- Fence Video: • DIY Privacy Fence | Ho...
This DIY project was the last step in the 2 year renovation on my side yard. I share the progress that I have made over the past 2 years. Trees were cut down, stumps removed, french drain installed, fence extended ( • DIY Privacy Fence | Ho... ) and now the landscaping is completed.
In this video I share how to create privacy using landscaping. Using Emerald Green Arborvitae, tall grasses, hostas, rock, and mulch I complete my landscaping makeover. I really believe this is a project that most people can do it yourself.
I used the Emerald Green Arborvitae because it does not grow to be as large as other types like the Green Giant. These trees should only reach a max height of around 12 to 15 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. The way that I have planted them they should never touch but will add a lot of privacy. Then the tall grasses were planted in the open areas and will also help provide privacy. They will grow to around 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. I then used large boulders to break up the hill and add texture and different colors. Some rocks I dug into the hill and others were placed on the surface. Other plants include hostas and a smaller juniper.
Overall I am very pleased with the results. I believe in the next few years this area will continue to develop and look even better. I’m also curious what you think, leave it in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Could you tell me which nursery did you buy please
did you forget the rental of mini excavator? ;) just kidding Thanks for the video.
I watched this video when you posted it and I think a lot of people would like an update
I love it, evergreen is my life❤
I'm at the age where I binge watch lawn and lawnscape videos.
I’m at the age where I watch yet get it done … and like me I like the Hans Solo execution… get it done
We need a 2 year update on the Arborvitaes!
Looks great, but don't be afraid to plant something that flowers besides the hostas. There's lots of greenery and rocks in the world. Add the color. Thanks again for the video
It came out very nice at the end. You must be a landscaper by trade. Your wife must be very happy and proud.😊
I like the way you made the rocks seem like they were natural. Very innovative!
Thanks I appreciate it!
Really great job done there. Looks very good. You definitely need to revisit this each year so we can see how it's getting on with time. Hi from Ireland!
Thanks for watching and cool to hear from so far away! I hope to create update videos on all my projects, I really think that is something not enough people do. Thanks!
@@ThatTechTeacher427 update soon please!
@ThatTechTeacher427 any update?
Love your videos....The teacher in you comes out in each one of them.
Thanks!
Looks really nice
Wifey is lucky. Good job😊
Looks fantastic! I’d love to see an update to see how the plants are filling in. Thanks for sharing!
These videos just keep getting better!
Thanks for watching as always!
Absolutely beautiful! Simplicity is best. The rocks are the hardest part. Yes, they are crazy heavy. I pulled my back couple of times just moving them in my yard.
Looks fantastic! Love how you staggered your plantings.
The result is very beautiful. I specially loved the staggering of the arborvitaes. That was a genius idea to break up the usual uniformity of privacy screens :) Thank you for sharing
I loved how you did your project. Thanks for the tip about the Arborvitae.
This guy does not miss! Except video as always. One of my favorite low maintenance plants when landscaping is a Japanese maple tree. It doesn’t get too tall and covers a decent area. May look good on the end of the bed. It adds some color to the bed. Or add a greenside sand trap to compliment your golf course level front yard. Something to consider
Thanks! I also love the Japanese Maple, the one on the corner of my house is my favorite tree in the yard. Not sure the wife will understand the sand trap... lol
Lives on an expressway. Nice for the children.
Nice job!! You were completely successful with the strategy used with the rocks. I wouldn’t do anything differently. You nailed it.
I never get tired of watching this video. Well done with your landscape design! A few months ago we bought 3 baby Emerald Green Arborvitae 'Smaragd' (about 2 ft tall) from Home Depot for $5.50 each when they were on sale and put them in the back yard. Then a friend showed us her Emerald Green has been eaten by deer which makes it lopsided from the ground ... I didn't know deer love to eat Emerald Green so I read up on it and someone said to grow maiden grass around the Emerald trees, deer don't like maiden grass. We haven't got the maiden grass yet but we have mint growing near the Emerald trees so the deer haven't come around but I am going to get a few maiden grass plants before the winter gets here. Thanks for this video!
yikes! We have a lot of deer in our yard! I didn't know they liked arbor vitae and I was getting ready to plant some. Will plant maiden grass. Thanks for sharing this information.
Nice job! I love that you didn’t make it so crowded is just very clean and elegant look !!!
I was exhausted just watching you do all this work 😆
Wow, looks great.
I can watch this type of video non-stop. 🙂❤️👍
Wow, what a project! You work hard!
Wow. You’d think those rocks had been there a hundred years the way their layed out. Awesome!
Thanks!
Outstanding work! looks terrific!
