Cafe Offers Coffee Cups Made of Clay as Greener Option

- Coffee, we just can’t live without it, but our on-the-go consumption sends billions of single-use coffee cups to landfills every year. A company in California is trying out an alternative cup in hopes of reducing waste. Verve Coffee Roasters tells KCBS it will be offering a ceramic disposable cup, hoping customers will want the more environmentally friendly option. The creator of the ceramic cups says it’s not exactly a novel idea. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
People aren't seeming to understand that this is not about the re-useability of the cups, it's just replacing plastic with a more environmentally friendly alternative. Plastic does not break down when put in trash or landfills, but the clay cups will. Too many nay-sayers in these comments. It's a good idea!
But how is this better than traditional disposable paper cups?
@@theotheleo6830Doesn’t require a tree.

Great idea. They serve chai like that from street vendors in India.
Street vendors 3D print their cups? AMAZING!!!
@@sdigf3167 I think in India, they hand made the clay cups. Quiet amazing.
@@kellyhou9594 No, it's actually the same company making these. Or one of them anyway.

Yeah, I saw a video of a family of chai clay cup makers. They worked 16-hour days, 7 days per week, and made little profit, but they were happy. One of the workers sent for his bride from their village and surprised her with a room that he had recently rented. It was the size of a closet, but she absolutely loved it. He told her it would also be used to store extra clay cups. I found it to be interesting af.

Anything they gain they lose by having to fire these cups a high temperatures. They leave that part out.

This is a great idea for coffee shops, fast food and restaurants to start doing this now. I really hope this will work its way into stores for ready made food too.
Props to This Coffee Company for Trying New Inventive Ways of Being Green.
GREAT! More of this please
What a clever idea! Hopefully it'll catch on.
So if this is 3d printed on the go, it can't be in any way kiln fired to seal it up, the last thing I want his a hot liquid going into a container "mined from the Earth" that is in no way sealed. And if it is some way sealed I don't think this is as composable as advertised. What happened to the concept of paper cups?
I assume they're trying to replace plastic and paper altogether. But I don't pretend to know anything about 3d printers. But The materials would have to be incredibly cheap to obtain, cheaper than paper and plastic. And the energy needed to mass produce these cups would have to be decent enough to make the prices not go sky high.
i don’t know what you mean by “on the go”, i assumed they’re bulk printing and firing them and the coffee shop gets pallets and then probably upcharges for them
the term "paper" cup is misleading because it's partially made of plastic, which is what actually holds the liquid. from what i read, when you drink a hot beverage, the plastic film inside the cup degrades over time, releasing microplastics into your drink.
I could see that it's coated on the inside.
Brilliant idea! 🙌💖
hope they test for lead and cadmium
....I can live without it... never had a cup in my life.
Then what do you use to drink out of?
Beautiful
That's not greener.
The amount of energy to make a clay cup is many times greater than paper.
Once you factor in the customers who throw away the clay cup after just a single use, it will equal at least a dozen paper cups or more per average.
Exactly. The firing process negates any environmental gains. And now there will be thin glass shards everywhere.
Well they're trying to replace plastic altogether, but I doubt it's a suitable replacement for paper cups. Either way, they're thinking in the right direction as far as using less wasteful products. And I wouldn't know about the energy consumption of 3d printers, that might make the product prices go up even more.
People need to just be responsible and bring their own cup with them from home, I’ve been using a thermos, and it works great, I also bring my own Tupperware to restaurants for leftovers
@@lindsaychurch8749 It's not the printing. It takes huge amounts of energy to fire these from clay to ceramic.
How many times do you use a disposable paper cup?
How creative Art classes should make these
I can see using the ceramic cups for seed starters or for plants to have a temporary place until planted. I don't drink coffee but it will be worth a cup of coffee to test my planting theory. 😃 ☕
Ooooh! Good option. I'm definitely going to try this for sure.

If people don't reuse the thing it'll end up spending more energy
I like it! Hopefully it catches on
Clay has lead
Not all clay
Overconsumption is the main cause of landfills same with this. Not the most sustainable for the buisness unless they're charging more for the packaging. BYO is a better option
Is it a greener option considering they have to use an over wouldn’t it make gases?
Still no one says how much they cost !!!
Hopefully this will catch on here in the U.S.🤞
MMMMM, Flower Pot Java!
What is a porsolin cup????
An interesting idea!
Good stuff
Now they just need to invent a lid.
That's called a mug
A very poorly made mug that they charge you regular mug prices for.
A mug is defined by the thickness of its walls, not by its material. These aren't mugs.
Bravo! Thats what we always used in India 🙏🏾
It's a cool concept but anyone who's "on the go" with a hot cup of coffee wants a lid.
You forgot to mention, how much does the customer have to add for this special cup?
What's the water and carbon footprint of the clay cups compared to paper and plastic? What's the cost per cup compared to others? Is the process patented or open source? What is the manufacturing process? So many unasked, unanswered, and unaddressed questions.
like the bags at grocers, educate your clients to bring their own cup !!! How did the grocers do it ? THEY STOPPED GIVING OUT BAGS!!
Food safety laws do not allow for that.
@@AtarahDerekplenty of places allow you to use your own cups in the UK and Europe. Surely something similar could be done in the US.
@@AtarahDerek why ? i see McD do it all the time... the difference is the employee doesn't handle the cup... They simply pour the coffee and only if the cup is clean.

