Could This Be The LAST Doctor Who Logo?

  • With this entirely new era of #DoctorWho inbound, 'NuWho' is done, dusted, and over for good- apparently. Could this mean the usual approach of rebranding the show every few years ends with this new era too?
    What do you think? Is the reborn diamond logo here to stay, or is the brand going to regenerate again in a few years?

    Honestly, I couldn't care less as long as the logo is recognizable. They have changed it so often, mostly with the arrival of a new Doctor that a rebranding or refreshing of the logo is a tradition in itself.

    I'd have loved them to have brought back (again) the McGann/Pertwee logo. Refine it a bit, even present it horizontally. It seems significantly more versatile

      Actually, you might be surprised by the number of new Doctors who inherited the logo used for their predecessor: Troughton, both Bakers (OK, Colin’s was slightly tweaked in the title sequence, but the logo used by licensees remained generally unchanged), Davison, Tennant (first time round) and now Gatwa.

    As much as I'd love to have seen Jodie's logo stick around, I can't argue that we do need some permanence in the show that always changes, and if the logo is just the only static part of Who, then so be it.

    Hot take but I think the changing logo along with everything else in the show ensures Doctor Who never gets stale. It makes it feel like a brand new show each time as opposed to the 40th overall season and I feel by not treating it as a new show completely for every new era, you run the risk of it ending because typically shows (unless you're a soap opera) rarely last for more than about 7 seasons so by esentially turning Doctor Who into an entirely different show everytime, it ensures that will never happen to it. I don't think Doctor Who survives in spite of the rebrands, I think it survives because of them.

      I agree. Whilst it is correct; that it's not a great idea from a marketing perspective - it's part of what makes Doctor Who, Doctor Who.
      It just makes sense to usher in a new logo and everything with a new doctor atp.. and helps keeps things refreshing every few years. It helps my brain to kinda automatically identify with the fact that we are going into a completely fresh entry of the show - and it will no longer be the previous Doctor that we've come to love or hate.

    I don't think the changing logo is a problem going forward. They'll still do it. After all, just look at how many different logos DC Comics has had since it's inception. Some of them being very different. Though the latest logo, much like Doctor Who's is kind of a throwback to an older design (though in my view, not as good)
    Saying that, i do wish they kept the logos consistent. It does annoy me a little that my DVD collection doesn't always match. But can't change that. The logo changes are fixed points in time. Unless you want to explain to Winston Churchill why your dvd collection broke the universe, probably best to just ignore it... Ok i'm getting silly now. Fact is, the logo will likely change the moment they get a new showrunner. Though, RTD 1 technically has two different logos on it's own. The series 1 logo is like a crap placeholder version of the seasons 2-4 logo.

    In answer to your title question, I’d be inclined to say: No. Not least because, down the line, it’s always possible that BBC Studios would want to change streaming partner and/or co-production company. New companies getting involved with the show would probably want a new logo as part of their own relaunch. (However, given that there’s now a tradition in resurrecting former logos, perhaps Sid Sutton’s lovely “neon” design will get another moment in the sun, albeit with a bit of a CGI make-over!)

    It's just felt to me like the logo change was anticipated just as much as seeing the new everything else.
    Tardis interior & exterior,
    Sonic Screwdriver,
    Doctor actor,
    Logo, &
    Theme tune.
    They all (more or less) changed together, and it just worked because it was something to look forward to.
    Having one logo for 10 years will get old fast.
    I can see where you're coming from, and maybe that is their plan, but I hope it's just for the 60th anniversary, and Ncuti gets his own one logo and show theme

  • @MrPaulFCockburn

    As someone who was never particularly fond of the “Diamond” logo, I was extremely disappointed - though not surprised - that the BBC Studios/Bad Wolf/Disney+ felt the need to ditch the “Whittaker” logo as part of - well, not a relaunch but - creating a fresh start for the show. But, like Rich, I really loved it-in part for possibly one reason why others didn’t…
    For the first 10 series of “NuWho” the show generally had at least two different brands on the shelves at any one time-the “current Who” logo for the latest series, and that reworked Pertwee/McGann logo which, by default, came to represent “not-current Who” (and all 50 years, back in 2013). As a late example, there was even a Series 1-7 box set released using that Pertwee/McGann logo, presumably to distinguish it from the then-current Capaldi show.
    From 2018, however, the new Whittaker branding became THE logo for the show, and it started being used by all licensees almost immediately. It was a firm statement of intent, but because of its clear linkage to Whittaker and Chris Chibnall, I think its use on especially “classic era” products (such as “The Collection” box sets) antagonised some people before it ever appeared on screen.

    My favorite thing about doctor who is how it's like a whole new show with each doctor--new logo, new star, new tardis, new theme. I have to admit, I'm wary of the "whoniverse," I'm afraid you may be right, this might be the last rebrand we see (for a while, at least), and the show would grow stale.

    I started watching ('Classic') DW with the repeat of Logopolis, as part of The Five Faces of Doctor Who, when I was four years old, I saw Tom's regeneration into Peter Davison and immediately fell in love with the music, the titles and quite fancied Nyssa and Tegan. The core idea of DW, the Tardis and the established Who history up to that point was interesting and fun as I found out more about the whole show. My favorite story became The Five Docs after I first saw it (and the countless times after), so although I'm 'officially' fond of the neon logo and the starfiled title sequence, I absolutely love the Diamond logo, as it was on the boxes of the BBC Videos, it has my favorite colours, red, yellow and blue and in my opinion, it SO works and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

    As a fan since the early 80’s I think the recognisable thing about Doctor Who IS the changing logos. I look at my extensive book collection from Target all the way through to new Target and it’s inconsistent, but I’m used to it. Each different title gives me a visual record of when I collected the items. Same with visual media, collectables etc. I love this new retro style, but as an 80’s fan I’m a sucker for the neon. The Chibnall era one was also brilliant. Simple but striking (pun intended). Anyway, I’m not overly fussed by DW’s schizophrenic marketing.

