I am so impressed with this designer ( I’m also a designer). Her plant knowledge is fantastic and her passion for plants is apparent! So often on RUclips self proclaimed landscape designers focus on making money. Hope I am able to find more of her work on RUclips.
what a yard, I resonate with this sanctuary vision, when you love the alpine environment but can’t go to the mountains than planting a wonderful array of evergreens is the only alternative, thank you so much, definitely rewatching this
This is my favorite designed yard ever! I wish I had this sunlight and protection from deer. More people should have gorgeous sanctuaries like this. Well done!
I appreciate this video showing more mature ages of these plants. Researching for my own yard on combining evergreens to make a screen look more natural, yet not sloppy. Thank you! Horticulturist and private gardener in Michigan.
Beautiful mixture of colors and textures. You have so many species of trees in one space, it’s almost like a botanical garden. I’d love to hear more about the soil you brought in, fertilizing and watering. I’ve never seen trees and shrubs put on that much growth in four years!
Absolutely beautiful landscape job here ! I love it all. It gave me so many great solutions to solve my own privacy issues. Thank you very much for sharing !
This is absolutely stunning! Such a fabulous and sophisticated design! I love this so much ...what a beautiful, low maintenance garden!. Just goes to show what beauty and interest you can achieve in a landscape without the use of flowers. Bravo!
ever since I first saw this a couple months ago I have now done away with wanting a pool at least one covering most of the back yard, I have begun planting and have added 10 trees I had to move some after planting and have spent more time than I want to admit looking at the direction of the limbs and taking that into account.. it’s taken over my brain power but I’m learning a lot and I was watching this one lady commenting about her garden and how it truly is a place where you work out a lot of your thinking 🤔
It is a joy to listen to you speak on these beautiful plants and their characteristics. I find myself yawning and gulping for air during this video and I can't imagine a better compliment. The original "ASMR" for real! Eager to watch all your videos not only for my comfort and mental health but also for the amazing information on city gardening.
Beautiful design. I am a flower lover, but didn’t even miss them in this amazing collection of arborvitaes and evergreens. You are an excellent design artist.
Your plants are gorgeous! I can't believe you think you have a small garden. I think it is gigantic. I can just dream with having a nice garden like that 🥺😞😢
I love the dimension you’ve added to what you described a flat area… very similar to what I’ve been researching to do with my 200+ x60 area… I like that coral bark you have in the center… I’ve been looking for trees that add privacy but still allow some light… love your work!
What were the distances between the trees, for example cryptomerias, and others? Did you intentionally want an overlap between the canopies? Thank you for the answer!
I'll try, but this is from memory, so might not be totally accurate. I drew a design with a plant list, but due to availabilities and other factors at installation time (like me seeing something really cool when scouting for plants), the original list is not very useful as a reference. I'm using botanical names here for accuracy if you want to look something up, with common name in parens where needed. Big background evergreens: Thuja x plicata 'Green Giant' (Green Giant Arborvitae); Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald' (Emerald Arborvitae); Cryptomeria japonica 'Radicans' (usually called Cryptomeria, may be another common name tho); Magnolia grandiflora 'Alta'; Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris'; Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Ogon' (Ogon Dawn Redwood); Ilex x 'Nellie R Stevens' (Nellie R Stevens Holly); Ilex x 'Emily Bruner' (Emily Bruner Holly); Pinus virginiana 'Wate's Golden' (Wate's Golden Virginia Pine) - this is the hindu-pan pruned pine Japanese Maples: 'Sango Kaku' (Coralbark); 'Bihou'; Red Dragon'; 'Shaina' Shrubs/lower conifers: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fernspray Gold' - in the big pot, C. o. 'Gracilis , C. o. 'Nana Lutea' - the little ball shaped guy; C. o. 'Split Rock' (all these are commonly called Hinoki Cypress); Cedrus deodara 'Feelin' Blue' (Dwarf Deodar Cedar); Junipers J. conferta 'Golden Pacific', J. chinensis 'Daub's Frosted'; Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns' (Weeping Serbian Spruce - for some reason I didn't mention this in the video, you can see it to the left of the water feature); Pinus banksiana 'Schoodic' ('Schoodic' Jack Pine); Pinus strobus 'Hillside Winter Gold' (White Pine in the pot); Pinus strobus 'Green Twist' (dwarf White Pine -on the berm); Picea pungens 'Montgomery blue' (Dwarf Blue Spruce - on the berm); Illicium x 'Woodlander's Ruby' (sometimes called Anise Bush - leaves smell like licorice when bruised); Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret' (Bald Cypress); The grass was Miscanthus sinensis 'Rigoletto' (common name for Miscanthus is Maiden Grass) That's most everything. There were a few Aucuba in there I didn't point out, and some seasonal stuff like the Dichondra 'Silver Falls' spilling out of a pot. One thing I noticed I also didn't mention in the video was the vine covering the fence. It's Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty', commonly called Cross Vine. Native, evergreen, blooms like crazy in spring, clings without a trellis. A great plant. Hope that helps! Marty
I need some ideas for a line of cypress trees We just had taken down along a fence line. I don’t ever want trees that tall again. the emerald green arborvitae is very appealing to me. All the different textures and evergreens in this video or spectacular.
Most all of the plants in this yard are Zone 6 hardy and many are Zone 5. The only Z7 one I can think of is the gardenia, and in Nashville you have to pick the right variety of gardenia to hope it will live. Most gardenias are Z8.
Hoping you check these comments still. Absolutely stunning garden space. Very reminiscent of the PNW. Can you share what zone this is and if you have any follow up video of the space?
You're in luck, somehow YT flagged me with a comment about this, which doesn't usually happen. This is zone 7a, in Nashville, TN. Unfortunately this yard was about 90% destroyed by an F3 tornado that directly hit it about 3 years ago. My client was lucky to survive, it ripped the second floor right off her house. Heartbreaking, really. We rescued what plants looked like they could recover (which wasn't many), put them in humongous containers and babied them for a year. They now live at her new place some miles away.
Wow what a beautiful yard and the work you did in planting all these pretty trees!!! How far apart did you plant the emerald green aborvitaes and green giant and what was the size of these two plants when you put them in ground? Enjoyed watching this video! Thank you for sharing!
Emeralds were 5 feet apart on center, and were 12 ft tall at installation. Green Giants were 9 feet apart on center (this is crowded for them, but needed for the desired dense screening), and were 10 ft tall at installation.
How big is that yard? Im looking for privacy as well and is looking for ideas. This video is the best that i have seen so far. I do have a shared fence and so i am patiently collecting information.
There is a fence. It was approved by the homeowner and then installed in her absence, and when she got back she found they'd deviated from the plan and she hated how it turned out. So I was also masking that. You cant see it from the inside of the backyard, but the fence has a dense covering of Bignonia capreolata 'Tangerine Beauty', a wonderful native evergreen perennial vine that covers the fence on the street side and blooms like crazy in the spring.
Zone 7B. We did not discuss the water and fertilizer schedules when we recorded this segment. This particular segment's approach was to focus on a landscape design that fulfilled the goals of the homeowner, rather than maintenance protocol.
Yes, pretty much trashed in the F5 tornado that hit Nashville in March of 2019. The whole second floor of the house was torn off, and a neighbors roof smashed into the backyard. It was heartbreaking. We were able to salvage a few things, which we nursed along for a year in giant containers, and they now reside in that client's new landscape.
that white pine that is in the copper pot...is the pot bottom less?? that seems like quite a large tree to be in that size pot...seems it would be root bound. im wanting to get away from blooming flowers and go more greenery and trees and bushes.
Large background evergreens used were Thuja x plicata 'Green Giant', Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald', Cryptomeria japonica 'Radicans', Magnolia grandiflora 'Alta', Ilex x 'Nellie R Stevens', Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris', and one Pinus virginiana 'Wate's Golden' by the entry gate.
Sorry I didn't see your question sooner! The 'Green Giant' arborvitae and the Cryptomerias were about 10 feet tall. The magnolias and 'Nellie Stevens" hollies were about 10 feet. The 'Emerald' arborvitae were 12 feet. All that material was balled & burlapped; everything else was smaller and in containers, the largest being the 'Wate's Golden' Virginia Pine which was in a roughly 50 gallon container. Most of the container stock was 10 gallons and under.
I have watched this 4 times! Absolute perfection! Could you please name off the large privacy trees along with how many? It broke my heart to read that a tornado hit on this property. I’m so sorry
10 ft tall, balled & burlapped. Green Giants grow REALLY fast, and more than doubled in height in 4 years. The soil is imported and really good, which helps, of course.
It looks that luxe, but it actually cost FAR less, like less than half that. I'm fortunate that I live within striking distance of McMinnville, TN, home of a gazillion wholesale nurseries, and I can obtain large plants at pretty reasonable prices.
Only problem is burglars-they LOVE homes surrounded by large shrubs-nobody sees them, can't hear glass shatter. ☹ Delightful movement, color and texture!
I'd say the coral bark does show up nicely against the radicans cryptomeria but the emerald thuja why not a large pile of shit lol their so UGLY and cheap looking. I'd say the bihou shows up well as well

