Actually you are totally mistaken, sorry, the end is him falling into despair and considering or committing suicide. The Elder race returns at the end and destroys the Tyranny of Priesthood, deposing the Totalitarian dictatorship. The return of the Elder race is even announced clearly;: ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION, WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL!! The Solar Federation is of course, the Autocratic chain of planets governed by the Priests. The elder race has returned to reclaim the planet and depose the theocratic tyranny. Not sure if our hero took his own life before they returned, but it sure sounded like it.. "My spirits are low in the depths of despair,, My lifeblood spills over.." A powerful case AGAINST suicide actually. Oh and by the way, yes, the priests DO smash the guitar, Peart narrates it clearly in the album jacket. It happens right at that sudden change into the "chase scene" as you called it. ( I like your image there actually, it DOES seem like he is running for his life, but right AFTER they smashed his guitar!!)
Yeah, for some reason suicide never registered with me. A few people have pointed that out. And the priests lost in the end to the elder race! That's so much better than what I had pictured all this time! Thanks for the info!
@@GetSidewaysReacts I was always a fiend for reading every word in the album jackets, the gatefold sleeves were just like books back then. I think I memorized all of the lyrics from YES,Tales from Topographic Oceans!! Lol..
I always thought the protagonist kills himself just before the elder races return, although in the animation we see him watching as they return which is confusing
I tend to agree with your interpretation, though I do believe another is equally plausible (and him watching the invasion at the end of the cartoon possibly hints at this, too). In the sleeve notes, our protagonist states: "My last hope is that, with my death, I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last…” Perhaps, in killing himself, he does indeed pass into the dream and 'witnesses' the return of the elders; but only in his afterlife. Just a thought, which might explain that cartoon anomoly.
@@AnthonyKellett That's a bit of a stretch. To escape from reality into a dream, it still would have been better if he had not given up. It's a bit too pro-suicide, I think perhaps showing him staring up at the Elder's return was an afterthought in the cartoon, because the suicide is a disturbing end. But I think when we look deeper, we find that it can be a powerful statement when the protagonist does something we wish he hadn't. He should have hung on and waited, there was hope of their return, the dream even showed him this as well.
The music executives were the elders in the song. This was Rush making their stand against the demands to be more commercial with their music, and not to pursue their own path.
Hey, Ritch... If you meant that the music execs were the Priests... I agree. I believe the elders (elder race) were were the ancient musicians and artists.
It was a wee before my time in HS which started in 82 and the year I got into Rush. But imagine my friend giving me his LP that year when he found out I was getting into them and I take it home and listen to Overture at least ten times before I even continued the rest of the song.
Now, since Rush's retirement and Neil's passing, it brings me to tears every time. 2112, the song that was Rush's last stand against a meddling record company who wanted them to write radio-friendly songs in the vein of Bad Company. Rush responded massively and never looked back! They earned their stripes with grass roots fan support and their own resolute determination and artistry. Great reaction! I recommend checking out their EPIC live performance of the entire song in 1997 here: ruclips.net/video/1sCxCHggxEI/видео.html
What has always blown me away about this song is…this was 1976. ‘76. I don’t actually know but I’m guessing it was written and composed in ‘75 or earlier, and so many pieces of it sound like segments of much more recent material. But this song is now 45 years old. Not only does it surpass so much 21st century material, but so much of what was put out from 75-99. If any song ever produced in history was the total package, this is it, and it’s so powerful in every way.
Comic was done for the 40th Anniversary. I apply some David Lynch logic of why the protagonist kills himself in the song but later emerges from the cave in the comic. This song is a metaphor of their battle with the record label (at the time) that wanted them to do more commercial stuff rather than these epics and gave them one last chance to conform. They said FU, so they were essentially committing professional suicide with the production of this track (and hence the ambiguous ending) ... 40 years later, it's clear they didn't ... they survived and prospered.
Getty Lee, aside from playing epic bass, keyboards and synth, somehow manages to sing two parts in the same song with completely different voices. Amazing!
Great raaction guys!! You got it almost right!! RUSH played the parts of the “elder race” and Neil always thought of the star troopers as the good guys coming in at the end to save the day! They overthrow the priests, bomb the temples and “assume control”! And our protagonist actually commits suicide in the end “my lifeblood spills over”! They get that wrong in the video, too!! So glad you enjoyed it! Be well and God Bless...from Texas!!
