Dear Ness. If you rearrange S.W. Erdnase into 2 words, you get Dear Ness. If you rearrange all 8 into 1 word you get dearness, or answered. I like to think the unknown author heard many questions over the years about his methods, he finally wrote a book that “answered” every single one.

14:20 the camera stuff is so right. We can re-watch things unlimited amount of times. Used to learn flourishes by slowing vids down, but dang nearly every trick on video becomes learnable after a couple of countless of watches. You almost wanna avoid palms when doing video performance cuz a palm is so noticeable without misdirection, and idk I think it's only possible in person to truly misdirect.

I love card magic, but I only perform for lay people. Once I learned and practiced about 20 routines, I found out that even when the spectator is some 1%er that messes up the trick, it can be recovered and switched to a different one. First example was when a setup was ruined by a guy that was told to pick any card from the middle of the deck and he chose second from bottom. I had him return it to center of deck. Of course I knew his card and its position so I switched to losing it through a series of false shuffles and cuts and was able to force it to 11 from top, then just did a spread and double lift(just to add something since trick was ruined). I held up the card and asked if that was his pick and he laughed and said nope! I apologized and said I didn’t mean that one, I meant THIS one then did the snap switch and maintained my angle perfectly. He said “What the F dude?” I quickly placed the 2 cards on bottom of deck and he said wait and covered the whole deck with both his hands concealing it and asked what the next card was before I shuffle them again. I told him I’m not sure but if I had to guess I’d say Queen of hearts. Of course I was correct because we were still in the setup. He was scratching his head and I was proud as hell! Was all impromptu but borrowed from 3 different routines

Penn Jillette gave his opinion as to a dividing line between juggling and sleight of hand on a "Fool Us" clip on RUclips. The contestant claimed to be selecting a certain card out of a rapid "dribble" of a deck by his open skill in control of it. The audience was supposed to think there was some hidden sleight of hand to allow that selection, because such a degree of control looked too amazing to be real.. Penn and Teller concluded that the performer had "cheated" by doing exactly what he said, which Penn said was not magic but juggling. Apparently the open display of dexterity to Penn is juggling, while the hidden use of dexterity is magic. The performer (who may have been lying, because the rules of the contest don't appear to prevent the contestant from falsely claiming the trick to have been detected) said they were absolutely right, which is even more amazing than fooling them would have been.

A trick I’ve tried to practise myself. Kostya Kimlat js a legend! Interesting take on it by Penn but I’m not sure I agree with- if that logic holds true then the muscle pass isn’t magic. It’s just juggling?

@@JackRhodesI had to look that one up.
Similar dividing lines exist in at least one other field of magic: mentalism. Do great feats of memory count as mentalism or not? How about feats of suggestion?
Part of the problem is that when a subfield of any field is far enough developed, it gets a name of its own and people tend to dismiss it as part of the larger field it once counted as. For example, who considers ventriloquism a part of magic any more? There are those who don't want to count mentalism as a branch of magic either.
Now we see the recent terms "cardistry" and "coinistry" for the artistry of manipulation of the respective objects. When manipulation becomes advanced enough, the mystery aspect of the performance can drop out entirely and it stays entertaining. A few years ago I'd attended the touring Illunionists primarily to see Kevin James, whose show I'd seen previously in Coldwater, Michigan, but what really captivated me in this diverse troupe was a lady doing one simple trick over and over: producing cards, as a dance. I must admit that a lot of her attraction to me was simply being a pretty lady dancing on stage, but the trick is one everyone knows and most people try to learn, but give up because the facility doesn't come quickly enough for the effort they have to put into it -- like playing a musical instrument.
