    As someone who works in psych, works with the homeless population, works with social workers, and literally the office next to mine is dedicated to assisting the homeless population who use our resources at our agency I can say professionally sheltered homelessness and couch surfing are forms of homelessness. Like many people have mentioned tents, cars, and homeless shelters technically have a roof over your head yet you classify that as homeless because that fits your definition better. Your idea of what homeless really is and really looks like and your own personal experiences can differ from other people's reality! You don't know the reality of how she lived we all know social media is a farcity anyways. She could be portraying it better or worse than what the reality is, but attacking her and invalidating her experience isn't the answer. Many homeless people struggle coming forward and getting the help they need because someone always has it worse, and if you scroll through the comments section you can see why.

    • @railabeouf
      @railabeouf Год назад +9

      That’s fair and thanks for commenting this cuz she did also mention that she’s very private. From a surface level I was confused by the comments too cus she wasn’t couch surfing, her parents let her stay with her which doesn’t make her homeless IMHO. But then again if she had a home and then had to seek shelter through parents then yeah I get how she considers that homeless. Been in a rocky situation w that kinda

      I would say homelessness has taken on many different forms nowadays. But I will say she and her mother and dog was displaced, not having a place of their own, and not permanent, so in a sense they were homeless. She could have said “After staying here and there we finally found a home to live in”, which I think is more accurate of their situation.

    I also grew apart from my school friends but made so many new friends in my late 20s. 31 now and most of my closest friends I've met in the past 5 years or so. You're a lovely person and will make great friends once you feel more settled. I mostly met people through house/flat sharing (the norm here in London) or work but also met people through the gym and dog walking. There are often meet-ups you can go to for things you have an interest in, not something I've done but I know others who have met friends through them. Another great way is volunteering for a cause you care about - you'll likely meet kind and likeminded people.

    I currently live in a shared house (also known as a halfway house) for my mental health and under definition of the word, I am also homeless. I prefer living in a shared house though as it saves me money and I can't live on my own due to my mental health issues. I find it interesting how people view the word "homeless," you do not have to be living out in the streets to be the only definition of homeless. People who spend their lives traveling in vans are homeless, people living at other peoples houses or couch surfing are homeless. Just because I have a car, phone and laptop doesnt mean I cant be homeless

So I see why people are taking it wrong. Being homeless is a very serious thing. I’m also the same!!! I get seasonal depression. Only during summer. It makes me miserable. I can understand the backlash here from misrepresenting with a word. Really enjoy your contents, Julie and keep on sharing! Maybe a more accurate title to use that won't garner misinterpretations is "I was in limbo", or "displaced","I was in residential /housing instability", "I was nomadic", "I was in a (housing) crisis" etc. Because I was in a similar situation with losing my house and was also in the market to look for another place for many, many months. And inbetween that time we had to rent or go elsewhere, but I never considered myself as homeless inbetween that time. Could be a generational understanding, because back then, no one ever wanted to label themselves as "homeless" because it was a tag of shame. It meant that you had neither money, means or even family support to be able to live under a roof. No trolling intended, just an observation from both sides. Really glad to see that you've now found yourself a place to really call your own & that you're living life to the fullest!🎉

      i knew there would be comments like this so im gonna address it now. i never said i had no roof over my head or i lived in the streets. no, i did not live at my family for free- we paid rent. my mom, me (two grown adults) and my dog cramped into a small room that could barely fit a queen bed. hmmm you have to qualify for a house??? i think you didnt watch the full video.

      Situations like this definitely feel like homelessness. You have no privacy. You're filled with anxiety because you're subject to someone else's rules and regulations for their household. You can be kicked out at any time. Tensions flare easily in situations like this and there's little room for an outlet. Even if it's not 100% homeless it's still very unstable living.

    You were not homeless sweetie. I interview people all day some are actually homeless living in a tent, car, storage, and just on the street.

    • @eatnplaytoday
      @eatnplaytoday Год назад +10

      Technically, if you are staying with someone temporarily, and that person could ask you to leave at any time, your living situation likely meets the definition of homelessness. Julie and her mom was basically bumming at their relatives’ home… I too used to work with homeless persons. A portion of them were transient and moved between relatives and/or friends.

    • @Cyanpatagonus
      @Cyanpatagonus Год назад +2

      @@eatnplaytodayif I went by that definition, I was homeless for many years as opposed to one year. I disagree with that because the year I was truly homeless was so different than couch surfing. I lived on a friends couch in her apartment for a YEAR. Know what that does to the mind and body? It’s better than when I was really, truly homeless. I was warm at least. I used to get frostbite because I live in Iowa

    • @ixisenpaii
      @ixisenpaii Год назад +4

      @@Cyanpatagonussorry to hear that, must have been hard ❤. But remember not having a place of your own, jumping to place to place to finally stay with your family. Just to save and get a house is still a form of being homeless, the name is just called homelessness.