Looks great, awesome video.
Thanks for sharing this, your fencing and plant selections for privacy, my husband is in process of putting up fence, we’ll be getting some of those arborvitae as well.
Great job! Nice design. Looks like a lot of work!
Great job!!!👍🏼👍🏼
Great job!
Looking good 👍
Looks great
It looks great! I learned about the emerald green arborvitae that doesn't get too tall. Wow! You have a lot of energy to do all that work yourself!
I am still youngish and motivated I guess. Ya I like the green gaints as well but they get huge, not ideal for this area.
Great video. I'm doing a very similar project. Liked the camera angles, instructions, and lack of filler talk.
Love this.
Saved to Favorites, love the layout and ideas behind it - looks absolutely beautiful! Edit: also new sub!
Looks very nice!
Would love to see an update, when everything starts growing!
Great job!Looks nice👍
they look fantastic......good job!!!!!
Thanks! I'm really looking forward to what they will look like in a few years
You make this look so easy, but very impressive with the vision. I would like to see it a year later.
Good job, I'd love to see it in a few years
Awesome video!! Really like the way you placed the trees and rocks breaking up the uniformity! It looks very natural! Thanks for the inspiration! Subscribing now!
Dam you are no joke with the landscaping! Great work!
Thanks 👍, I appreciate it!
Looks Great!😊👍🏼
Likely I won't do the same thing as this. But it really gave me a good idea. Good to know you were able to get so many trees in the back of the Jeep. I don't own a truck and have a 4 door so this was helpful.
Very nice
Truly admire all your hard work. Please make an update video!!! Thanks!
Wow buddy, that looks amazing!
Thanks I appreciate it!
Really good stuff.
Great ideas and execution, looks really good!Petrified wood logs would look great on the inside section, just an idea!
I like the look of this a lot.
Thanks? Should get better with time
Well for me it's perfect.....maybe a little bit more of playing with green tones but it's amazing anyway!
Looks, good man I'd like to do something like that to my yard Thank's for sharing
Thanks I appreciate and I hope your project goes well!
thanks for sharing!
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
Love the landscaping! I also spy a C6Z in the garage! As a fellow corvette owner I approve.
Right on, a vette person is a good person to me! Thanks!
Nice time-lapse... yardwork, digging holes is a lot of hard work. I planted 3-feet arborvitaes, but could only dig a hole just slightly larger than the pot it came in.. hopefully it is good enough and will survive.. only time will tell...
Really nice great effort to get the look you wanted the only thing I believe it’s better to take the burlap off of the roots of your emerald greens
Definitely should have removed the burlap, I’ve planted thousands of trees and the burlap is a huge hindrance to the roots!
Wow very nice 😎
Thanks!
I think it looks great and gives me ideas for what I can do between my side yard snd neighbors for just a bit of softening and screening after we finish taking out some huge and overgrown evergreens. My only thought is you could add a little color in a few spots with some annuals in the spring. Like impatiens or something.
Thanks and glad it helps in some way. Yes color is needed!
I had no idea you could plant the arborvite above soil level like that... I'm getting ready to plant a few this fall and will do the same thing. Also, loved how you arranged rocks. I'm a big rock fan! Thanks for sharing.
Only in clay soil, not in Sandy soil
I really like your sense of balance and aesthetic. I’ve done similar projects at my house, and my only regret is that I did not use a weed barrier/landscape cloth, and now I have a boatload of weeding that I need to do annually. I suppose it depends on your location… I am in eastern Pennsylvania and thistle is my enemy. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and seeing your property develop. Well done!
Thanks I really appreciate it! I have had good luck with only much. Weed barriers under mulch dont make a ton of sense to me only because all the mulch breaks down over time and will create a layer of dirt on top of your barrier. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ThatTechTeacher427 I hear you on mulch over landscape cloth, but for me it’s the best option. The irony of it is that I think the thistle seed may have come in the mulch. Now I am basically stuck in a loop where I am addicted to putting down new mulch every year. Well played Mulch Industry, well played!
Update please! Would love to see how it looks now that it's about a year later. I'm also wondering how the hostas fared since I believe they prefer shade areas
The rocks are cool. Good job. There is a dwarf version of the thuja green giant. That’s what I went with. It’s called baby thuja.
On inside i would add color. Something yellow, res, purple, etc.
Good job
That was a satisfying video to watch! Lol
Thanks!
That is a lot of work. Looks great. Ok, I’m tired now.
You and me both! Thanks!
Well worth the effort! It looks great
I should have read your comments but great job
It looks natural it don't look crowded so his perfect is beautiful man
Thanks, I think it will fill in a bit over the next few years and then I think it will at its best.
