The Reaction of The Alcohol Ink and Resin Was Unexpected. (Alcohol Drip Bowl)

- It all started when I was watching a crafter make coasters. Then for the last two years I have thought about doing something like it on a grander scale. Recently the dreams started and I decided if I ever wanted to get this project out of my head I needed to give it a go. I used Let's Resin Alcohol Inks and TotalBoat Thickset resin to make what I call the Alcohol Ink Drip Bowl.

On the next one, don't forget to use the pinata blanco blanco. That's the sinker white that gets the inks to dance and swirl around.
This one looks BEAUTIFUL. And as the other person commented, use your gloves hand to apply the resin finish. This is how we apply it when making custom tumblers. Helps to make sure you have a full, even and smooth coverage. Can't wait to see you make another!
Hey Thanks for the tip. The Blanco Blanco is the one I ran out of. I just used the last of it in another pour I am doing. I will have to order more.
Instead of using a brush to apply the resin finish use your gloved hand. Trust me your finishes will be glass smooth. You can still actually apply it with the brush but then immediately follow up with just rubbing your gloved hand over the surface. If you keep just smoothing it out with your fingers as long and flat as you can, and continuously moving them, you'll begin to get a feeling for when it starts to thicken up. Just be careful not to keep smoothing until it gets too thick because it'll clump up in spots. After just a couple attempts you'll really get a feeling of exactly when to stop for a perfect finish. Keep doing everything else exactly the same. ♥️♥️♥️
Wow, thanks. That is an awesome tip. I resin finished this one and still not happy. I'll sand it down again and try this.
@@MoonpieCreations yw 🙂
Imperfections and bubbles just add character, it show its truly hand made
Thank you Kris
Beautiful. I like the stippling effect. It reminds me of old-fashioned float glass.
Thank you! 😊
I think it looks neat. 😎👍😎👍😎
Thanks Mike
This came out much better than I expected. REALLY nice.
Thank you Michal.
I love the smoke effect...really cool...glad to hear you are moving the tech stuff...really into your wood and resin crafting not so much the other stuff.
I will say this. I will never upload a tech video on a Thursday. I only post them on Monday or Tuesday. It may be a little while before I stop posting them here. I have to build up the other channel first.
@@MoonpieCreations I still watch all your videos because I love learning about all the new stuff coming out...
That turned out a lot different than I thought it would. It's beautiful.
Thanks Jean
I think it was beautiful. Well done 👍🏼
Thank you! 😊
I didn't know being a grandma would be so great!!! I've gotten behind on videos I luv to watch
Haha grandparenting is the best!
Pretty sweet brother can't wait to see what you come up with next
You and me both! 😂
There's something about the projects you say you've dreamed about and need to get out of your head. Inspiring stuff!
Thank you. I have two other bowls I have dreamt about for at lest a year now, but can figure out how to make them. I tried to draw them out, but can't seem to get what I was going for.
Love the inky effect on the sides!!
Thank you.
When you first took it out I thought not good . The finished product was absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Susan
"Neat little experiment", I love it! Thank you for getting it out of your head and into putting into fruition. Keep it up please and thank you 🤘
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm hoping my schedule isn't as hectic as last year and I'm able to get in the shop to make more videos.
Loving the bowl, delicate colouring. It was deceiving to start with before you turned it. The colours looked heavy. It’s a great result.
Thank you Alison
No matter what you do I'll be sticking around ken, you bring out some great content 👍
I truly appreciate that. It's very disheartening to say the least. Once I hit 70k RUclips started taking subscribers. They took over 2k in one day, saying they delete fake accounts. Then I had subscribers complaining that I deleted them from my page. SMH. I complained to YT and they took 600 more the same day. lol. Now the steady drop of 10-15 a day since 2 Jan. My motivation to post videos is non existent as my views went from 50-70k a video to 3-5k a video. All I want to do is hit 100k. lol
@@MoonpieCreations
They really need to stop choking off their content creators like you. You don't get into politics or any of the craziness going on so I can't understand why they think taking subscribers away from you is even necessary. I just skip the videos I don't wanna watch and wait for your usual creative content. You're my favorite wood turner so I'm not going anywhere either.❤️👍
@@MoonpieCreations Yeah YT has gone to the dogs recently. and I'm 🤔wondering whether my new channel will make it on here! or am I better off going back (and I can't believe I'm saying this) to Facebook?
