I lived in old town 25 years ago. Miss it still . I’m British . I Went home . It’s so nice to see it’s not changed that much and you’ve helped me recognise what to do when I come back next year. I’ve seen 30 states and old town is my favourite place in the USA. Hoping to retire here one day . Here’s hoping . Enjoy it everyone it’s lovely . ❤
I was recently in DC (loved it and enjoyed watching some of your videos beforehand) for the first time and took the metro down to King St for a walk round the old town and lunch. I cycled back to DC using the bike hire scheme. Really easy and great on a nice sunny day.
Great video. Old Town Alexandria is a great spot. More tips and tricks for biking there, since you mentioned it (around 3:30). From King St to a typical spot in DC (say the Washington Monument) it's about 45 minutes or 8 miles. To cross the Potomac there are 4 reasonable choices, in order of recommendation: The Arlington Memorial Bridge (near the Lincoln Memorial) which has the widest sidewalk/bikepath by far on both sides. The 14th Street Bridge(s) which the 15th Street SW protected bike lane directly leads to, but has a narrow and busier shared bike/pedestrian route that is barrier-protected. The Key Bridge is ok and has a good sidewalk but is only convenient if you're biking to/from Georgetown. And worst option personally is the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge, which has a pitifully narrow path. So I'd recommend taking the Arlington Memorial Bridge (any ridership skill level) or if you want a more direct route that'll get you to the Mall and points east and north faster, then the 14th Street Bridge (intermediate cyclists skill). The route between Alexandria and DC is nearly entirely flat since it follows the river. The Mount Vernon Trail is an absolute pleasure, completely separated from traffic and full of joggers and other cyclists with views of DC. It also passes by Gravelly Point, which is a popular area to spot planes taking off and landing from DCA- it's due north of the airport.
I just discovered your channel, it’s great! Thank you for all the important information that I had not found on any other channel. It has been very helpful.
I agree that the water taxis are expensive, but I recommend if visitors are at The Wharf anyway, and the weather is nice, to take the water taxi from The Wharf to Old Town Alexandria. It's a gorgeous ride with lots of interesting things to look at. Coming back, you're kind of tied to the schedule which is infrequent. Can always take the Yellow line back to L'Enfant Plaza.
I stayed at that embassy suites across from the metro when I visited this summer. Great location but it has a atrium that all the rooms lead out into and one night they where having a party at the bar and the sound travels all throughout the hotel into the rooms.
@@TripHacksDC We are looking at coming back next year but nothing arranged yet. Hoping if we do get over it may be late June depending on Charlie’s exam dates
Love your content i wanna come back to DC early 2024 but i have a lot of new bills this year.....i really hope to be able to for just 2 nights i love it there 💗
As someone who doesn't drive I love taking the DC Metro to Old Town when I'm in the country. Lovely place to walk around and lots of friendly independent businesses.
If you’re at Gadsby’s Tavern, go ahead and ask the docent how they fit so many men into one room. And, there are two more day trips that are worth your while. First, try Gunston Hall, the home of George Mason, the creator of The Bill of Rights. It’s especially nice if Mount Vernon is too crowded. Also, if you’re interested in natural scenery, grab a picnic lunch and head on over to Great Falls.
Not really. Most folks in the DC region including the media self describe the area as mid-Atlantic. If u head furher south towards Richmond area you really can hear the southern accent and feel the southern culture. Virginia of course is considered a southern state to most/many but northern Va and dc area seems to be the cultural border area of the north-ie, it’s the mid Atlantic area. In my view the old/historic mason Dixon line reference is just outdated at this point and doesn’t reflect the current cultural reality, since that term was culturally coined centuries back
I'm a native New Yorker and live in Alexandria. Most people in the D.C. metro are not from the South, they are from the NY Tri-state area and the Midwest. Essentially, a person with a southern accent would stand out in D.C. and Northern VA.

Good suggestion!

Oof. Not great.
Enjoyed that Rob, thank you. Definitely an area and some places we’ll visit next time we are over there
Any plans in the works for another trip, Jay?

Absolutely!
I wish there was a mention of the George Washington Masonic Memorial on King Street. Great place to visit and spend a few hours.

Good additions 👍

Timely video with the Capitals and Wizards decision.
