Very interesting about turning wearing the fronts differently than the rears. I've read a lot about car tires, but this is the first time I'm hearing about that phenomenon.
THANKS! In the "old" days, crossing one set and other just moved frontback was the norm. Then radials and newer cars and front wheel drive came along and I kept hearing you should only rotate front to back. Supposedly as the "direction" was/got set into the tires. Never made sense to me as FWD have strain in both forward and reverse directions, acceleration/driving and braking, whereas rears essentially just roll and are only stressed when braking. I know there are directional tires but correct me if wrong, but don't think most conventional, consumer tires are, so it does make more sense to me to get most overall wear would be the cross one set and move others on same side. All that make sense? (need to show this to the place I bought my tires in case they give me grief about rotating this way... :) Thanks, RichE San Diego, CA
This is a great video. I have a saying, "tires and batteries". When will they make these things last geez. I'm forever dealing with leaks and shit batteries. I have experienced the feathering numerous times and usually its due to really crappy tires. I have never had this issue with good quality tires. I typically do not rotate the tires because I don't like replacing 4 tires when they are all worn equally. I only replace two, the rear for rear wheel drive. If the alignment is a bit different I think that could screw up the tread on the tire, although I am not sure about that. Ya with the GM Silverado the tires scrap along when doing a full cranked turn. Don't get that with old Mercedes :). Tires last a lot longer on the front.
Great Video! Will be rotating my tires correctly this weekend! I have a PT Cruiser and a 02 Expedition. What do you suggest on rotating those since I saw a couple of options? Thanks
This happened to me on my vehicle, due to my negligence of not doing proper suspension and regular tire rotation. Anyways, I went to get a suspension and asked to get a tire rotation and they said they don't recommend it and wouldn't do it anyway because my front tires were badly worn and my rear tires weren't as bad, so if I had put my front tires in the back, and since they were worn out, I wouldn't have gotten proper gripping while I braked and /or when it rained, my vehicle could have skidded.
This just happened to me I had to replace all 4. Got my suspension checked and it was fine. They said it’s cause my car is fwl. To avoid it you rotate them but they won’t do it now since they will be uneven and also they won’t recommend to only buy two
I bought only two tyres due to economic reasons, and fixed it to the front wheel what do you recommend . My Toyota Vitz 2001 FWD car is vibrating when driving in high speed over 70km/hr .
A tire rotation shouldn't have any effects of pulling to the side. Is there an alignment issue? Are you 100% sure you didn't already have that problem before getting the oil change and tire rotation?
+Ada L Directional tyres are marked on the side, i.e. on the tyre's sidewall. You will see the word "Rotation" or "Direction" written here. Next to it, there is a small arrow which indicates the tyre's forward direction (rolling direction)
I have a 2wd truck I have all terrain tires in the back and light truck tires in front how would rotate those if I'm wanting to keep all terrain in the back
I got a 1yr warranty package from PB for alignment, so I go every 3months and plus they rotate my tires for me. These San Antonio roads are shitty. They say they get grants to fix them, but where?
What if I have to pay $20 every time to get my tires rotated. Is it still economically feasible do do so or is it better to just replace the front ones when they wear out?
For 20$ you can buy a jack stand to do your own tire rotation. Or just use a few bricks instead. Just don’t get underneath the car when using a makeshift “stand”.
Am I missing something or is $20 nothing compared to $1200 tires lol ? And I drive for work up to 5k per month. I’d much rather pay that than replace my tires prematurely.
That was confusing how he put the tires from the front to the back left to right why can't you just put the driver's side Tire in the back and the passenger front tire in the back what is the driver side Tire have to be switched with the passenger side Tire
40 000 miles tires? lol thats a lot. Usually here in eastern europe most people buy used cars.Lets say you buy a used car which is about 15 years old. If you're doing like 5000 km a year and you bought a new tires along with the car after 5 years you're probably gonna throw the car in the trash. Because youve thrown so much money fixing it that its better to just buy a new one. 5 years per 6000 is about 30 000 km. Which is about the lifetime of the car. Ive seen 10 years old tires and there is only slight difference in the wear. So if you're doing low km driving its not even worth it because you gonna throw the car in the trash in couple of years anyway. And the difference in the wear wont be super super crazy and you can still get away with using the tires in the summer. And even if you see that the wear is too much you can just buy new ones. And still the brand new tires you bought when you got the car will last you at least 3-4 years with minimum wear. So unless you are doing a lot of miles and driving a new car this isnt gonna worth doing.

I'm really jealous how much tread is on that tire after 40,000 miles and no tire rotation.
A1 really does make the best videos on RUclips very clear and concise.
So much more helpful watching a video of you explaining it and seeing it rather than reading up about it , thanks alot man!!
So well explained. I never understood all these concepts until you explained.

Do we need to do wheel alignment every time we rotated tyres?
Good info as usual and very well presented.

Would that be similar to any type of small cars as well?

So if the front tires are pretty wasted but the back ones are fine is it still recommended to rotate them ?
This happened to me on my vehicle, due to my negligence of not doing proper suspension and regular tire rotation.

Another tip, make sure to replace all 4 tires. Different diameters can mess up your transmission on new vehicles!
Very interesting......thanks keep up the good works....
I just got a 370Z with offset tires but not directional tread. Can I move left to right and right to left with no problem
Yes
Well explained, thank You
Very good video!
Do I need to get a balance or alignment after rotating my tires?
That's a good question.
No.
I'd say, not if you rotate regularly, but if you wait after a good while, let's say, after 20k miles, I'd say yes.
I bought only two tyres due to economic reasons, and fixed it to the front wheel what do you recommend . My Toyota Vitz 2001 FWD car is vibrating when driving in high speed over 70km/hr .
Doing my rear wheel drive ute today.
Edit: Yep my front tires have worn on the edge and my back in the middle
+Forgotten Knowledge Thanks for the feedback!
good job!
I knew you could obviously rotate a tire to any other position, but I didn't the rotation "method" went by drivetrain. Thanks for the info.

i took it to a place to get my oil change and tire rotation and now my car feels weird when i turn it feels like it pulls to the side. is that normal?

How do you know if their directional or non-directional tires?

If you’ve got a discount tire near you they will rotate them for free even if you didn’t buy them there.
or rotate them yourself lol
For 20$ you can buy a jack stand to do your own tire rotation. Or just use a few bricks instead. Just don’t get underneath the car when using a makeshift “stand”.
@@heatherowen8528 yes and they also check and air up your tires for free.

Interesting. I guess I've been rotating my tires too late. (Was doing it every 10k miles)
Many thanks...

Thx
Great!
Would some bigger roll bars mitigate this problem?

Your list of words is confusing. Consider adding some dots and comma’s.
Man you ever heard about punctuation??? It very useful, helps you convey various thoughts eloquently
Each car has its own optimal method. Consult your owners manual.
I change my oil every 3500-4000 miles
Rotated mine and knocked tracking way out lol
IMO they get noisy after 10k miles....
Not on 4x4

The lifetime of a car is 30.000km? You jump speedbumps with them every day or something? Most cars easily live up to 300.000km
