  • Hey everyone!
I've long been admiring those amazing aroid and jewel orchid terrariums / vivariums on Instagram and finally figured out a way for me to dabble myself. This way of doing things is super cheap compared to buying a 'proper' terrarium, so I wanted to share how I did it.
All in all I think I probably spent around £56 on the actual terrarium setup, excluding the plants - that works out as follows:
Second hand Fish tank - £20
Hydroleca / LECA- £4 ish as it was half a bag
    Charcoal - Around £1 - a quarter of a £4 bag
Substrate - probably less than £5 collectively as I already had these substrate materials lying around and each was a small portion of a much larger bag.
    Mesh - £3.99 from Amazon
Bogwood - £8 Pets at Home
    Clip lamp - £12.99 Amazon
    Lightbulb - £1 Amazon
Writing that down makes me realise how bad my plant obsession has become, given that £56 is actually not THAT cheap... but cheap compared to doing it with the designated, branded materials!! (wow!)
I've worked super hard on this video so any feedback on it would be really appreciated. It's a bit of a long one, so grab a cuppa and a snack, or check out the timestamps below!
    TIMESTAMPS:
    08:57 - Drainage layer
    12:24 - Substrate
    14:56 - Substrate composition screenshot
15:43 - Plants to go into the terrarium
    30:52 - Finished product
    32:43 - Terrarium tour
    38:00 - 3 week update
If you do end up creating your own Fishtank terrarium/vivarium, please do let me know and send me pics if possible through Instagram!
Thanks so much for watching, as always.

I went through this same process of wanting a larger terrarium for plants to be able to grow more and seeing how ridiculously priced they are. Thank you for the inspiration to do it this way!

Loved this, I think I’m going to be on the lookout for a cheap fish tank now.. you made this look very easy to do and I guess it’s up to everyone how much they spend on their plants..
Btw, I love the hair colour..
    thank you for this 👍

Beautiful terrarium! I'm getting ready to build a begonia terrarium but it's great to see I can have all sorts of variety. I've seen lots of people using springtails in big terrariums such as these as well. I'd love to hear an update after a year! Again, thank you for the video ☺️

I never have a drainage layer, never any rot. I guess I water just right then. I think it's because my mix is good. I do add lava rock to my mix too and it is very airy.

This is spectacular. I love it so much. You did a fabulous job. I can't bear to look at my terrarium now. 😂 I can't decide which is my favourite, there are so many. Possibly the Dragon Scale.

Maybe you could add a paphiopedilum or two o:? Could even place a branch piece and put airplants on and stuff. Excited to see how it evolves🌱💚.

This is so beautiful and informative, thank you very much for the video. I’m planning to do my own with my old aquarium. But I have very little experience with terrarium. Your video is very helpful. Do you think without the lid, the humidity is okay? And my spray the water, will it be an concern the leaves got wet? Thank you and hope to get further update and more tips!

    • @emma.greenwood
      @emma.greenwood  3 года назад +1

Thank you so much! 🥰🥰 Honestly the humidity is pretty high for mine even without the lid, although it's probably a good idea to get a hygrometer to keep an eye on it. I wouldn't worry too much about water on the leaves as long as you have some form of airflow through it. Good luck!! ❤️

I love your plant selection. The jewel orchids are a wonderful idea. I will be adding them to my creation. More rocks and driftwood would be great. Get a bit more organized with your plant names before you role your video. Otherwise, a bit quicker with your talking and not repeating items. An aquarium light fixture on top would let you place the terrarium anywhere in your house. Nice inspiration!

Did you get your Mantis yet???? They are prolific here in the Ozarks of Oklahoma. So I finally researched them as I have only lived here for 3 years and just getting used to all the different insects here. There are a LOT of new to me things!!!! Mantis it turns out are kept as pets, with a life span of 2 years! Who KNEW :D Great vid!! We are turning out 75gl tank into one of these. I started on a video where a guy did a mini waterfall in a huge jar.... again, WHO KNEW :D so that is our winter project for 2021. We garden. We love water features outside. At least in this area, you can run them all winter. Minnesota, not a good idea. Jotting down plants now.... THANKS for taking the time!!!

Love the pilea. My daughter wanted to buy one last time we went plant shopping and I said no as I didn’t know what it was or how to care for it. Next time we go, I’m going to buy one!!

Thanks so much Megan! They are really easy care - I have one in an open terrarium that's just sort of coasted by on virtually no care for about a year and still going!! Good luck! 😊🤞🏻

Thanks for this. I''m about to convert my 50 gallon aquarium to a terrarium, and I'm a little worried about the look! It's nice to see how you planned this out. Thanks. How is it looking now?

Oh exciting!! It'll look brilliant - even if it starts out looking a bit odd it'll settle into looking really lovely!
Thank you - it still looks nice but it's suffering the effects of the cold weather I think. Plenty of drying leaves 😂❄️ bring on summer!!

Whole point of terrarium is creating and eco system with the close lid. You used it as a pot. Just go to the point, you repeated same things over and over. EDITING is required I had to fast forward the first 20 min!
