- This video is a complete, step-by-step guide to rebuild the torque tube in a C5 Corvette. I show you how to take the torque tube apart, how to replace the bearings, couplers, seals and snap rings. And finally how to put it back together. The same basic process would be also apply to C6 Corvettes, as they are very similar to a C5.
To see how to remove the torque tube from the car, check out this video: • C5 Corvette - Detailed...
Parts Needed:
I purchase the parts from various sites, depending on which had the best price. The bearings are cheapest on Amazon or Ebay. The GM parts were purchased from gmpartsgiant.com and wholesalegmpartsonline.com.
**Note: These part numbers are for my car (2004 Z06 manual). You may have to order different part numbers based on your car's year and transmission. For example, there were two different couplers used during the C5 production run. Also I don't know if these part numbers apply to a C6 or not. A good source of info for part numbers is corvetteforum.com.
Couplers (quantity 2): GM 88894026

Best and most detailed video on this.
Nice job, gave me a couple ideas, thanks.
Excellent video!
Thank you!
I used regular unmodified needle nose pliers and it was a piece of cake.
Damn lucky you.
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Great content. Do you have any performance mods planned for your car?
Soon I'll be installing a MGW shifter and an external oil cooler. Later in the year I would like to go to a square tire setup and run 315's all around. Other than that, no performance mods planned. I want to learn how to drive the car first before making it faster. It already has headers, catless x-pipe, cold air intake and tune.
Did your make like a weird noise? I have a weird noise that I can't really describe coming from the middle of the car, it sounds kinda like a electrical spark? Idk how else to describe it. If this is the problem then I guess I need to learn how to take all this apart
Good/Nice Video. Good luck with the rest.
Thanks!
According to the torque tube diagram, the outer black ring that you have labeled as a snap ring (@ 18:01) appears to be a seal. The diagram only shows three small snap rings in the output shaft. Could this have just been a typo on your end is is the diagram incorrect? Just trying to make sure i get the right parts. Awesome video by the way.
Check out 20:00-21:00 of the video. In this photo, you can see the larger, outer snap ring that I am referring to at 18:00, it goes into the aluminum housing. I did not replace that larger snap ring, so that's why it is not on the parts list I have in description. It seems like the torque tube diagram has a typo.
Thank for the video very interesting
Any time hopefully it's helpful.
great video
Thanks!
Damn good video my friend, I don’t even own a corvette but very informative
Excellent job 👏
Can I buy the couplings from your talk to if you still have them
Mine is an 08 C6. I’ll make sure before I order. Thanks!!
Here is what I purchased for mine (2004). I believe these will work for the C6 as well, the site lists them for 2001-2013. www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/gm-coupling-88894026.html
Screw the torque tube. Put a regular drive shaft. Just another extra cost piece causing a lot more work !!!
I have my own shop press I would have enjoyed seeing the bearing press work
What is the name of the part that came from the end of the drive shaft with the two bearings
Great video... Do you think a 2002
Has the 12 mm. Bolt holes ???
Thanks...
Jim, depends if it is an auto or manual.
Auto 1997-2004 - 10mm
Early manual 1997-2000 - 10mm
Late manual 2001-up - 12mm
This was uploaded the same week i picked up my z16, #567. Car has 61kmi and previous owner didn't supply me with ANY records. The car was always driven easy but when would you recommend rebuilding the torque tube? By age or miles? I don't have any vibrations from it now as far as i can tell.
I don't have a good sense for that. I rebuilt mine because I was going to have everything apart for another project. At 124,000 mine felt good. I would think around the 125-150k mark it would be good to consider it as preventative maint.
Great video. So the removal and install of the bearings need to be performed at the machine shop if i dont have a press? how much they did charge you for the work?
Yes, correct you'll need a press to remove/install the bearings. The bearing on the front shaft can be removed with heat and hammer, but not the others. I have a friend at work who did it for me, no charge. So I'm not sure what a machine shop would normally charge. I would guess not that much considering it is quick and easy.
I’ve done it with a toaster oven, freezer, and maybe dry ice. Just have to make the metal expand and contract to get it on.
good stuff man, thanks for the parts list. know anything about the bearing retaining bolts to hold bearing in place when reinstalling the torque tube?
Are you talking about the two bolts that hold the slave cylinder on? I was planning on re-using those on my car.
