If you have an indoor cat, never do THIS

  • Many cats live with their owners as indoor cats. Of course, this can work very well. However, if your cat is an indoor one, you should make sure that all of their needs are covered; otherwise, you may have problems with them. Thus, as an indoor cat owner, you should never make the following mistakes.

Oh, you are so right! We don't do that here in the UK, because it's cruel. You're basically amputating the whole toe, and throwing the whole leg out of alignment. Arthritis is guaranteed. 😕

My sister has had some of her cats declawed. One of them had grown up with large dogs and was used to playing with them, so when she got outside and a neighbor had let their dogs run loose she was defenceless resulting in internal injuries that she didn't recover from. Yet my sister got 2 others declawed. I simply taught mine to not claw furniture and to play nice.

For those that may not know, Lilies will kill your cat. It happened to my little tom cat. Wife bought some nice looking lilies, put it on the kitchen table. My little cat must got some on his paws and licked it off. He started throwing up water, wouldn't eat but would drink water all the time, and then throw it up. Within a couple of days he'd lost so much weight. We took him to the vet, but it was too late, we had to put him down. We didn't know lilies could do this. We were devastated. Now you know. They should be on this list.

It's always a good idea to Google information on pet safety. That way you can find out what houseplants are toxic for your pet. I have philodendrons which are not toxic for cats. But they don't bother them much because I provide them with catnip plants.

@@proudcynophile1901 Yes you are right. We should have done our homework on this. We've had cats for 30 years and nothing like this has ever happened before. I guess we've been lucky. It's amazing that such lovely looking plants could be so deadly to cats. I told the vet there should be signs in their clinic to let people know what to look out for. Most of the cat owners we know didn't know about lilies.

When I rescued another cat close to her age, she would hide and not come out for her food anymore. This went on for awhile, after the introductory steps. So I rehomed the one I had rescued and now she comes out, purrs and is socialable again. I think she was always a cat who liked to be the only cat but tolerated the one who passed. Yes we gave each attempt multiple days/weeks and used so many “tried and true” methods to get them to interact in a positive way. My super sweet, social and cuddly Samantha would lay a severe beat down on each and every one when she could catch them or she would trap them into a hiding space just daring them to come out. It's nice to see them relaxed though, they've been sleeping on their backs & in the superman position a few times, for the first time 😊

Another thing that cats really like and need is green grass to eat, everything they eat is dead, dry cat food, wet food but the grass is alive and eating it is like a medicine, it cleans their guts out and because there life in the grass it gives more life or energy to the cats as well. My cats eyes get so big and they can’t wait to eat grass when I bring them grass

About hiding, this is not really true for all cats. My cat got a nice cat tree that he used once, got 2 beautiful caves, used one for a few days and the other one never. He likes to sleep stretched out on a bed with his head on the pillow, and I have to be next to him. I work from home but he still gets anxious if I don't leave the room and come lie down with him. However, he never comes for cuddles.

I enjoyed these tips, and they helped me realize I am doing a good job with my first cat.
I am home all day, so I try and provide as much variety for my cat as possible. My house is littered with toys, balls, cardboard boxes with holes she can jump through, cat tunnels she can run through, a 5 foot tall cat tree right by the window so she can watch birds. I leave all my cabinets and cupboards open so she can climb in, i leave my window blinds open 24\7 (because if i close them, she breaks them by trying to look\climb through them) so she can watch birds. I constantly alter the obstacles and cat toys to keep her interested. She loves to explore.
My house doesn't look nice, due to being designed mainly as a cat jungle gym \ obstacle course....but my kitty is a rescue with anxiety and an indoor cat who needs a lot of stimulation, so I can deal with a cluttered (with toys and boxes) environment.
My closet is the neatest, tidiest room of the house, befause its walk-in and she uses it for a dining room \ restroom. So she doesn't have toys in the closet, and I keep it ultra clean and open.
I'm not a untidy person, and my house is clean, but her toys and obstacle courses are all over the floor space because its important that she has areas to run and jump around in. Exercise and stimulation for her are more important to me.

I trained my cat since she was a kitten of being on lease of my front yard which worked once she grew up without lease training. Best part is how I trained her to come inside the house once twilight comes. She knows her territory of having serious pride of roaming vicinity. She knows dam well of not venturing outside her domain. I couldn't just let her be indoor cat of needing some excitement of her environment to live healthy of her expressing the joy of running around our home. But best part, is how I took out the nocturnal extinct cats all have of getting inside once the dark comes mostly or mainly due to the mass array of coyotes in my neighborhood which we see every night of them looking for our cats.

