Thanks so much for this well edited, informative, and concise tutorial! The floor jack and jack stand placement guidance really helped; I always wonder about that. I really appreciated the friendly and articulate commentary throughout. Great video!
Thanks Jonathan, glad to be helpful.
Dude you’re awesome! You covered everything without unnecessary add on stuff, spot on and to the point! Great job 👏 thanks
Dude, thanks - glad I watched this BEFORE doing the oil on my son's Avalon we inherited - he's out getting the special tool right now - I've never had a car with filter housing before. You rule, great vid, many thanks :)
Thank you. Thank you. This is how all how to videos should be. To the point and quick. Good job.
Glad you liked it!
Awesome informative video!! I’ve been starting to replace and fix somethings in my family car myself, this is the final boss for me 😂. Watched through just now hoping I can do this!
You are awesome. This is a great video! Thanks to you, I now have the confidence and knowledge to do my first oil change myself on my 2016 Avalon. Thank again for making this video, I really appreciate it!!!!
So glad this has been helpful Peter.
Thank you , you did a good video and gave me the info i was looking for. The reset of the dash menu was surely a plus
Your video is still helping many of us change the oil properly in our Avalon’s. My only problem was getting up and down under the car when I would need another tool (that I knew I needed). At 67 it gets a little harder to stand up off the ground 20 times when it should have only taken me 3 or 4. Lol. A very good video. Thanks.
Glad the video was helpful EasyRider (Cool Name BTW). I usually lay the tools I need next to me. I'm only 44, but my body also doesnt appreciate many ups and downs.
Easyrider4x, I’m also in my 60’s, still doing oil changes on my ‘17 Camry. It has gotten to the point where I lay all the tools I need on a tray, to keep from having to go up and down repeatedly. Everything is right there at my fingertips, plus it helps speed up the oil change process. I even made a tray diagram so I wouldn’t forget any tools. It has been a time-saver for sure! 😃👍🏼
I am 77 always change my own oil on my Tundra 05, an 05, LS430 and a 08,LS460L The last time I took a GMC pickup to get an oil change 20+ yrs ago. I checked the oil when I picked it up and the dip stick showed no oil. After I told the Mgr. He said, it must be a qt. Low well he kept adding. a qt. Until I was full 6 Qts. later. That was the last time I went to a quick oil change rip off joint 👎🏼 🙄
Hello! I have same car same year. You made my day and saved time and money. Please keep making videos of the avalon. Thank you
Excellent video, I was going over to change my fathers 2012 Avalon today and found your video. Changed plenty of oil in my day, but never a Toyota with this type of filter. I would have been lost. Picked up everything I needed and headed over. The only issue I ran in to was the oil fill cap specified 5-W30 so I had to run out and swap out the oil I bought. No big deal, just warning others to check before buying. 5 star vid though brother, hitting subscribe................
Thanks Rick, I appreciate your support. I have seen a bunch of debate on oil weight based of geography. Lighter oil in hotter areas and such. Between all the toyotas in my house we go between 5w and 0w.
You are right about the oil. Maybe his Avalon takes the 0W-20? Although this is also my first time seeing someone using that grade of oil. I will check the specs myself. Thanks for the comment information.
Thank You, I just purchased a 2016 Toyota Avalon XLE. It is a beautiful car, and I had no idea of how to change the oil on it, (it's to new). Thanks Again - Great video!!
Glad it helped!
Best video of the Avalon changes
They told my old lady it would be 94 dollars, I've never paid to change my oil but have never had to use these type of filters, this videos saved me a good chunk
Great video. Now I know the best place to use my jack and what tool I need to take off the oil filter. Thanks again.
Awesome video! Best way for me to learn doing the basics maintenance for my 2020 Avalon TRD!
Glad this helped out. Those new Avalons are amazing!
Marvin, the 2019+ Avalon now have a plastic cover over the oil filter and drain plug. There is a video on oil change of a 2020 ES 350 that shows this, the Avalon is basically the same car. There are 3 or 4 plastic clips you need to remove by popping out the stem with a screwdriver and pulling it out plus one 10 mm hex, which will allow you to swing the cover away. There is another 10 mm hex bolt but you can't remove it without removing another plastic panel. Not too hard, only adds another 5 min to the job but it can be tricky finding out what to do if you haven't seen it before, you might waste time removing more than you need.
