and I believe he is deserving of incredible respect. He was an immensely powerful force of good for people, and I believe that, no matter what his true nature may be, the world is far better for him having lived and taught.

This gets a lot of people confused. It's a contradiction but is evidence at the same time. Jesus is GOD!!!! Jesus is a part of the God head or Holy Trinity. God the Father, God the sun, and God the Holy Ghost. Look at it this way. Our physical heart and brain has specific jobs to do. They work separately but together so our physical bodies can operate correctly. They are their own entity, but are equal because of what they allow the body to do. The Father is in heaven, the Sun was Jesus who walked the earth, the holy spirit is the part of you that is unseen. Like your soul. I hope this helps.

Allow me, because you'll never understand the Bible through a religious belief....
This is a bit long, but if you should need help to grasp it, I am here for you......
Christ is NOT Jesus, and you don't come to Christ! Christ is your Consciousness, which is God Consciousness, which is Spirit! Your True and Only State of Being!!
You are not what you appear to be! You are not a physical being living a material existence!
The Bible is the Story of Your Return to the Father's House, also known as God Consciousness, and can not be understood through human intellect.
The Material World is not of God, and God knows nothing of the material world.
Form/Matter/Physicality/Time/Space is the symptom of this False Sense of Self, or of the Denial of Immortality/Infinity/Reality/Truth/Consciousness/God as Self.....
Denying our Immortal TRUTH of Being presents us with an Infinite Number of Finite Material Illusions leading us back to Infinity/Oneness/Truth/GodSelf, including good/evil....night/day.....male/female......black/white.....god/satan.....birth/death.....etc!
God Is YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS, and the ACTIVITY(or lack of) OF THIS TRUTH IN YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS dictates the life you live in this illusory sense of being we call the material world.
The Bible, and other ancient manuscripts such as the Quran were not written for those that interpret them as religious or historical manuscripts. These beautiful manuscripts were written for the Mystical Student for the Development of Spiritual Discernment, otherwise known as COMING TO TRUTH OF BEING AS INFINITE, INCORPOREAL, OMNIPRESENCE, or SPIRIT/GOD!
They weren't written for those living in ignorance(belief in matter/form as reality, with God as a separate being).
Illumined Consciousness such as that which appeared as the Consciousness of Jesus, Buddha and Krishna OUTLINED THE PRINCIPLE OF ONE LIFE BEING INCORPOREAL AND INFINITE, yet very, very few ever grasp this message. From Krishna to Buddha to Jesus to Moses to Mohammed to Shankara, this REVELATION has never deviated(only the human intellects misinterpretation has). It was always this truth, that I AND THE FATHER ARE ONE(that my Consciousness is God Consciousness)!
Every time this Principle has been revealed through these revelators, their physical form has been worshipped through the same faculty responsible for the illusion of matter(the world mind, which Jesus called Satan). The Revealer(s) themselves never did this, because any being whose Consciousness has Unfolded to an Illumined State would never personalize it as the human intellect has/does!!
They knew I....(Consciousness)....in the Midst of You/Me IS GOD!! They knew the Material world to be an illusion playing out as reality through a False Sense of Self!! They knew mortality to be an illusion based upon a belief in a life separate and apart from Infinite, Incorporeal, Omnipresent Consciousness, or GOD!
The Material World, including that of the Human intellect, is the very belief in a life separate from God. Jesus said, "Resist Not Evil" because he knew that Evil is just another illusory sense that stems from that belief in a life separate and apart from God. Therefore, why resist what isn't a reality?? Instead, IMPERSONALIZE IT, as well as the Impersonalization of good.
"Why callest thou me good?" -Jesus
God, which is Infinite Invisible Spirit knows nothing of the material world playing out in our Consciousness. Why would God, who is Infinite, know anything of a finite world with finite beings, where birth, death, and suffering are believed to be reality?? Where wars, hatreds and bigotries are the norm?? Infinite doesn't mean just mean Eternal, NO BEGINNING, NO END, it also means Perfection(Without Error/Evil)! Therefore, what you perceive to be birth and death, good and evil is an illusory appearance of duality created by the belief in the separation from Truth/God as the Activity of Your Own Individual Consciousness.
The power of God/Consciousness is always present and functioning, and the Power of God/Consciousness is the Demonstration of your being if you allow it to be.
This power never overcomes because perfection is in constant renewal, and never fights because there's nothing to fight, and is nothing less than the Power of Being without Interruption, without an enemy to destroy or an error to be corrected! Where God Power is Recognized, Perfection Follows. Where God Power is Acknowledged, nothing else exists!! God is Infinite Renewal, Always Fresh, Always Now! SPIRIT is the Only Presence, but your disbelief in it being your true self is what you witness through what you accept as your senses.
Belief in mortality(matter/form) keeps bringing us into contact with the things our intellect fails to understand as Illusory(Life, Death, Good, Evil, etc...) until suddenly Truth/God/Spirit unfolds from your Consciousness and you begin to see the reality of Spirit and the Unreality of Matter!
Religion is unconscious of the nature and presence of God, while it believes it worships God. But it can not demonstrate God, it can not bring God into experience, and the proof is that it's followers are always praying/seeking God's help to do something, to gain something, to make something better because they refuse to see the Perfect Kingdom of God right here, right now! Spirit is perfection and needs no help in becoming better, and this too is the Denial of Spirit as True Being!
Religion and Science can not give us God because neither has found God, and can not find God! Neither has risen out of the trap of the belief in Daulity/Physicality/Mortality!! Through the belief in these things we are denying our own truth of being, thereby denying God as the Demonstration of our Experience.
The word Harlot, when spoken of in the bible speaks of a belief in Mortality as being unfaithful to God(not a whore).....
We must be reborn out of mortal belief, and into the truth of Immortality as being! God did not create the material man or anything in the world of physicality. If it isn't Infinite God did not create it. God is Infinite Perfection and can Not make mistakes. God doesnt create disaster, illness, lack, or anything else of the human intellects ignorance. Therefore, it is an illusion, and only the False Sense of You is experiencing it!
So many people that accept religious ideology as truth will not like hearing this, but the Anti-Christ is the person/mind/intellect that believes there's good and evil where only the Omnipresence of God is. The mind that believes mortality to be truth where only Immortality exists. The mind that believes form is his experience where only the Invisible resides!
Through the Activity of Truth in the Consciousness of Mystics such as Jesus and Buddha, it was revealed that the ONLY TRAITOR in our midst is the illusory human nature that believes in two powers(good/evil....birth/death.....now/then......god/satan......suffering/happiness......malw/female). So we must learn to die every day to our reliance on the human mind, and listen in the one and only place where you may hear the Divine.....In Silence!(Meditation on the One and Only Power...Omnipresent, Incorporeal, Infinite Spirit, or God....or I)
The word of the father is in the kingdom of God(Spirit), not in the illusory realm of Matter/Materialism. This means it isn't in a book or in a church, on a mountaintop or in a cave.....it is where you are because it is what you are!
There's no greater horror than to leave one's mind to the dualistic, carnal nature of this illusory world when Perfect Immortality is Your True Being!!

