Vinh Huỳnh as a happy one x owner, I've been genuinely surprised to see how many games are getting full 4k releases. All the talk before launch was that it didn't have enough power, yet here we are with some of the best looking games this gen running full 4k. You have to appreciate the opportunity for optimization that console provides over pc.
Xbox One X still impresses me by console standards. I would be happy with owning an X. However, if you have the budget to build a gaming PC then that's usually the best way to go if graphics, performance and savings is your thing. PC games go on sale daily.
I’m not biased to either side, I am blessed to have a good PC and a PS4 which I think is the best combo because I can play all of the story exclusives from PlayStation and now I can play almost every Xbox exclusive on PC along with all of my PC exclusives.
Chris Newton I also have a PS4 Pro, but the X1X is unlike any console I have seen, especially when you throw in it can play OG Xbox and 360 games enhanced, just amazing what MS did with the console. It may not be PC but for us console only gamers it is good enough.

Don't have a 4k TV and don't need it at the moment. 1080p at ultra with a steady 60fps is all I want. Don't care about the resolution, I need stability, and the Pro is enough. Plus it has some amazing games. Not to even mention how much I am absolutely loving my PSVR.

Xbox Game Pass, true backward compatibility, superior 4K support in more games in comparison to its competition. As someone that owns and enjoys a PS4 Pro, there’s a lot of nice incentives for owning an Xbox One, no doubt. Especially if one has enough money to purchase an Xbox One X.

Back compatibility, Cross play, made a controller meant for disabled people, etc. That's just stuff from the top of my head and there's no way you can complain about this since it helps us

How about that awesome HDR! Honestly with HDR on consoles it makes games darker and vivid with a wider color spectrum that makes all low settings like shadows and AO go away.
This game was already fine. The dynamic resolution meant you got 1080p with a locked 60 fps. Now it's sharper but the frame rate isn't as stable. BF4 is the game that really needs to be enhanced, it runs at 720p on an X1X and it looks horrible.
Could not disagree more with the conclusion. Aside from the water, the difference between core graphics of console vs PC is not big. However, utilizing the GPU fully for a resolution boost is an all-encompassing upgrade that applies to everything, not just certain little details. And actually getting close to hitting 4k makes a big difference compared to more middling resolutions which only provide minor image quality boosts. I think a '1080p/Ultra mode' would have been nice for you guys at Digital Foundry who obsess over the finest little details, but would offer much less for the general enthusiast. At the end of the day, we've got BF1, one of the best looking games available, running at near enough 4k at near enough 60fps on a damn console. You'd really have to be nitpicky to say it's not impressive.

How tf do these consoles run this game at this fps. I'm on a 1050ti 4gb and i5 7300hq laptop and my fps barely goes above 50 at whatever resolution i play at be it 2k or 720p. My cpu is always at 100%.I have tried everything but its always at 100%. From what ik the console cpu's are way way underpowered. Then wtf is going on? How do people claim that "OH my 300-400$ pc runs it at ultra 60". I call bs.
Make sure your CPU isn't overheating, no background processes use your resources, you have at least 8GB of RAM... Probably heat and background processes in this case though. Make sure that the 1050ti and not your power saving GPU is used, set windows to high performance mode(!) and turn some cpu intensive game settings down. AND DONT EXPECT MUCH PERFORMANCE ON BATTERY, PLUG IT IN Remember: Laptop components are not as powerful as desktops and whenever someone tells you about their $500 pc they dont include peripherals in that price. *edit: If the problem is mostly heat related, look into undervolting your CPU. There are slight variances in how processors perform at a given voltage, so the manufacturer just chooses a safe voltage to make the most profit. Therefore there's often room for improvement. Lower voltage means less power usage and therefore lower temperatures thus reducing thermal throttling. -> moar FPS. Some graphics settings you may want to disable: Anti-Aliasing, VSync

That party bug is quite annoying. Hopefully a patch of the X patch will resolve it. Seeing framerates and frametimes on the unpatched version would have been helpful to see if its an issue with the party system (MS fault) or on EA's end.
The Xbox party issue is certainly a strange bug that I hope gets resolved. I don't get to play BF1 with friends so for me the patch is everything I wanted. The X keeps delivering :)

90% on each axis of a 2160p image is 1944p. It's easy to calculate. Also giving the percentage is better since that gives a better judgement of how close the image is to it's native target rather than an arbitrary number.