Thank you for the video, Helped me out a lot!
Thank you for your time making this video I appreciate it.
Great video! Very easy to follow and understand
Glad to help out Alexander. I will have a few more coming out soon for the engine air filter and the cabin air filters.
Thanks man, appreciate the video!
Thank you! Great video, very well executed.
Glad you liked it!
thanks man, using this as a reference for when I change my mom's car's oil
Awesome! Good luck, it shouldn't be to difficult.
Thank you for clear instruction 😊
please note the older 3rd gens, at least my 2006, takes 5W30 rather than the 0W20 shown here. other than that, great video!
Thanks for the tutorial. Hope all is well with you and look forward to more great videos.
Thanks Kristen.
I just wana say its a well made how to. I like to watch a vid b4 i do a car ive never done b4 bc saves time grabbing tools... i had no idea i needed a tool for the filter lol so im glad i watched thanks
Glad to help out Dopesquatch.

Glad it was helpful!
Great professional job thank you for sharing 😊👌
Thanks Joy.
Thank your videos help me alot
Glad to hear that!
Thanks for this information. You saved me from reinventing the wheel, and breaking things. You have an easygoing way of explaining this process.
Glad to hear this was helpful.
Thank you, I've watched it twice.
Glad to help. Some viewers book mark and refer back when they need to change their oil.
Thanks Man Much Appreciated!! Great Video 👍
Thanks, glad it was helpful.
Hey so how much oil did u put in total? Only 6 quarts? I put 6 in but it seems like that’s too much 🤷♂️ Toyota calls for 6.4 though?!?!?
Thank you so much
Thanks man
Outstanding!!!
Glad to help!
Thank you, i would like to know the torque values for all the parts removed
Thank-you!
For 2010 and before, select "ODO" during the maint reset step. Select "Trip A" for 2011 and up.
I suggest using a socket with the oil canister remove tool (my after-market tool from Amazon takes a 1 1/4" socket) rather than plug into it directly with the the ratchet's drive gear. As you mentioned, those canisters can be REALLY hard to remove, and from looking at a lot of review pictures, I suspect people break those cheap after-market canister tools by cranking on them this way. Also, when looking for removal tools, look for ones that grab a little higher up on the canister and engage those two tabs you see on the sides - it'll help prevent striping out the wall canister itself when you are cranking on it.
Good Suggestion Cakeorgtfo. I actually have a 3/4 ratchet now that fits it perfectly. The tool I have was purchased at the dealer and I've been using it since 2010 on all of our Toyotas. We have a Scion IQ, had a 2010 Rav4, a 2016 Avalon, and a 2018 Rav4. I've used this tool on all of them because the canister is the same size. To date I havent had any issues with the tool.
Good video. Being a tool nut I should just mention the large rachet is actually a breaker bar that is used to "break" loose heavily tightened objects. Many rachets have been broken by using them in place of a breaker bar. The oil filter wouldn't be that tight in this instance but sometimes we get lazy and use the ratchet as a breaker bar. You may get by with it with name-brand tools but if your tools are box store quality use the right tool. You can use a pipe with a breaker bar for those real heavy applications but never on a ratchet unless you want to watch your ratchet fail.
Thanks Dennis, good to note. My breaker bar is a Craftman that has been solid so far. I'm not sure if Lowes offers the same warranty as Sears. Back in the day they would happily replace broken sockets no questions asked. The filter housing is usually easy to remove because I don't over tighten. I did recently break the filter removal tool on my Wife's RAV4 because it seized up. I bought a tool steel removal tool and replaced the entire housing with an aluminum version because the plastic has been problematic to so many folks.
@ThisGuy hey how often do you have to change the oil with full synthetic?
Thanks for making this, helped me see what im getting into before getting started. Why would anybody design a car that requires specialty tools just to do an oil change???