I know I had All notifications on, but didn't get a notice for this video! Just checked-they were turned off, lame. This project is gorgeous!
Cool bowl Ken. Thx and take care.
Thanks 👍
I like the way it came out!
Thank you
Started out pretty as you was dropping the inks, came out of the mold looking like a dark ring around a clear center and came off the lathe simply stunning love the end result. Beautiful flaws and all. ❤❤❤❤
Oh thank you!
Cool effect, Ken. Beautiful bowl. Take care. 😊
Thanks, you too!
I enjoy all your content including the tech reviews.
I appreciate that! It will be a little while till they are fully on that page, but in the mean time the version I put over there will be a different edit. So basically more content.
Like you said, “Happy accident.” That looks pretty nice!
Thank you.
Beautiful l like the sides 💙💙💙💙💙💙
Thank you! 🤗
It looks great brother. I hope you have a great rest of your week. One love man.
Much appreciated
Looking good Ken! Can't wait to see the collaboration with Doug.
You and me both!
Cool project
Thanks Tim
Wow! Pretty! Nice work!
Thank you! 😊
That is a cool design.
Thank you Laura
It is a cool effect.
Thanks Mark
This is awesome and gorgeous! I want it I want it I want it! ❤
Thank you Beverly
That piece is amazing!!
Thank you
That came out very cool!
I appreciate the kind words
Ken when you use the Alcohol inks, try dripping white onto of the colored drops for a more cool effect on color changes. Love the Alcohol drip ink dish.
I need to order the blanco blanco
Very cool effect with the acid inks!
Thank you
Looks great sir have a great day ✌️
Thanks, you too!
I thought there would be too much colour but it turned out quite subtle and delicate, I like it. Good piece :)
Thank you! 😊The truth is I was going for to much color. lol
Mhmm that’s stunning!
Thanks Kristi
I'm still here my guy, I'll stick witcha. 👍
I really appreciate that. I'm not sure why, but I am steady loosing 10-15 subscribers a day. So you saying that really makes me fee better. Stay Cool!
its amazing that when it hardened it looked completely dark with very little clear space. but then you start carving the color goes and it goes clear with the dribbles. love how it came out in the end
Yes, exactly. So strange to me.
Awesome job, looks good
Thanks 👍
WHAT !!!!! No Dramatic P Music for the resin pour ? that piece did come out really cool looking, I have still not managed to get a perfect resin pour finish on a project yet , see ya next time! Stay COOL !
I think I'm going to hold off on Sexy Time Music for a little while. It's over played. lol
when you put the resin finish on it i said 'that's far better' it reminds of the bowls you would see on the coffee tables in the 70s, now all you need is to throw in your car keys...
haha, About half way through hollowing it I though about making it an ash try for my cigars. How cool would that be? But then decided my time was running out to get the video done and carving and sanding would take to long.
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
This now gives me an idea lol. I've gotten some alcohol inks and they aren't as dark as I'd like, but this opens the door. Always an inspiration. Thanks again Ken.
To the Blanca will help they disperse and maintain in the middle. Just a tip
I like it.
Thanks Jake
It may not be what you wanted, but it's still really neat. My dog was watching with me and she likes it too. And yay for another actual video. I'm sticking around no matter what.
Bill
I appreciate that Bill. Tell you pooch hey.
Nice platter Ken.