If you reduce it by 10% on *both* sides you are reducing it by more than 10%. 3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels If you reduce both sides by 10% you get 3456x1944 = 6,718,464 pixels That's 81 percent. When they say 1800p is 83% they are wrong about that as well. 3200x1800 = 5,760,000 pixels = 69% 4K
Anyway, my point is that it's *not* a good way of judging how close it is to the native target. It's very deceptive. It makes it look closer than it actually is. Yes they do specify it's each side separately (in this case) so they aren't "wrong" but they are misleading people.
yeah, everyone knows how a dual axis works. both of you are correct still. 90% on each axis is relevant since upscaling is done from corner to corner, even if per-pixel is more accurate data.
I love digital foundry but i don't know what you people are expecting, Microsoft said before x launch that the main purpose of the console is to make 900p and 1080p Xbox one games able to run on 4K and get more stable frame rate, not to magically make all games have PC ultra settings .

I think a good addition to these videos covering games with dynamic resolutions would be some sort of graphic explaining the difference in resolution, and compared to a full 4K image, as sometimes it can be hard to fully understand the difference between 2304x1296 and 3456x1944 (while of course the latter is larger)

I'm starting to realized. Ultra settings at the cost of 4K is actually better. i rather have QHD upscaled with Ultra settings on console. I believe next gen both sides will fully realize that, and go with that. Or at least allow us to choose.
Finally! I've been eagerly waiting for an Xbox One X Enhanced update for Battlefield 1 since Xbox One X's launch. Well, better late than never. :D It's upsetting to hear about the Xbox Live Party/VoIP frame rate issue, though. That's a serious problem that needs to be addressed ASAP. Hopefully it'll be resolved soon. What about Xbox One X Enhanced updates for Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, Star Wars: Battlefront and Mirror's Edge Catalyst? I'm still hoping these games will get it, too. That'd be fantastic. Same goes for Battlefield 3, Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 1943 via Xbox One Backward Compatibility.
I don't care for xbox anymore since they released all thier games on pc (not much anyway lol) i still think the ps4 pro is a better choice for the exclusives. I still think the pro games look amazing on a good 4k set even if they are running at 1800p, 1400p, checkerboard etc. the third party games look better on the x but the exclusives graphics are better than anything the X has to offer
Darzo I own a Pro and I can honestly say that I only turn it on to play the few exclusive games I'm interested in. Even then I rent the games. Unless it's horizon zero Dawn or the show. I bought those.
I'm really glad that you talked about the Xbox party issues but there are more issues with the x version that isn't anything to do with performance but visual bugs within the engine, such as in certain indoor areas like ballroom blitz and amiens to name a couple where everything gets desaturated and nearly black and white. I think it has something to do with the newly added HDR support because, of my knowledge, the normal Xbox one does not have this problem. Specific places to look, E flag on amiens, C flag and throughout the building of ballroom blitz, and possibly more maps most likely. I know this is a performance analysis channel but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
To compare a $500 console to an $800 graphics card is not a fair comparison, at all. I bet the CPU was probably an 8th-gen i9 with 32 GB ram running on an SSD. Sure, PC snobs will snicker but the truth is; over 95% of them don't even own a regular 1080, much less a TI. I own a PC with a 1060 and a 144Hz monitor and I still prefer to play on my Xbox One X with my stunning 55" 4K HDR 10 TV. Truthfully, I think they improved the over-all sound too. You should look into that,
Is the 'Xbox Party' issue a DICE/BF issue or an MS/Xbox issue? Is this a test DF run as part of every analysis? Would be interesting to know if this impact has been seen before on any other titles...
This is one of the few games that actually comes close to living up to that promise - a lot of the time the gameplay's at 4k/60fps, or at least very close to it. It's only the multiplayer letting things down at the minute.

A gaming PC at minimum costs 1700$, an Xbox One X cost 500$, the differences are not large, as he said in the video himself that the Xbox had more ram. Therefore I concluded that if we just politely complain to DICE and Microsoft we could be seeing the same graphics on both platforms (I know it looks like I'm just praising Xbox here. But the truth is I was originally going to switch to a PS4. Only thing stopping me was my love for Forza Horizon 4)

There is a rumor that's says only 5% of those who actually own an xbox one x are using 4k Hdr TVs. People are actually still using their 1080p tvs and downsapling the signal from 4k. That blows my mind...
scorpio 4k. Yeah both myself & my friend who bought the scorpio editions both play on 4k displays. I also use a qhd monitor & have used it on a fhd panel just to see the downsampling; vastly superior image regardless. It's brilliant for any application.
1060 has consistently outperformed the Xbox X in many games, doubt it would play as well as the 1080ti ofc, but stil would either beat, or at the very least equal the Xbox X.

i don't claim to be as trained in analysing games but I have far cry 5 and Assassin's Creed origins on both the Pro and One X. The visual difference is very noticeable with Xbox One X looking better as is the case with all multi-plats titles it seems

This game was already fine. The dynamic resolution meant you got 1080p with a locked 60 fps. Now it's sharper but the frame rate isn't as stable. BF4 is the game that really needs to be enhanced, it runs at 720p on an X1X and it looks horrible.