Do you have the part # for the oil filter removal tool? Also, do you use washers for the drain plug, and do you know the torque specifications of the drain plug and oil filter housing? I use specifications. The dealers and mechanics are now charging so much for oil changes, it is time to do it myself. The labor alone is $50 each time, plus shop supplies, etc.
Good job Thank you ...
Glad to help.
Thanks!
I have a maintenance required indication on my screen. I am assuming my car just needs an oil change however I am not sure. I think I need my brake pads and rotors changed, my touring is wobbling a bit when I am breaking downhill. Do you have any suggestions?
@This Guy hey quick question what size is the ratchet the first time too put the valve and what size was it the second time ?
Great Video, very informative and easy to follow. Keep up the great work on the Toyota Avalon (Fantastic Car). I'll be watching for further maintenance tips!
Thanks Scott, Please be sure to subscribe if you havent done so already.
I dont ever replace that spill drain lol but I do replace the drain plug washer 😆 nice clear speaking video !!
Glad it was helpful!
Very well made video nice editing skill
Thanks Ben!
Excellent video 👍.
Some viewers who have torque wrenches may appreciate having the torque specs though...
Since I dont have a torque wrench I will need to say, hand tight is good. I've been changing oil so long I guess I take for granted what the appropriate level of tightness is. I do appreciate your support as well.
Great video. Didn't expect jack / jackstand location info, but I'm glad you gave it - very helpful. Your presentation is clear, understandable and to the point. The video gave me confidence to change an unfamiliar filter housing. Don't apologize for your gloves. Clean. Is. Good!
Glad this was helpful Conductor Shack.
Superb video! You explained everything very well and carefully. Thanks a lot!
I have a 2014 Avalon Touring, but the suspension is horrible 😫 on it...rides like an old truck. Toyota has gotten a lot of bad reviews about this issue. And so, they changed the suspension on the Avalon starting 2016. I've heard that replacing the 2014 springs with a set of 2016 springs will result in a much smoother ride. Do you have any knowledge or suggestions about that recommendation? Thanks again!
Ernest Sapp.
I am not familiar with swapping springs on the Avalon for a better ride. It does make sense, but I cannot attest to it myself. There are a ton of Toyota forums online that may be devoted to this particular issue though. I am glad that this video was helpful to you.
Really comprehensive video. Now my wife will think I’m a REAL man. If I get some, I’ll subscribe...
Thanks for your support, and good luck with your own oil change.
Thanks for the video, where did you get that plastic connector to drain oil from the filter prior to removing?
That clear drain plug comes in the box with the oil filter. You will get a new one eevery time and a pair of O-rings.
Hi I enjoyed the video, very helpful. I couldn’t quite see in the video did you have a jack on the back as well as in the front, thank you for the tutorial.
Glad it was helpful. I placed a single jack stand where I indicated and left the floor jack in place as well. That was it.
This Guy thank you
My 2018Toyot Avalon Hybrid takes 4.6 qts of oil vs the 6.4 you said. Other than that all went well.
THANK YOU BRO, NOW i CAN SLEEP EASIER.
Glad to help.
Hi thanks for video I am was wondering I have the V6 in my 2019 V6 Camry if look up Castrol lube guide they recommend 5 w 30 .I live in Australia and in my city no snow ,should I use 0w20 the dealers differ most say 5 w30 .Thank you
Hey JB. I would stick to what the manual says. There are adjustments made to the viscosity based off geography. Thicker oil is better for areas with higher temperatures and conditions.
I though all toyotas go with 5W30. Thank you, very good video actually!
I thought that too. Across the three toyotas my family has we either have 5W or 0W. I have seen some mechanics suggest other weight depending on geography, but I just stick to the recommendations.
Following manufacturer recommendations is THE WAY. That said, I use only 5W-20 FULL synthetic in all our Toyotas regardless of factory suggestion. We do mostly long, higher speed trips on interstate that tend to have minimal stops. Or, bumping along the back roads of Wyoming hoping to not get stuck in snow drift. My bias is that the 5W-20 will give better protection than 0W-20 whos sole purpose is to improve fuel economy through lower pumping losses.
