I want to buy an aluminum filter housing. I have not broken my plastic one yet, but all plastic does get brittle over time, so after 10 years I think its time to upgrade it. I use the FRAM Tough Guard filter and living in Canada, I change my oil every 6 months or so when I switch over to my snow and summer tires. The ULTRA is a very good choice of filter, but its over kill for my situation. I don't pre fill my filter, I probably do more damage to the engine starting it up a few times a year at -35C then i ever could by a 2 second dry start during a summer oil change. 0W20 oil is fantastic stuff for extreme cold starts in the winter.
My thoughts exactly. When I took a closer look at my plastic one afterwards I saw a few stress marks (almost cracks) on the little tabs. Probably due to my housing socket which grabs the tabs as well. The better ones don't have that issue since they only grab the bottom part of the housing (motivX comes to mind). So I'm definitely glad I changed it but I kept the plastic one as well. It's still a functional part. Yeah I do like to run the higher end filters. Ultra is about $2 more than the tough gard here in Missouri so why not get the better synthetic filter. Pre filling is probably redundant anyways but especially with those temps. Wooh man is it cold up there! I don't know how you guys do it sometimes lol. Thanks for watching!
