- Metallica perform "Sad But True" off of their 1991 self titled black album with Metal Church guitarist John Marshall who stood in on rhythm guitar for the band when James Hetfield injured his arms. Recorded live @ The Fillmore in San Francisco, California on December 5th, 2011 (the first of four Metallica 30th birthday concerts).
James should have ditched the guitar and put on an arm cast for this song while John plays rhythm, just for the memories

The 6'7" guitar monster helped through the tough times when metallica had a full touring schedule when james burned his arm! Was their guitar tech at one point but left to join Metal Church then quit due to health issues

So good as a 3 guitar song, so much heavier and the extra album parts are a nice addition

john marshall is one of my childhood heroes, my first thrash album my dad gave me of metal church was blessing in disguise
@jugthugular He was Kirk's guitar tech in the 80's and into the 90's sometime. He filled in on guitar for James on three occasions. I like what James said about him, "If you're a roadie (or something like that) learn the band's songs!". John saved them the hassle of having to reschedule the shows. There's a pic somewhere of John onstage standing next to Cliff two nights before the accident. The next night James was back on guitar.

John filled in for James the 1st time on the Master of Puppets tour. The accident he was talking about was the bus accident that killed Cliff, just as James got back on guitar.

I would love to see that pic. I been searching for videos of John Marshall filling in for James. I've found a few but they're all from the 92 accident. I can't find any from 86 if you know of any please let me know

FUCK THIS SHOWS ARE AWOSOME MAN ! Metallica playing their songs fully,with everything bridges before the solos, solos they don't play at other shows and now this part at the chorus Marshal is playing ! It sounds fucking awesome with it !
For people who don't know who John Marshall is he used to be the guitar tech for Kirk Hamett until he joined the band metal church in 1989. Played guitar for the band when Hetfield broke his wrist skateboarding during part of the 86 tour while James recovered. Also in 1991 when James got burnt during the Pyro accident in Montreal
Not that happened on August 8th 1992.
The most interesting part of this performance is John's guitar fill during chorus is more interesting than that of Kirk.

The actor who played Jaws is Richard Kiel. He is 7'2". At 6'7", John Marshall is still tall of course. Not as tall as Mr. Kiel, obviously. He (John) does look a bit like Mr. Keil, however.

In a perfect worl MetallicA would have Jason and John still in the band. 3 guitarists (with James also on lead vox) then Rob and Jason both on bass but Jason doing lots of backing vox (which he does perfectly).
John was great when I saw them in Foxboro Ma after James got burned in Montreal, John was doing duties. You know James wish his throad got burnt over his hand.... Rembmer John in Metal Church back in the day too. Not often you see a 6'10" backup guitar player hehe...Cool clips

James had an accident with pyrotechnics on a show in the 90´. After the that he was not allowed by doctor to play guitare for a while. John filled in to go on with the tour.

You can see that John is a bit awkward with his length, you see him bent over a little and his back seems very stiff probaly because he was used to make him self a little smaller not to get noticed.

@ToughestMilkman I AM a bass player. I started playing after hearing The $5.98 EP and watching Cliff 'em All. Cliff Burton along with John Entwistle (who sometimes *GOD FORBID* used a pick - listen to "My Generation") are my fave bassists of all time! I use my FINGERS on my girlfriend, and on my (Rickenbacker) bass. *Neither complain*.

@nordmartv Well, yes, but my take on that is, he blew his voice out over 20 years ago. Not many people are the same after that (Harry Nilsson being the extreme case.) So, James really has to be careful singing, especially live. Also the fact that Jame isn't 23 years old anymore. I think he's doing just fine provided the circumstances. Hell, even Dave Mustaine is sounding pretty rough nowadays.