See Ramsey Dewey, former MMA fighter, in his YT channel - "turn the other cheek" explained very well. One night in 2010 I was performing on Hollywood Boulevard and a couple of Christian dudes in their early 20s approached and listened until I took a break and we talked. One of them thought I looked a bit rough and he literally gave me the shirt off of his back when I complimented him on it. He was undressed from the waist up. You can't say "no, thanks" to a gift like that.

You must spiritually discern the words of the Bible, as none of it can be understood through human intellect!
Turn the other cheek has nothing to do with physical action. It is spiritually telling you that after imparting truth to others, you don't attempt to argue about it with others because it can not be rationalized or debated, so if someone begins to argue with you over what you’ve imparted to them, turn and walk away, leaving them to their ignorance!

    • @DiceDecides

this can equally be applied to physical action, it's a spiritual truth itself to not react and hurt your "enemy" or the one that slaps you, you love them so much you would let them hurt you bad without resisting...

  • @shanecreamer6889

    It gets even more intense.
The target of the strike is the right cheek. Jesus’ words were δεξιὰν σιαγόνα or dexion (meaning the right-hand side) siagóna (meaning the jawbone or cheek). Jesus describes it as follows: when someone rhapizei your dexion siagóna - strikes or hits your right side’s jawbone or cheek.
Why is this important? Remember, Jesus lived in first century Palestine. Toilet paper wasn’t used until the sixth century in China, and it wasn’t commercially patented in America until 1857. During ancient times in the Middle East, people used their left hand for defication purposes.
The Jewish crowds who were listening to Jesus preach would have considered their left hand to be have literal fecal material remnants despite their best attempts to use dirt & water. You are not permitted to eat with your left hand in Ancient middle eastern cultures for this very reason.
You are literally rubbing $%!t on their cheeks as the left hand strikes the right cheek, and this was considered in Roman and Middle Eastern cultures to be a grevious insult to their person and their honor.
So Jesus is saying 'if you really want to pour hot coals on someone's conscious, allow them to insult you with a public hit with their left (fecal) hand on your right cheek, then offer them your other cheek to really blow their minds about what True Life-Changing Love can do for them. If you can love them with a quiet dignity through this ordeal you will absolutely stand out as someone who must have the Power of God to resist such an insult.
    That's Radical - That's Jesus..

