I accidentally found out that overloading a pencil condenser microphone on a high tuned snare gives it the punch that high tuned snares sometimes lack. I recommend to try.
Got a drum session this weekend, so this is good timing. I've recorded a bunch of kits before but it's always good to see the process of a pro like Jens to see if there's anything new to learn.
The room with drum recording make the biggest difference. That and the player. You don't need 10 grand in mics to get a good drum sound. I use $700 mics in a bedroom and do just fine. The mid/side thing is pretty cool too. Takes some extra work but can do cool shit. Jens is a legend. The Amorphis albums are the best sounding stuff they have done.
Crucial advice! I thought I'm too stupid to record even just a kickdrum, but now it's clear to me i just need to buy a few Neumann mics and a bunch of others!
D112 in the resonant hole or even slightly out on my Spaun 9ply maple sounds incredible!! But never attempted it on faster tempo stuff. Plumbers tape AND lug locks for movement is next level. Kudos!! 🦾🤘🦾
I agree with you guys and I almost always leave mine alone. However, there have been very rare times where I put so much of the room mic in the mix that It kinda' flammed. They were about 20 feet away. I looked at the waveform and the first upward deflection on transients was 180 deg out of phase. I actually slid them up until it sounded "better..."
4 mics on a kick and snare. Bottom Tom mics Is wild. Kids will see this video thinking what he is doing is skillful and professional, it’s not. This is decision paralysis.
Bottom tom mics is not that wild..especially if you're sampling the kit you're using in favor of other kit samples. Kick mics in general are kind of a waste if you're recording metal.
hey man, you can get some incredible results with really cheap mics, I love the Pyle knockoff 57's that are like $20, and you can get similar cheaper versions of all the mics Jens uses. As long as you are maintaining similar polar patterns you would be extremely surprised!
"shitty local bands" - No, if your intention is to take the shitty local band's money, you are not allowed to say so. Unless you expect them to call you the shitty local record engineer dude 🤪

I love my snares high; I'll keep that in mind.
What particular mic did you discover this with?
@@eihthype6578 Rode NT5 :) It makes the waveform look funny and wavy, but with a simple 40hz low cut the wavyness is gone.
This man knows what is talking about. From tuning to mics placement. Rcokn' roll!!

Best albums with Leprous with this guy! Love your drumming
I also used thread tape on my rods. I thought I was the only one that ever did this. lol. So happy Jens approves!!
Magic. I would like to hear the individual mics and any A/B adjustment that were made. Cheers.
Best guide for miking drums on yt so far

Always good to level up on some skills. Jens is THE guy 🤘

Invaluable advice.
Awesome resource drum 🥁 mic technique for recording
Thanks, Jens, always looking to pros such as yourself for technique and sound advice, Better yet if I could be a fly on the wall!
Awesome video, really detailed.
The amount of knowledge! Holy crap! Jens rules!!!
Thank you so much, this is awesome!
Cheers! :)
Perfect.
Great video. Is Jens’ studio named after the Cure song?
I'm 9 seconds in and i hear the room doing the work
a good argument for using e drums or straight up vsts.
The man himself
plumbers tape on lugs, genius tip
🔥
Hah! "Shitty Local Bands"!! LOVE this fkng guy!! 😂❤🤘🏻
If only I had 35 microphones I would try this
« Shitty local band » 😭😭😭 it hurts
Don’t stretch Evans and Aquarian heads - only Remo heads! Understand how the different heads are manufactured.
Jens, when you have room mics at least 12 feet away from the kit, do you time align those room mics to the rest of the close mics or leave the delay?
That is not a good idea as it defeats the purpose of the "delayed" room sound.
Part of what makes makes room mics sound so big is that delay. Definitely leave it.

It’s up to a good engineer to get the drum sound even if the band and drummer can’t, I even supply a good kit, lol
Don't put plumbers tape in your inserts. Especially not on PDP/DW style inserts.

Not wild kids. If you have the inputs and mics why not have options.
Bottom tom mics is not that wild..especially if you're sampling the kit you're using in favor of other kit samples. Kick mics in general are kind of a waste if you're recording metal.
Given that 80%+ of the kick sound in most metal records is a sample, 4 mics seems like a waste of time.
@@ldjc more like 99%😂. Half these drummers don’t even record with a kick anymore because it’s just gonna be replaced anyways.
the mics on this kick is worth more than my complete homestudio
Complete guide to miking drums with mics you can’t afford. Before watching this I suggest the video: how to sell my kidneys or something