Its very beautiful i would like to see some colored shrubs or do some flower 🤔
Great project and wonderfully explained. One caution is that if I saw this correctly, it looked like he planted the arborvitaes with the burlap and rope still intact(?). If so, that needs to be fully removed before planting! If they are left on, the root balls are constrained and the plants could die.
Agreed, and break up the outside roots to promote them to spread. Also, hostas need shade, hopefully they're on the northside of the arbs.
Do you think burlap is made of plastic or something?? Do you really think a nursery would sell them in burlap, without mentioning it is to be removed? You CAN and SHOULD leave the burlap
I wish my husband was as dedicated as you 😭
Looks great! I thought some black eyed Susan plants here and there could add some good pollinator plants and pretty color!
Thanks for the idea I will think about that for next year.
Can we get a one year update picture of this project? Very nice work!
Orange rocket barberry would look nice on the side of the arbs that faces the house. They have narrow and upright growth and oustanding brilliant color.
Great idea! I will be looking into that.
I’d love to see an update
As a professional garden designer. It’s sacrilegious that you won’t dig from your knees. I always tell my guys “if your knees aren’t dirty, you’re doing it wrong”. Love the ground, love the suck. It’s not supposed to be easy
Did you dig all the holes and plant the trees ALL in one day? You must have crazy energy and stamina! Did enjoy your video!
Superman got nothing on you! Good job. 👍
Thanks I appreciate that! lol
Generally Hostas are shade plants. Did yours survive the full sun?
Have you shown an update of this? Would love to see that. Thank you.
New to your channel. Would like to know your planting zone please. Liked the staggered placement of evergreens.
Did you take the burlap wrap off before planting them?
Wow, looks fantastic - all of your hard work has really paid off!! QUESTION: We’re planting a row of 8 large trees for privacy for new construction next door - 3 crapes and 5 cryptomeria “radicans” - for the most part they look great but a couple days after planting I’m noticing a couple of trees very slightly leaning - do you think their upward growth will correct the leaning naturally or is it best to correct now - not sure if I’m being OCD 🤷♂️
You need to anchor trees when you plant them. Very small trees you can get away with. But even the conifers he plants here, I would have anchored. The rootball isn't secure, the tree needs to me motionles to let the roots develop
Curious to know how they are doing in that clay.
How did one guy take down all those big trees? Did you have a bucket truck and what happed to all the waste?
Interested to know how your hostas did in full sun. Thought they were shade plants.
They have done surprisingly well. One in the hottest part of the summer did I see some of the larger leaves near the miltch start to brown but they came back in the fall.
Question why didn't tou remove the wire and wrapping from root ball?
Interesting you did not cut open the burlap around to roots. Was that per the instruction of the nursery?
Was wondering the same thing.
Sorry the dirt was the same exact color as the burlap I did remove the burlap before putting in the hole.
I'm a flower girl.. possibly do some bulbs specially in the spring. Also you could do flowers in bunches in the summer.. colors just wake an area up. I do a tropical theme each year and this year my cookie is purple madness with a slash of red. I get tons of compliments and it's just nice to see colors. Keep in mind my area is not as big as yours.
Btw i use Jonathan Greene Ultra Beauty seed absolutely love it and barely any weed and tenacity for weeds..
Are you going to stain the fence?
Thanks for the advice, I do need some color and I will be looking into those. Yes staining the fence should be later this fall or early next spring.
Omg, why did you not remove the burlap from around the roots?
Hi. I read that you arr suppose to remove the burlap from the trees because the roots could choke.
That is false. And good luck planting the rootbal after removing the burlap...
What type of hosta it is? I'm trying to find a hosta that can handle sun.
How are those hostas doing in full sun?
Did you remove the burlap from the root ball before planting? Looks like you left them on…like the design and all the work you did. I’m curious to see how they will in the space as time passes
why would you need to remove the burlap?
Treated burlap or synthetic burlap which you are most likely to encounter will no decay quickly, and while some roots can get through the burlap, it stunts the growth and can kill your shrub/tree. It’s always recommended to remove the burlap.
Did you plant the arborvitae with the burlap still wrapped around the root ball? Not to be "that guy", but I just watched a video where the landscaper had to dig out an entire row of them that hadn't grown in years after planting because according to him the burlap wrap was smothering the roots.I know many will say the burlap will eventually deteriorate, but ask 10 experts the same question and you'll get 10 different answers :)
maybe a pop of color purples/oranges would be a good back filler
Can you share a 1 year update please? 🙏
All those tree's where dead? Why, some sort of infection?
