  • Concerning retaliation, Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:38-42 to walk an extra mile, give up your cloak, and to turn the other cheek. In this lesson today we will break down the methodology of "creative resistance" (peaceful resistance) and apply it to Jesus' teaching from the Sermon on the Mount.
    Exact passage from the NRSV:
    38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

    Jesus lived in a right-handed world where left hands were reserved only for unclean tasks. Therefore, we can assume that the person doing the hitting would have used their right hand. The only way to strike someone on the right cheek with your right hand is a backhanded slap. Such a blow connotes an insult, not a fistfight, and was a normal way to reprimand someone over whom you had power (e.g. masters to slaves, husbands to wives, Romans to Jews). To strike your equal in such a manner was socially and legally unacceptable carrying with it a huge fine.

    I think EVERY time I ever heard anyone discuss this verse they all think it's their job to make it clear that we aren't "door mats" and we aren't letting people disrespect us. This lukewarm interpretation is in my view inspired by modern society which is built around justifying a life of greed and hoarding. Greed and hoarding is not just an issue of materialism; it's also an issue of any excess... including excess in ideas we hold about ourselves and how we ought to be treated (like standards of respect). Jesus's message is actually in my view a message of radical asceticism (so radical that it even applies to abstract concepts). In a world that is full of suffering the only way to end suffering is to stop devouring and hoarding. We always feel we need more..... including more respect, but actually there already isn't enough to go around. Asking for more means someone else will be devoured in some manner. We turn the other cheek bc we aren't entitled to even basic respect. That is just an idea. Have you ever lost a friend bc they didn't meet your standards of respecting you? Your idea of respect for yourself is more important than another person? Thats pretty ridiculous. We keep peace by allowing people to make mistakes. Respect is not ours to be so greedy for. Any other explanation of this passage is merely justifying modern greed and the arrangements that sustain and perpetuate it. "Turn the other cheek" in fact DOES mean to allow others to disrespect you.... to disrespect your grandiose ideas about how you deserve to be treated.

      In the case of defending others, it violates the turn the other cheek principle but if you don't defend someone that violates the "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" principle and the "love your neighbor" principle. So, if I am sinning either way I may as well go all the way in the sin. You don't love your neighbor if you allow your neighbor to get hurt. Also, if I would rather be defended, then doing unto others means defending.
      Also, arguably if you stop someone from committing a severe sin, you're also stopping them from facing severe consequences in the afterlife so it can be reconciled with "love your enemy". This is consistent with Matthew 18:6.
      I would rather be shot than allowed to do something that would condemn me to a far greater level, so I am also "doing unto others" If I confess my sins to the Lord I am forgiven anyways. The unbeliever who doesn't confess their sins isn't forgiven.

      While people do use mental gymnastics, this isn't mental gymnastics. This seems to be the historical and cultural context these sayings were said in.
      How much of a fool would we have to be to know that it is Roman law to only be able to force a foreign person to walk 1 mile, and Jesus say "when your enemy asks you to walk 1 mile, walk 2". Or "turn the other cheek" in a society that dominated with the right hand and backhand?

      Yea it meant what it said through the lense of a 1st century writing where everyone knew the cultural norms of the day. Fast forward thousands of years later and you got wild interpretations. I think what many of us might misunderstand is that this is specifically for situations where a misguided but sensible opponent thinks they are right in doing that opressive or unkind thing they do to us, which has the possibility of them realizing the wrongness of their actions.

    Here is the verse in the New KIng James from the book of Mathew 5 : “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
    I actually think you are right somehow, but can you explain why Jesus says "not to resist an evil person" . He says "whoever" slaps you. He doesn't say "If a soldier slaps you..."

I was always told (and I'm not even sure if this is legit, but it's what I believed) by my boxing coach to NOT hit with knuckles without at least a wrap, if not gloves, too. He told us to throw punches the same way, just hit with the palm heel. So, being in some fights outside of the ring, I took that to heart and knocked them out with open hands :D :D :D :D. Now, though, I've heard arguments against and for both fists and open hands without protective wraps or gloves, so I really don't know anymore. Either way, it worked for me and I never sprained a wrist doing it.

    • @jeremynicoletti9060
      @jeremynicoletti9060 4 года назад +3

      That's a good point, but Goliath wasn't coming to reprimand as a superior does to an inferior, but rather as an invader to destroy a nation. There would likely be no point trying to invoke these sorts of emotions in an invader. In the case of the Romans, however, they were also invaders, but in occupation and the context is very different from a battlefield. I'm also asking this question. I hope this video's explanation is true, but we still have to acknowledge how many apostles were executed and the martyrs of the Christian faith. Jews thought the messiah would be come as a military leader and lead Israel to geopolitical victory and prominence. Jesus was not what was expected.

They get physical things given to him but what good is only getting physical things when this world is temporary and the ultimate goal is to get to heaven? God’s Word is a two edge sword. If you find yourself in a bad situation where someone is hitting you or mistreating you it’s you responsibility to protect yourself by leaving. Don’t allow anyone to abuse you in anyway, shape or form. We have a spirit to discern what to put up with and not to put up with. What if someone breaks into your house with a gun? Authority in the Roman empire needed a religion to make people into obedient sheep that will never live their lives and grow enough to challenge her power. Getting slapped around and stay poor are nessesery for that purpose.Thats why they forced christianity by death penalty. Back then they had christianity now we have technology for that.

    I prefer the method of creative resistance espoused by Kwai Chia Cain in the 1970s TV series ‘ Kung Fu ‘. He used skilled self defence in a very creative way to teach his attackers a lesson ! The point is that you can return force with force and achieve the same result and also retain your dignity. However, trying to turn the hearts of the perpetrator by enduring more suffering and not fighting back won’t work if the aggressor is a psychopath. He will keep making you walk mile after mile, after mile until you collapse and die of exhaustion. There are a lot assumptions being made in this video about perpetrators.

    Incorrect. "Turn the other cheek" means Get over it already & move on. In other words, if someone literally slaps your cheek, let them slap the other one as well. It isn't a permanent bodily injury to you such as someone causing you to lose an eye & that person is responsible for retribution for you. In other words, "An eye for an eye" doesn't mean you should cut out the eye of the person who caused injury to your eye.