My approach has worked well over many years&many Toyotas.
Feel free to be you!
what about 6.4 qts recommendation but when check the stick is way over. I noticed you added 6 qts….. should i take the .4 qts out?? that looks to be way over the stick full reading?
0W-20? What year is your Avalon? This is a first for me. But excellent video instructions. And they are right, you should be teaching....
Thanks Ebivjde. I have seen instances where the oil weight has variations depending on geography.
Please help! I can't get the initial oil drain part off as the whole canister comes off with it so I made a mess. Even after taking off and using vice grips I still can not break that part of the canister off. Any thoughts? TIA
Are you talking about that disc part at the bottom of the oil filter housing (@4:17)? If so, its not mission critical to remove it. Its purpose is to clear the oil filter housing of oil so you dont make a mess. If you cold never remove it, you could still maintenance your car, but again, make a mess. You can fit a 3/8" ratchet into the housing, which I am sure you did. From there you can use a breaker bar (really long handle) to try and break it free. These canister housings are so problematic. I currently cannot remove the cannister off my wife's 2018 Rav4. I actually broke 3 removal tools trying to remove it yesterday. I bought some really expensive solid steel tools to try and salve that. It'll be an upcoming video.
Back to your problem. If it just doesn't cooperate, I would replace the entire housing. You can find then entire piece online between $25 and $40. I actually plan to buy one for my wife's Rav4 as I am sure I may break it.
Tools size please
Are the 2021 hybrid avalons like this? Over 6 quarts that has to be a V6...
EDIT: Yeah, when you poured the new oil I see the V6 on the cover, good video BTW..
All good. I looked it up and it calls for 6.4qts total. I would add about 5 then start checking the dip stick.
I have a 2019 Toyota Avalon Touring that is due for an oil change. Your video is the closest that I can find to a 2019 tutorial. I would assume that the procedure that you have shown is pretty damn close?
Its pretty much the same except that the 2019 has a larger engine. It will need slightly more oil, but they still use the exact same oil filter that I showed. According to the book the 2019 uses 0w-16 oil. I'm now sure where you can buy that type. I use 0w-20 in mine and it is OK. The book also calls for 4.9 quarts, but you should remember that not all of the oil drains out when you change it. I would add 4qts then check the dip stick, run the car for a few min, turn it off, then check the level again.
Thank you! Excellent video. You missed your call in life, you should have been a teacher!
Thanks Juan. I really appreciate that. I am actually a "Learning Design" freelancer for a living. I sell video tutorials to big companies, except those are really polished and businesslike.
Great video. I found it very helpful . I have a ‘17 Avalon (my first Toyota). Do you ever replace the crush washer on the oil pan drain plug on your Toyotas?
Yes I do, if one comes in the box. Lately, I haven't seen them packaged with the oil filters for some reason. I am looking into this because the dealership tossed my wife's crush washer and it drips oil.
@@ThisGuyProductions That’s what I was afraid of. I just now ordered a pack of 10 from Amazon. If you’re interested, search 90430-12031 Oil Drain Plug Washer Gaskets. Have a great day
@@Shovelups I'll look them up Mike. They are useful and can be used on all kinds of cars too.
Great video! The title is incorrect, though. This 3.5 engine appeared in the 2005 Avalon. The 2004 has the 3.0 with the older style filter. That is the previous generation.
Thanks Craig. I am willing to be it used the exact same filter though. All our toyotas use the same filter. Toyota Avalon, Sienna, Rav4, scion IQ, and Scion Tc. The oil volume is different though.
Not gonna lie, coming from an 03 camry that filter part looks a little daunting, but as a soon-to-be owner of a 2014 Avalon I'm sure I'll be using this as my go-to when it's time to change the oil for the first time.
Glad to help BrucifyMe.
Similar situation here! I’ve always avoided changing these “eco-friendly” filters and paid someone but this video has given me the confidence to give it a try
Thanks for video! But Mobil1 would be better over castrol. 👍🏼 especially for toyota.
Thanks Juliet&Bitsy, I will check that out.