    As a child of the 1970s and a teen of the 80s, my favourite Doctor Who logo is the diamond one closely followed by the 'neon' tube one. I haven't really cared for any of the 'New Who' logos because I prefer the title to be presented as a 'stack' ('Doctor' on top of 'Who').

    The logo change has always seemed to be attached to the introduction of a new Doctor. Exceptions include the fact that the logo changed towards the end of Tom Bakers time due to a modernization thing at the start of the 80s and the logo didn't change a great deal in "Nu Who" until the Matt Smith era. In my opinion, as long as the logo says "Doctor Who" and NOT "Dr. Who" in some way, it doesn't matter that much in the scheme of things. Just get the writing of the stories good.

  • @ChristopherMazzones
    @ChristopherMazzones 7 месяцев назад

    I don’t think it will be the last one but if it is, then it is a very a good logo due to being both simple yet complex. When times change, and the pendulum swings back and forth from simple logos to complex logos, the new Doctor Who logo is able to work for either side.

  • @Jayk129
    @Jayk129 7 месяцев назад

    I’ve never been a fan of the Diamond logo, even as a kid watching Classic Who in the 80’s. I also don’t think in the Sci-Fi fandom space it matters nearly as much as branding experts would like you to think it does. Let’s look for example at the logos (technically they are not logos, but “Word Marks” as all 3 are text only) for the two other biggest Sci-Fi “Universes”, the Stars, Trek and Wars.
    They’re both younger than DW, but not by much. Trek is 57 years old and Wars is 46 placing both franchises currently at an age DW was at during the production of New Who. Star Wars has done what branding experts say is best, that iconic logo has remained unchanged since the first (or fourth) movie premiered in 1977. While other aspects of the branding has changed over time, not the least of which being the very names of the movies themselves, That Star Wars word mark has appeared unchanged except for color across every incarnation of the property.
    Star Trek on the hand hasn’t remained the same. You have the original style logo used for TOS and TAS. Then you switch to a new font style for the Movies. TNG completely changes things up with an entirely different logo style. Then it starts getting really confusing with DS9 and VOY returning to using the movie era font for their logos. Which is really weird since the movies produced during their runs on TV used another different logo font that was neither the older movie font or the TNG font. Then came ENT doing it’s own weird logo thing including dropping “Star Trek” for the first two years. Following the 2009 movie the franchise seems to have settled back to using the TOS style logo for everything with a few modifications from show to show. Much like DW Trek’s constantly changing the branding doesn’t seem to affect people being able to identify the property at all. It also makes it easier to identify individual elements/era of a property by its unique logo.
    Where I think DW really drops the ball in branding is not adding “Doctor Who: “ or DW branding to its spin off properties. With the exception of the first 2 seasons of Enterprise every Star Trek series or movie has started with “Star Trek” in it’s name. Star Wars may not be in the title of every one of its properties, but the Star Wars word mark is always on the logo somewhere (See The Mandalorian). Maybe some of the DW spin-offs would have benefitted from doing this as well. Whether it is naming shows things like Doctor Who: The Sara Jane Adventures or putting the DW logo on shows like Class or Torchwood. This more than keeping a consistent logo is what the Whoniverse needs to do going forward to build up the brand. The only other suggestion I’d have for DW is to not use the same logo for everything at the same time, use the era appropriate logo. For example the Blu-Ray release of a season of Sylvester McCoy episodes should have the McCoy era logo on them, not whatever the current DW logo happens to be.

    While the Chibnall Era logo had a nice economy of design and ostensible simplicity to it, I would strongly argue that it was the most of-its-time branding to date. If one looks closely, there is a subtly embedded Venus symbol where the ‘H’ and the ‘O’ reside making it very much a logo for the female Doctor Who. Also, it has an overall sense of it being a DW logo that is slightly glitched or even recorded over like an old VHS tape, signifying Mr. Chibnall’s desire to perhaps impress upon his audience that this is Who but definitely not as you know it. Therefore, it is not one that could really stand the test of multiple revivals of the show due to its creator’s overall agenda of upending the apple cart and giving the viewers an entirely alternative take on its lead character. My personal choice for an evergreen Who logo is the classic Pertwee/TV Movie one from now to eternity. The diamond is fine for this year but it’s very 70s unlike its timeless predecessor.

  • @DavidBeddard
    @DavidBeddard 7 месяцев назад

    I liked the pre-Chibnall approach best. Anything retrospective used the superlative 1996 logo, while current era releases use whatever the current logo is. Either that, or you release everything under whichever logo it was released with originally. I think the decision to rebrand _everything_ under the Chibnall era logo (even though it it was a great logo) was unnecessary, egotistical, and frustrating. But, realistically, it really doesn't and shouldn't matter because the important thing is the quality of the entertainment output, not the merchandise branding.
    Do I think this Whoniverse branding will be permanent? No. Unless the franchise dies a death, someone will take over when they want to refresh.