  • @sheldonberg125
    @sheldonberg125 7 месяцев назад

How is it that Jesus meant something different then “turn the other cheek?”
People are taking hard teachings and complicating them because they don’t like them. Just because Jesus said turn the other cheek to his contemporary Hebrew countrymen does that mean there is some mysterious esoteric meaning behind his words. Jesus also said that we are to take up our cross and follow him. We are supposed to make sacrifices, even to the point of death. We are not supposed to seek our own destruction but Christ is telling us that we can let people abuse us, slap us, even crucify us because he holds the keys to death and to life and that we can trust Him to save us and to bring us through to something beyond the cruelty of this unjust world.
I don’t like the idea of turning the other cheek any,ore than the next person, probably even less. That doesn’t mean we should be deluding the teaching or trying to change it to suit our feelings. Accept it and then pray that God will give us the strength and wisdom to obey.

It is somewhat difficult to understand a first century honor code, when we have so much in today's terms--but, we can understand this: even today: when people finally "make it"--they earn or are given their 'fair share'--they tend to pat themselves on the back and look back at others and raise themselves up and say--'wow, I must have made so much money because I am so worthy--I am so good"...they don't look back and say, "I got lucky--I should take all of this and give it to others"--they think that there must be a causal connection between their own goodness and now they are being rewarded--and somehow, they 'deserve' this reward (that would be the Pharisees)...we are all guilty of it...we need to seriously rethink why a person of today makes $10k vs $100k? it is not about that person's moralilty...it just is not... (that is a flawed thinking outcome)..dts/usa

18 Then another message came to me from the Lord: 2 “Why do you quote this proverb concerning the land of Israel: ‘The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste’? 3 As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, you will not quote this proverb anymore in Israel. 4 For all people are mine to judge-both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins is the one who will die.
5 “Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right. 6 He does not feast in the mountains before Israel’s idols[a] or worship them. He does not commit adultery or have intercourse with a woman during her menstrual period. 7 He is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given as security by poor debtors. He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy. 8 He grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others, 9 and faithfully obeys my decrees and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign Lord.
10 “But suppose that man has a son who grows up to be a robber or murderer and refuses to do what is right. 11 And that son does all the evil things his father would never do-he worships idols on the mountains, commits adultery, 12 oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem their security, worships idols, commits detestable sins, 13 and lends money at excessive interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.
14 “But suppose that sinful son, in turn, has a son who sees his father’s wickedness and decides against that kind of life. 15 This son refuses to worship idols on the mountains and does not commit adultery. 16 He does not exploit the poor, but instead is fair to debtors and does not rob them. He gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy. 17 He helps the poor,[b] does not lend money at interest, and obeys all my regulations and decrees. Such a person will not die because of his father’s sins; he will surely live. 18 But the father will die for his many sins-for being cruel, robbing people, and doing what was clearly wrong among his people.
19 “‘What?’ you ask. ‘Doesn’t the child pay for the parent’s sins?’ No! For if the child does what is just and right and keeps my decrees, that child will surely live. 20 The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness. 21 But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die. 22 All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done.
23 “Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign Lord. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live. 24 However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live? No, of course not! All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.
25 “Yet you say, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ Listen to me, O people of Israel. Am I the one not doing what’s right, or is it you? 26 When righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things, they will die for it. Yes, they will die because of their sinful deeds. 27 And if wicked people turn from their wickedness, obey the law, and do what is just and right, they will save their lives. 28 They will live because they thought it over and decided to turn from their sins. Such people will not die. 29 And yet the people of Israel keep saying, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’ O people of Israel, it is you who are not doing what’s right, not I.
30 “Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to your actions, says the Sovereign Lord. Repent, and turn from your sins. Don’t let them destroy you! 31 Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? 32 I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live!Trust no friend,Rely on no intimate;Be guarded in speechWith her who lies in your bosom.

Check out Church Militant, ex CEO Michael Voris (step down/out due to living in sexual sin according to his ex coworkers), his explanation of turn the other cheek during Jesus's time. The master slapping the slave a 2 nd time would elevate the slave to the masters level. This wouldn't turn out good for the master. I just sharing what I remember.