@@greenarrow219 I got her at 10 weeks. A month of keeping her inside. Harness on after the month of walking her around home outside. Go close to edges of property and jerkback a little when she try to v nature out, than I put 10 or 12 feet lease and tie on spike to let her just hang out outside 10 to 20 minutes. Did this for a month around 5 pm or near sun set to bring her in for the night. No matter how much you want your cat to stay around house, the cat will venture out around the street once you let her on her own. You really have to get cat to respond to their names, this way the cat will run to you when it's near dark. I had to make sure to spend quality time of at least 3 to 4 hrs a day to get cat to take on ya persona. I just got lucky with my cat being smarter than others I had but I'm in my 50s so time is key with your cat time.

Some of the comments on this video are quite misinformed - there’s plenty of reasons why you might have to keep your cat indoors and there are many ways you can make their life enriching, happy and healthy while you do so. My cat has FIV so for his own health he can’t go outside and risk coming into contact with other cats. He’s got lots of things to play with and places to rest, and we make sure to switch up his enrichment a lot. He’s a very happy guy. I work at an animal shelter and many of our cats need to be rehomed indoors for different reasons - medical conditions or disabilities etc. The most important thing of all is that your cat is healthy and happy, whether or not they can go outside 😸

IIRC neutered (female only?) cats live a few years longer on average than non-neutered.
Also one important part of obesity is that it's a major factor in developing osteoarthritis (worn joints etc). Once it develops there's really no fixing it and you can only treat the pain with meds. And if your cat. like mine, has chronic kidney disease it really limits the available treatments even further.
Activating your cat is also a great way to prevent this so it's not _only_ for fun!

    12. Declawing. I don't care if you don't want your cat scratching your furniture. If that bothers you, add scratching surfaces. You solve one problem the easy way, but you create an entire host of problems for your cat.
    1. With their claws gone, they will bite instead of claw you. 75-80% of cat bites become infected.
    2. Defenselessness. A cat's claws are useful for many things cats do. They use those claws for defense, they use them to climb trees, and outdoors, it even helps them with their traction as they run down prey.
    3. Obesity. "Ok, Mr. E, what does my cat not having claws have to do with obesity?" Ok, what are the two things a cat can do to not become obese? Eat well, and EXERCISE! I want you to imagine being a human with no toes. Go run a marathon! What's that, it's too hard to do now. And there you have it. All work and no play makes Jack a dull cat.
    4. Obesity part II. A cat typically uses his or her claws to take down prey. It's what a cat does, and it is so hardwired in their brains, you cannot rewrite it. By making them declawed, you can create issues of food insecurity, especially if there are other cats in the house. The reaction is, they will instead, just camp out at the food dish.
    5. Early onset arthritis. I have a 20 year old cat named Baby. She has arthritis, mostly because she's 20. In all other respects, she has lived a rather privileged life, being surrounded by all her family pet guardians, and she is lazy because she hurts when she walks, can no longer jump on beds, and needs hoisted up on chairs and couches in order to sit on our laps. Imagine your cat having that problem when they are 7. 10-11 at most if the cat is on a proper diet. But that's what happens, because cats walk on their tippy toes. But you cut their tippy toes off, and as a result, you hobbled the poor cat. They will never run like they did, may never play like they did because they have no claws, so what's the use.
    6. Depression. The sum of all things here can make your cat a miserable shell of a cat. They don't whine about it, because they are stoic animals, but that doesn't mean they don't get depression.
And I don't care if you did this in the past, because I have, too... once, and I knew immediately after he came home that I did something awful, and had felt a lot of guilt over it, because I didn't need a vet to explain to me why you don't declaw cats. But at that time, I didn't know their claw was their knuckle. I thought it was more like the nail bed of our fingers and toes, and those can be chemically destroyed and they won't grow back. Ingrain toe nails are treated by that principle. I had no idea that on a cat would remove their knuckle, but I knew when he came home and I'll never ever do it again to any cat unless medically necessary, but I have yet to see a circumstance where that might be true.

Needless to say I never want that to happen again, I try to train my cats to stay inside as much as possible, so should you if you love them... its true a lot of cats will howl whe nkept inside but often these are cats that are used to that.