Honestly not exactly sure, was reading about it on a C and S Corvette video. They were talking about how the bearing can be pushed back into the TT during reinstallation.
@cole mcmeans Hmm I have not heard about that issue. I'll have to do some reading. My torque tube is still sitting on the ground, haven't gotten my new clutch yet.
The video was "torque tube disaster" from c an s corvettes. A guys comment mentioned the sourced retaining bolt I think he called it, I need to do some more research myself.
@@colemcmeans7809 thanks, I'll have to find that video and watch it before I put my torque tube back in
You don't mind me asking where did you get your parts from and how much, I need to redo my torque tube in my 2003 Corvette. Thank you
I got them from a few different places, depending which had the best price. I got most of the parts from www.gmpartsgiant.com/. Then I got a few from www.wholesalegmpartsonline.com/. The bearings I got one from Amazon and one from Ebay. Total all the parts were $600. All the part numbers are listed in the video description.
@@cqe5009 thank you very much appreciate the help, and I enjoy your videos.
@@normanwebbjr292 you’re welcome. It took me a while to piece together all the parts, so I’m glad to share the info.
I have a '98 C5 manual 6, where do you recommend I buy a torque tube/drive shaft rebuild kit?
I purchased my parts from various sites, depending on which had the best price. The bearings were cheapest on Amazon or Ebay. The GM parts were purchased from gmpartsgiant.com and wholesalegmpartsonline.com. I have a parts list above in the description, but note that is for a 2004 Z06. The 98's had smaller couplers I believe. There are multiple threads on corvetteforum.com that have all the part numbers listed for the various C5 years. I believe you can buy a complete rebuilt kit from Tick Performance. I just bought the pieces individually to save a little money.
What are the part numbers for the bearings you used? Thanks.
up in the comments section.
How much did a machine shop charge you to remove and press new bearings?
I did it at a friend's shop, so no charge. I'm not sure what a regular machine shop would charge.
What was the mileage on your C5 at the time of rebuilding the torque tube?
Around 124k. The car currently has 132k.
@@cqe5009 ok, cool thanks! This helps a little for me to determine what condition my 1999 C5 tongue tube might be. It’s scheduled for the shop on 9/12/2023 I’ll have it checked! 😎
Are the couplers the same or different in the front and rear?
They are the same front to rear. But there are two different sizes based on the year of your car and trans. Earlier C5's had 10mm bolt holes and later cars had 12mm bolt holes.
Here is the breakdown:
Auto 1997-2004 - 10mm
Early manual 1997-2000 - 10mm
Late manual 2001-up - 12mm
Umm does anyone know for sure if the clutch & flywheel need to be match balanced to the oem setup to avoid vibration??
I did a bunch of research on the topic. My conclusion was that, for all the cars produced, only a small percentage require match balance to the OEM setup. The rest would be ok with just a zero balance. I ended up doing a zero balance. I called several reputable shops in the CLE area and they all said they never match balance. And I couldn’t find anyone that would match balance for me. My car turned out fine.
@@cqe5009 If you decide to match balance the clutch , McCloud clutch can provide that service.
Do you know if it would be hard to extend those
Extend what?
@@cqe5009 the torque tube I'm lookin at doin sometype of conversion with my 49 pontiac keep it looking Original if I can
@@cocopublicnews6766 It seems easier to get a T56 from a Camaro or GTO. Lengthening a torque tube would be quite the project.
@@cqe5009 the transmission housings from multiple types of gm transmission match?
Detailed rebuild. So you took out a few bolts and snap rings. The machine shop did the rest.
👍
I need a driveshaft for a c6 auto where I can find one driveshaft only
Hmm not sure. If you do a google search you should be able to find some places selling used ones. I doubt a new one is available for C6's anymore
Try the Drive Shaft Shop. I just purchased a new 3" balanced drive shaft for my C6. They have several options.
driveshaftshop.com/product-category/driveshafts/gm-driveshafts/corvette-driveshafts/1995-2013-corvette-c6/
Get. Yourself the proper snap ring pliers NAPA #3152.
Thanks I'll look for those!
the NAPA pliers are a regular good quality tool, and priced appropriately . For my one job only needs, I would look to Harbor freight, or used, if possible. I have read a lot of people have trouble with that snap ring.
That looks like a C6 torque tube not a C5
That’s what mine looked like on my c5
Way cheaper than snap on shit😂😂