Jesus said it at The Sermon of the Mount before the rejection of The Kingdom of Heaven
Most Christians never pay attention to Luke 22:35-36 where The LORD Jesus tells his disciples to sell their garments and buy a sword if they didn’t have one. He said this after the Jews rejected The Kingdom of Heaven when they attributed Jesus’s miracles to Beelzebub which made The LORD to start speaking in parables so only his disciples will understand and not those who rejected The Kingdom of Heaven
The Kingdom of GOD and The Kingdom of Heaven are two different things. If you don’t understand that, you will not understand what the LORD Jesus means by turning the other cheek

I dislike very much when people try to explain what Jesus 'really' meant when he said things. Become like a child and read the words in their simplest form. Just accept it for what it says. Stop trying to deep dive into every little word. It's like you all got bored with the basic message Jesus brought and you want to try to give some deep revelation over things that require none.
If your enemy hits you, turn the other cheek and let him hit you again. It's a simple message. Don't fight back. Which goes to saying to not seek an eye for an eye, which meant seeking redemption. So you're wrong it wasn't just money. Sigh. Please guys keep it simple. A child can read and understand the bible. Don't over complicate it.

So glad to know that so little of the bible is what it sounds like. So when it is written that a man shall not lay with another man there may be some context here, some cultural norm, some language that the Jews would have understood that is lost to us today.

Turn the other cheek ??? This is to demonstrate that you are invincible.
Not even DEATH can harm you. This act of humility originated from a
stance of POWER, not WEAKNESS > to show your opponent that he has
    power to cause harm.

I love the repeated claims by Christians about what various bits of the bible "really mean", when they don't like what it literally says. It's espcially fun when they do their best to ignore the context of those words.
"38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you." Matthew 5
Yep, inconvenient, and not one exception given like Christians want to pretend. This version of JC is the same one that says that *nothing* is worth putting your soul in danger, to the point of this character insisting that one should maim oneself earlier in the chapter and that insists that you love your enemies at the end of it.

@@SweepingDeveloper Unfortunately, Christians can't even agree on what this god considers a sin, so you have no idea what you are doing in getting rid of anything.
Ray Comfort offered to debate anyone and I signed up. You, like all Christians, point fingers and claim anyone you don't like is a "false teacher". Surprise, you all are.
It's always great fun to watch the circular firing squad with all of the many many versions of Christianity all accusing each other of the same thing. Unsurprisingly, not one of you can show that you are indeed a true believer, per what jesus promised in the bible.

I think it was changed@@reganoryan2292. Every other passage in that chapter fulfills the law based on Jesus' suggestion...except this one. There is no eye or tooth being fulfilled, its just a black eye and a chipped tooth. "Resist the devil and he will flee from you" into "Do not resist an evil person"?? No...I think it was changed and I'm not following it.

Hey guys your not correct over the turn the other cheek info your teaching people.
Jesus was referring to the story of Micaiah from 1st kings chapter 22.
The point Jesus was making is , don’t be a beta male B word . When facing adversity all the way up to death , stand your ground and do/say what God said to do/say .
Someone wants to go a mile with you ?! Go TWO miles. Someone wants to go a round in the boxing ring ? Go TWO rounds! . Etc

Giving away items in first century terms: folks, these people lived in caves (the Bible doesn't use that graphic term--but if you visit those countries, and do some historical research--clearly, you come to the conclusion that they lived in caves: for many reasons)--but basically, Jesus was telling people who were cave dwellers and owned a sheep, a goat, a spoon and a bowl to give it all away--while they are just trying to survive day to day--that is difficult for our culture to grasp (where items literally come out of the sky into our hands)...example: fishermen in the first century on the Sea of Galilee (think Peter and Andrew): their fishing season was three months--for the entire year--and they didn't catch a lot every single day...now, you tell someone with a three month growing season with few pesticides, that they need to give it all away and trust God to provide for them day to day...that is where Jesus was...it would be like Peter saying: 'okay, sure...whatever you say...yeah, right..." (remember that these are hardworking, semi-poor, rural Jews--money and survival was foremost in their minds--every day, all day)...dts/usa

Wow. How wrong this is. You must message me. It’s about equality. Example if you were a master you slap your slave with the back of your hand if you offer and turn the other cheek, they slap you with the front of their hand like an equal. example an eye for an eye. Equal. Tooth for a tooth equals.
I’m not sure about the clothes part. There is more to that. I have to check my notes. If I get robbed. I say well they needed it more than I and maybe help my brother out by offering him more. This is how I perceived it.