Who needs blooms when you have this?! Beautiful sanctuary!
Fantastic use of evergreens. Many people don’t realize how much interest can be created with just evergreens. You’re very knowledgeable!
Wow only 4 years old. Great landscaper. Thank you for sharing
I dont know how many times i've watched this one. Love everything about it.
Same here! I'm planning my garden with it as a reference.
That is a yard fit for royalty! Love it. So beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing all of the names of the trees and shrubs!!
Wow! Great privacy. For four years those are big trees.
I appreciate this video showing more mature ages of these plants. Researching for my own yard on combining evergreens to make a screen look more natural, yet not sloppy. Thank you! Horticulturist and private gardener in Michigan.
So many choice varieties, properly selected and placed. They sure grew a lot in only four years!
This was incredibly useful for me to see. I've never seen a "foliage" garden quite like this. Wonderful.
One of the best landscape designs I’ve seen!!!

Good job! I want to do something like that in a small yard south and I want to block sun and neighbors.
I love that you use lesser known Japanese Maples. I have 14 different varieties and now working on adding more conifers! Great video.

Ms DeHart engages us well. Interesting to hear of all the varieties...will never remember them all though...lol
Do you know the designer? Can you help me with reaching out to her. Her work is quite impressive

How long did all that take to create that privacy, what about city property line rules???
Why don't these vids tell zone? Would help in my planning
wow this is only 4 yr old landscape? How large were the trees and shrubs when you started?
I would love an update on this
A tornado took most of this out. I saw it on one of the comment replies

@12:37 Is that a gardenia plant, next to the blue? I'm pretty sure those are toxic to dogs. However, the garden is beautifully designed. Subscribed!
Fortunately her dogs never ate plants! She requested the gardenia for sentimental reasons.

Pretty...but seems like a lot of annual pruning would have to take place.
It did require annual pruning, yes. When you plant stuff that tight you need to stay on top of it. Only pruned once a year, though.