Thanks 👍
This project came out in a surprising way. Love it and can't wait for more videos! ❤️👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Awesome, Ken. Looks like dendritic agate, which is one of my favorite stones!
Cool, thanks I'll have to look them up.
The bowl you've made is gorgeous, just gorgeous. The idea to use alcohol in the resin is so cool. The effect looks unique. Love it, love it. Thank you so much for this video gift.
Thank you so much.
Nice job Ken!
Thanks
You do you man I’m loving all the vids
Well thank you for that. I appreciate it.
I plan to be as talented as you someday you inspire me keep doing what you love no matter the views
Not sure what you were expecting, but I love it! Those squiggly drips in the side of that dish are pretty! I think that would make for a great fruit dish of maybe a bread dish. You know, to layer pieces of bread for the dinner table, bread and butter. 😊 welcome back, we sure did miss ya! Even if I have been busier than a one armed paper hanger. 🤣
I’m excited to see if you can accomplish what you were expecting, just to see how beautiful of a dish you can turn!
I will try this again soon. Thanks
Pretty cool! I’ve been playing with alcohol inks & I appreciate watching your efforts. I hope I can find your new channel!
Thank you Karen.
hey bud the bowls looks like lava flow well done
Cool Description Bunny. Thanks
Really beautiful dish and that technique has inspired me in my own endeavors. 😊 Ken don’t let the ones bailing out on your channel get you down, I think you’re amazing and I look forward to any content you are able to put out.
Thanks so much
It's absolutely beautiful! I love how the colors have formed, and the glow of them...loveliness! You have an excellent eye for color. Sorry to hear you're leaving youtube...you create such beauty, and you:ve taught me so much about resin, and about wood. I hope you keep making great videos wherever it is you go. I'll moss seeing you work.
I'm not leaving you! lol My subscribers are unsubscribing. I intend to be posting for a while.
You should make the center solid black with a splash of color inside the black. Would make it look like a giant 👁️.
Haha that would be cool.
I watched some of your videos and I like your work. I also saw your post about doing a colab with Doug 👍 can't wait to see that. Any friend of Doug is a friend of mine, you got my subscription 😊
First, Thank you. Second I would tell to many people Doug is your friend. 🤣It's ok I won't hold it against you. I got his package today and am sending his off this morning.
Cool effect. I’m a little surprised that so much of the color was lost as you turned it. But it came out really cool.
It all settled to the bottom and the sides. Wish it would have stayed a bit.
@@MoonpieCreations still lovely
Hi 👋, I am new to your work shop, that turned out looking very good nice, It reminds me of a glass manufacturing process ,
That I cannot remember the name of. I look forward to your next art project.
PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
Hey Phil, welcome to my channel and thank you for those kind words.
I confess I'm not that interested in the tech reviews, but that wouldn't make me unsubscribe.
Neat project!
Thank you. Some of those reviews are funny if that helps. 😂
You’re supposed to use white drops in between the color drops to push the colors down so it will layer. You might get lucky it’ll be decent on the other side but I’ve tried it on coasters and I forgot the white and I was not happy. You got lucky though. It still looks pretty good.
I'll take lucky any day. 😉
Looks lovely. I'm surprised a power sander left ridges in that though 🤔. Strange.
I know, right?
I use alcohol inks in resin all the time… as in all art too many colors mixed together creates …Mud. I’m shocked the colors are amazing no Mud. I really liked the frosted look before you added a clear top coat. Top coat is nice too. ❤
Haha, I have more ideas. No mud for me.
I love your channel and content. I am not gong anywhere. :)
Thank you. So happy to hear that!
I think it would be really cool if you did the ink drops in stages to build up to the thickness your after, and it might even give a kind of 3D effect to it
That is a great idea. Thanks
@@MoonpieCreations your welcome and keep up the great videos I really appreciate and enjoy them
Missed the sexy pour music! It might not be what you were after, but it's still very cool. I like it.