How much lead in the clay?
At present, the FDA doesn't require dishes to be 100% lead-free.
Acidic food or drink is especially likely to cause lead to leach out of ceramics.
Great idea🍀🍀🍀🍀👍🏻
Nice idea, but just bring your own cup, or better yet, make your coffee at home! Save a bunch of money too.
Main problem is that clay can still become heated because liquid can transfer heat and cold temp to materials like clay that liquid can transfer any temp to but there’s no caution to warn of any hot liquid meaning restaurant is gonna get sued when accidents happen
They come with sleeves though
Why would they get sued? You do know mcdonalds started that whole anti sue campaign as a way to shame a woman who suffered 2nd degree burns on 90 percent of her hooha. She only sued because they refused to cover her medical costs, people don't sue for hot coffee nor do they sell it at boiling temps anymore. Also the heat transfer is going to be the safe as a ceramic cup, which doesn't have a label...do you notice restaurants dont have caution hot on their mugs??
What a strange argument considering the alternative is a plastic coated paper, id trust a clay cup more to not burn my hand lol
They’re disposable! Ohh cool
clay is known to hold many toxic metals like lead, how do you know its processed and checked well it its so neutralizing!
It’s not FDA approved. Just an idea they came up with. Definitely can’t commercialize it 😅
Fr just use glass
Plus, if it is fired, it is now glass. It doesn't just degrade like they say. And if not fired, they would have to coat it with something as clay is porous.
@@rongooden6545the FDA literally approves the use of toxic chemicals. Take Partially Hydrogenated Oil (PHO) as an example
@@davidhowell1415And fluorosilic acid.
Clay cup is used since ancient era.
Glass and ceramic and paper left the chat.

Wow headline of the year
Wow a cup made of clay how incredibly innovative
WAIT THIS IS ACTUALLY A W THE CUPS MUST FEEL HIGHER QUALITY TOO
I just use plastic everything and throw it away afterwards even silverware saves me so much time on dishes!
This is not cost effective for both the consumer and establishments. A compostable paper cup is fine. Personally, if politicians would do more virtual meetings rather than flying around in their private jets on a regular basis, it would help the planet way more.
Paper cups aren't that good the environment, either.
So it's ceramic but not ceramic
Maybe add an incentive for bringing your own cup!? $2 less with your own. Then you can use there in house washable cups, pour into customers cup so that cup never comes into contact with the equipment. But if it did, wouldn't be any different than any gas station or eatery that encourages you to buy their reusable cups. Hell even the theater and macayos give out "souvenir cups" for cheaper refills
💜
Starbucks charges you to get your own reusable cup plus charges you to use the same cup multiple times plus additional charges, too
Idk about coffee but have you tried drinking water out of a clay cup ? Its refreshing and earthy.
What would be better is only serving customers who bring their own reusable cup.

You can print it, but then you have to fire it. Heat takes energy. Energy makes pollution.
I know we've been using clay pots for millennia, but how safe is it to accidentally swallow bits and pieces of it?
If people want it to go they can't be sloshing coffee all over their car. It doesn't stay hot as long in that, and who is testing the disposable ceramic for heavy metals? Can fired clay cups really be broken down ?
That's pretty innovative. But is it cost effective, especially for small cafes just opening their doors? It's also worth noting that this experiment could not have happened without the liberty to explore new possibilities. The state could have easily banned this owner from implementing his new idea, for no other reason than because they didn't think of it first. As they have done before, multiple times, depriving ALL of America of some ingenious new solutions.

thought that cup founder would be indian as he used clay !!
yea its a cool idea but that isnt the main cup their giving to people when they order coffee. they said its an option which means they probably charging extra for that cup which makes it a bad idea now. if im use to getting the same cup of coffee for 4 bucks and now u telling me i gotta pay an additional 2 bucks just for a different cup,why would i do that? and lets not kid ourselves, this isnt a game changer or anything and its not gonna start any change. the only thing that could happen from this is other companies will use this as a way to make more money off people and pretend its all about them caring about the environment
There’s been going on for so long Mexico has it. They’re the one who created him for their alcohol. Look it up.
The so called founder of such cups brings the idea from his home nation where we used these kind of cups made of clay most of the time
