its often overlooked how important a room mic is when it comes to recording drums

It helps in post, but it's not really necessary. Overheads do more heavy lifting than room mics most of the time. Room mics are useful if you want a natural sound, but can otherwise be replaced with reverb plugins.

A great tip, I do this in my 15x19' booth when I want it to sound more like a big tracking space.

one very difficult, amazing, and sometimes extremely frustrating aspect of audio engineering is the wild difference made by small changes in mic positions

Hey Charlie, I'm looking into getting a digital mixer for drums live and in my studio, you have an opinion on the Zoom L8? Thanks man!!

The L8 is a great choice! You can record easily mic to individual tracks, so it's perfect for drums! I've had one for several years now and can't complain

It's a Studio Projects CS5. They don't make them anymore unfortunately but if you find one I highly recommend it. I just put out an update to this video: ruclips.net/video/DykImxwpHyo/видео.html