Here's the basic story behind 2112. Their management wanted them to do radio friendly songs. This was a protest. They said we're not doing this for you. We're doing it for us. So they made the first half of the record all one song (kinda) Neil Peart (RIP) wrote all of the lyrics to Rush music. We lost our GOAT. He's playing for GOD now. I'm jealous because you have the cool earphones like I had with my old turntable in the day. Now all I have is my little computer speaker. " Listen to my music. Hear what it can do".
I really liked the different reactions you two had - MCA thinking back to when he first heard this and DJ experiencing it for the first time and wondering what's coming next.
Rock opera at it's best. Nope, the main character kills himself, my lifeblood spills over. The elders came back to claim the planet from the evil priests, he kills himself just before the elders come back, irony.
When someone ask me what epitomizes RUSH, I tell them this song and album. From Neil's first album, they had been working to this point. By-Tor, Lamneth, Necromancer, were all the precursors to this song. They found who they were
The part at the end is the Elders coming back to smash the Temples, reclaim and free the planets that have been taken over by the Priests, a bitter sweet ending because the main character had already committed suicide out of despair
Actually watching the "cartoon" version it appears our Guitar hero doesn't commit suicide as he is smiling at the end when the "Elder race" comes back to reclaim and free the planet from the evil Priests. At least that's my interpretation. I like to think afterwards he continued to play his guitar and share it with all who are listening.
Imagine a teenage drummer in the 70's, buying All The World' A Stage cuz the cover looked cool. Hearing 2112 for the first time, Live. Went to see them then. $7.
Geddy Lee runs out of the temple with tears in his eyes. They broke his guitar. I don't think I can carry on, carry on this cold and empty life. Oh NOOO
I would love for you two to comment on and listen to 'The Pass' from Presto. Amazing song that the band lists as one of their most personal and favorite songs.
Always fun to watch you guys, and what a great video to into someone the the masterpiece. Also, the ending phrases: Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: 7 words said 3x = 21 We have assumed control: 4 words said 3x = 12 Last but not least: Google Israeli Space Program Director Dec 2020 - he states that world leaders have been visited by extra-terrestrials and there is a Galactic Federation. Maybe this is why the US now has a Space Force and the Government is finally opening up about unidentified Ariel Phenomenon - UAP. Trump also signed in the COVID Act that all intelligence agencies must release information on UAP/UFOs in 180 days. Full disclosure to the masses is coming soon. Cheers~
The priest ("Father Brown") DOES smash the guitar. The actual album has story notes that are not sung in the song. The cartoon captures these very accurately... all of the "story" that you see that Geddy Lee doesn't sing are actually IN the song, written down in the album, including the introduction paragraphs. Yes, the 2nd verse of "listen to my music and hear what it can do..." comes AFTER the guitar is smashed. It was either a minor oversight by Neil when writing, or the two events were not meant to be literal, chronological order.
As a lifelong Rush fan....not sure I like seeing the graphical illustrations. I prefer how I always imagined it as most do I am certain. The illustrations are great nonetheless. The music speaks for itself!
I interpreted the last part as him committing suicide before the invasion, because he says "my life blood spills over". Unless that was just a metaphor.
The Solar Federation are the "good guys" or the "elder race" who came back and assumed control. But it was too late, the guy with the guitar killed himself.
Actually, the Priests CLAIMED that music destroyed the Elder Race ... it was a part of their propaganda - - At the end, the Elder Race (Rush making their second cameo in the comic as their older selves) return to free the planets of the Solar Federation from the tyranny of the Priests - -
When listening to this for the first time, of course it is best to listen to the studio version. But I also suggest looking at nothing but the lyrics and the album cover. The music really is the key. Seeing a slideshow or video can be distracting oh, and the very first time should be focused. Just saying... Ideally the room should be completely dark.
Ayn Rand was really an anti-communist reactionary, her so -called objectivist philosophy was just a combination of Aristotlean Anthropism with a hint of Nietzsche. But the book 'Anthem', which inspired 2112, was actually pretty good. I tried getting through her other books but it was too excruciating. But she did crank out that one little gem. And I actually loved the fact that Rush occupied that perfect balance of YES with orchestral fury, and Zeppelin's raw explosive power... just what every other 70s rock band 'dreamed' of doing but were too scared to.