Thank you. I think I will hold off on the pour music for a bit. I like to keep you guys wanting it..lol
@@MoonpieCreations Hah! You're such a tease.
You need the white that usually comes with the alcohol inks. The white c-deeper on top of the colors is what makes the colors sink and make the petri effect. Either way it looks great
I am ordering it. I used the last of it in another blank I am casting. Thanks.
Looks kinda like blown glass, very cool. bummer all the other colors vanished.
True, but I still liked how it came out. The next one though......
Myriams Nature, here on RUclips, has an extensive Playlist of using alcohol ink in resin.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check that channel out.
I gots a brain fart! What would happen if you use the same type mold but sit it on an old turntable or anything that spins. Wouldn't ya think you'd get a pinwheel effect? Maybe pour 1/2 inch of clear, add 1 or 2 colors, then another 1/2 of clear. It might not look right without porn music? You know more about resins than I do. :) You do know at some point you have to make a resin Moonpie.
It would have to be a slow turn table, but maybe? I have a small turn table that goes very slow. Maybe an experiment is in order.
what happens in these dreams you have? i can’t say i’ve dreamt about an inanimate object. mine are usually action packed and story lined if that makes sense. anyway it’s not the first time your dreams have made you make great work. i think the black/blue hexagon bowl came from your dreams too 😆
Haha, Thank you.
Awesome job man as always! How long does it take that flex shot to dry before you can pour the resin?
Hey Billy, it dries in about 2-3 hrs. I usually wait till the next day.
@@MoonpieCreations ok thank you very much
that's really lovely!
what happens if you put the ink in first?
The resin would most likely mix them pretty well. I think.
Great bowl. I've seen a lot of crafters do the alcohol inks in resin. I know there is some reaction when you use a specific white ink. Let me try to get the name of it.
Pinata white ink. If be curious to see you try one with that.
Yes, I saw someone else posted that also. I used the last bit of that I had on another bowl I am working on. I'm going to order some more or head down to Hobby Lobby and grab some.
What, if anything, do you put on your chuck to keep the resin off of it?
Nothing. It comes off really easy. I chip it off with a razor.
@@MoonpieCreations thanks! Forgot to tell you, great video again this week.
Have you ever watched Roshni Ward's HOW TO MAKE A RESIN ASHTRAY USING THE CLOUD METHOD WITH ALCOHOL INKS video?
I have not. I will look it up.
How hot is the resin you’re being sprayed with?😮
Only hot as it hits my hand. Cools off very very quickly.
I thought you we going to spin it to make the pattern when the epoxy was liquid.
Someone else suggested that and I think it is cause for a little experiment with a slow moving turn table. Thanks.,
i think, you dripping the ink to high. lower how you drip and it may not sink! just a thought. x
I think the real issue was I did not use Blanco, which is a white that helps keep the colors separated. But height always plays a factor for sure.
Blah blah blah blah 😊 still love your projects even with the blah blah .........
😂🤣😂🤣
I suppose you might call this a successful proof of concept bowl. Maybe try not to use every dye color. There were a lot of darker colors. Also when you mix red, blue, and yellow, you make brown.
Fair enough. I think the big issue is I did not use the Blanco Blanco because I was out. That is the one that is white and weighs the colors down. I'm going to order more and try again.
Bill Alexander (Bob's art teacher) said 'happy little accident'. Bob Ross wasn't even original enough not to steal sayings. You know the irony...Bob passed before Bill. They all used paint thinner in their wet on wet technique and ended up with cancer...all of them. So very sad.
Thanks I did not know that.
@@MoonpieCreations yeah, they had a big fight over it. But it was all for naught in the end because Bob died before Bill from the cancer/paint thinner thing. Now there's a 'new recipe' for the wet paint on paint and paint thinner no longer has the toxic fumes.
Fun to watch you trying something new. Looking forward to subbing to your new channel too!
Awesome Thanks.