I'm a woman, so forgive my question if it is idiotic. Does the splash guard have to be removed to change the oil on a 2016 Toyoto Avalon. Thank you so much for your answer.
Cynthia, Your question is not idiotic and I have been fortunate to constantly see how women are so much smarter than us me. The splash guard does not have to be removed to perform an oil change. The oil pan is further back and the drain plug is rear facing behind the oil pan.
Thanks I hope there is more videos for Toyota avalon 2016
Thanks Beans. Anything specific you need?
@@ThisGuyProductions any small maintenance easy job 👌
@@mmortada1978 Sounds great.
@@ThisGuyProductions actually I am not happy with speakers it's very heavy I can't adjust it to be satisfied, also there's car maintenance reminder , we can go to that's part will be nice
@@mmortada1978 So you are looking for a way to reduce the bass in music?
9:33 The unused paper towels wanted to stay clean and secretly exited! 😂😂
so you don't need to replace the oil drain plug gasket every oil change?
Pretty sure you do. I’d do it just to be safe.
If you get a replacement gasket with your filter you should absolutely use it. I am reusing a rubberized gasket that has been fantastic.
I suggest addressing torque specs.
Good idea. In our next video. Do you have those numbers handy?
Yes, oil pan plug 27lbs-30lbs. Recommend 27.5 lbs.
Oil filter 20lbs and 10lbs for the center drain cap. 3/8 drive wrench needed. and I believe 65mm filter cap.
lm live in iraq. oil avalon 2012 5W30 nice?10W30 nice?...plice
Hey Dashti. I do see some folks changing their oil type depending on temperature. In theory going with a heavier oil would be beneficial. I myself would stick with the recommended 0W-20
Should you use thicker oil?

Could of and can still make some exstra money with an Amazon affiliate link to these products
Why 0w-20? My owner manual says 5w-30 sae oil
There is flexibility with the type of oil you can use (to a limit). Toyota will vary viscosity based off geographic location. I will be sure to mention in my next video. Thicker oil is better for more tasking climates.
Could you make a video how to replaced fuel filter for the Toyota Avalon limited (2006) please? I couldn't find any videos how to change fuel filter for this vehicle.
@@mdashiqurrahman39 Hey Ashiqur, I will do some research on this.

Thanks.
good video-- but no music please..
Thanks for the feedback Ron Batt.
Use clean oil on the new "O" rings. Why would you want dirty contaminated oil on them?
Its not that big of a contamination. Yes, though, it would be more clinical to use new oil.
I suppose you would tell anybody the same thing. I change my oil every 5,000 miles. They say the oil is good for 10,000 miles. So when I change it, it's still good for 5,000 more miles. If it's good in my engine for 5,000 more miles, I guess a ¼ teaspoon on my o-ring will be fine. And even if it made it inside the oil filter housing, it would still have to go through the filter element before getting into the engine. You do realize that there is at least ½ a quart of old oil in your engine after you drain it...?
@@njsongwriter This guy is a hack wouldn't take this his advice even for adjusting car stereo settings.Get access to a Toyota Service manual and do your own research these type of DiY hack videos should be categorized as for entertainment purposes Only.
ITS ACTUALLY SUPER FUCKING TIGHT!
Super tight iHsan, tight like a tiger
Why didn’t you put the crush washer on the drain plug a new one each time ? Why do you wear a wrist watch when changing oil.
My filter doesn't come packaged with the new washer. Maybe I may need to switch brands. The watch isn't an issue since I dont get it dirty during the process.
This guy is the typical suburban yuppie Hack who doesn't research a service manual that explains the importance of changing a oil plug washer at every oil interval that are crucial to all Toyota models to prevent a potential oil leak from the drain plug.If you are planning to do this service to your vehicle take the time to refer to a Toyota Service Manual and follow the instructions with oil drain plug & filter cap torque Specs instead of watching DiY Hacks with wrist watches doing hack jobs on their personal vehicles.
Probably because he knows what he is doing
@@demondmccray8582 not on that video!
You should start your own channel where you don’t wear a watch when you change your oil, and change the oil drain plug washer each time
