  • Follow along with today's Photoshop tutorial to create a topographic map effect. I'll show you how you can quickly create a detailed pattern with a combination of Photoshop Filters, then show you how the parameters of those filters can be adjusted to customise the effect. This new technique provides some really useful advantages over my previous Contour Map tutorial, such as infinite scalability and a super-fast way to process unique pattern styles.

    A quick tip, if you start with a canvas with dimension of power of 2, you can make a seamless pattern. Thanks for the tutorial!

      Brilliant tip! I can't believe how long I've spent making seamless patterns in the past when I could have just started with a 1024px, 2048px, or 4096px document

      Unfortunately this tip didn't work. Once the blur is applied to the clouds it isn't seamless anymore. But thank anyways! :)

      @@tp7495 If you work with Pattern Preview ON, you can create seamless pattern every time you apply an effect (View/Pattern Preview)

    I'm trying to create a topographical map, but instead of stroked lines creating the pattern, every level of relief would be separated by shading. Any advice on how you'd accomplish this?

    Great tutorial however it will only give me access to posterize if I rasterise my layer, meaning I loose all of those smart filter controls :( (CS5 user here)

    Every time I create oneI am getting certain lines that come in as blue, yellow, or even purple. Has anyone found solution for this or might know what I could be missing to get colors like that?

    When I increase the Gaussian blur it just makes it a gray canvas

    how do you get the clouds rendered to be so "soft" looking. when i render all i get is what looks like static

  • @aaronescobido

    Posterize tool is not available after I apply Clouds, Difference Clouds, and Gaussian Blur.

    • @Jamesbaxter33
      @Jamesbaxter33 4 года назад +3

      I had this issue too, are you on an older version of Photoshop by any chance? I think the CC versions automatically apply adjustments as non-distructive adjustment layers where as CS5 doesn't give you that option.
      I tried adding posterize as an adjustment layer but then it conflicts with clouds, differentce clouds and gaussian blur stopping you from applying 'find edges'

    • @skatetheglobe
      @skatetheglobe 2 года назад

      Same for me on CS6. I found if you flatten the image after you apply the Gaussian Blur filter, it allows you to posterize the image.

    And how do I apply this pattern only on only certain parts of the image, where it suppose to be mountains? Because I want to make a map of which only a part is mountaineous. When I apply the filter, it covers the whole image, and when I try to select only the areas on which Ii want to apply this (or even when I make a layer with them), it still covers my whole image/layer.
    Can you help me? Thanks.