Could not disagree more with the conclusion. Aside from the water, the difference between core graphics of console vs PC is not big. However, utilizing the GPU fully for a resolution boost is an all-encompassing upgrade that applies to everything, not just certain little details. And actually getting close to hitting 4k makes a big difference compared to more middling resolutions which only provide minor image quality boosts. I think a '1080p/Ultra mode' would have been nice for you guys at Digital Foundry who obsess over the finest little details, but would offer much less for the general enthusiast. At the end of the day, we've got BF1, one of the best looking games available, running at near enough 4k at near enough 60fps on a damn console. You'd really have to be nitpicky to say it's not impressive.

How tf do these consoles run this game at this fps. I'm on a 1050ti 4gb and i5 7300hq laptop and my fps barely goes above 50 at whatever resolution i play at be it 2k or 720p. My cpu is always at 100%.I have tried everything but its always at 100%. From what ik the console cpu's are way way underpowered. Then wtf is going on? How do people claim that "OH my 300-400$ pc runs it at ultra 60".

Make sure your CPU isn't overheating, no background processes use your resources, you have at least 8GB of RAM...
Probably heat and background processes in this case though.
Make sure that the 1050ti and not your power saving GPU is used, set windows to high performance mode(!) and turn some cpu intensive game settings down. AND DONT EXPECT MUCH PERFORMANCE ON BATTERY, PLUG IT IN
Remember: Laptop components are not as powerful as desktops and whenever someone tells you about their $500 pc they dont include peripherals in that price.
*edit: If the problem is mostly heat related, look into undervolting your CPU. There are slight variances in how processors perform at a given voltage, so the manufacturer just chooses a safe voltage to make the most profit. Therefore there's often room for improvement. Lower voltage means less power usage and therefore lower temperatures thus reducing thermal throttling. -> moar FPS.
Some graphics settings you may want to disable: Anti-Aliasing, VSync

That party bug is quite annoying. Hopefully a patch of the X patch will resolve it.
Seeing framerates and frametimes on the unpatched version would have been helpful to see if its an issue with the party system (MS fault) or on EA's end.
The Xbox party issue is certainly a strange bug that I hope gets resolved. I don't get to play BF1 with friends so for me the patch is everything I wanted. The X keeps delivering :)

90% on each axis of a 2160p image is 1944p. It's easy to calculate. Also giving the percentage is better since that gives a better judgement of how close the image is to it's native target rather than an arbitrary number.

If you reduce both sides by 10% you get
3456x1944 = 6,718,464 pixels
That's 81 percent.
When they say 1800p is 83% they are wrong about that as well.
3200x1800 = 5,760,000 pixels = 69% 4K
Anyway, my point is that it's *not* a good way of judging how close it is to the native target. It's very deceptive. It makes it look closer than it actually is.

I think a good addition to these videos covering games with dynamic resolutions would be some sort of graphic explaining the difference in resolution, and compared to a full 4K image, as sometimes it can be hard to fully understand the difference between 2304x1296 and 3456x1944 (while of course the latter is larger)

I'm starting to realized. Ultra settings at the cost of 4K is actually better. i rather have QHD upscaled with Ultra settings on console. I believe next gen both sides will fully realize that, and go with that. Or at least allow us to choose.

I'm really glad that you talked about the Xbox party issues but there are more issues with the x version that isn't anything to do with performance but visual bugs within the engine, such as in certain indoor areas like ballroom blitz and amiens to name a couple where everything gets desaturated and nearly black and white. I think it has something to do with the newly added HDR support because, of my knowledge, the normal Xbox one does not have this problem. Specific places to look, E flag on amiens, C flag and throughout the building of ballroom blitz, and possibly more maps most likely. I know this is a performance analysis channel but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
To compare a $500 console to an $800 graphics card is not a fair comparison, at all. I bet the CPU was probably an 8th-gen i9 with 32 GB ram running on an SSD. Sure, PC snobs will snicker but the truth is; over 95% of them don't even own a regular 1080, much less a TI. I own a PC with a 1060 and a 144Hz monitor and I still prefer to play on my Xbox One X with my stunning 55" 4K HDR 10 TV. Truthfully, I think they improved the over-all sound too. You should look into that,

This is one of the few games that actually comes close to living up to that promise - a lot of the time the gameplay's at 4k/60fps, or at least very close to it. It's only the multiplayer letting things down at the minute.

A gaming PC at minimum costs 1700$, an Xbox One X cost 500$, the differences are not large, as he said in the video himself that the Xbox had more ram. Therefore I concluded that if we just politely complain to DICE and Microsoft we could be seeing the same graphics on both platforms

scorpio 4k. Yeah both myself & my friend who bought the scorpio editions both play on 4k displays. I also use a qhd monitor & have used it on a fhd panel just to see the downsampling; vastly superior image regardless. It's brilliant for any application.
