Phil, My issue that I can't seem to shake is that when I try to breathe to the side, I swallow water because the exhaled air causes bubbles to form in my BOW pocket as I'm still exhaling air when it's time for another breath. I have to turn my body more than I should, which leads to shoulder pain when I drop it during the pull phase on my non-breathing side. It's difficult to identify what I'm doing wrong when I can't record a video of it myself. I have recently started swimming with a snorkel to help my technique and strength in hopes of helping. Any initial thoughts?
It's completely normal to feel anxious about open water swimming. A few techniques like exhaling fully on each stroke, gradually acclimating to the water, and swimming with a buddy can help ease those fears. Good luck and don't give up!
Thank you for sharing your experience! With swimming, there are always lots of things to improve, and each time you make progress in one area, it makes the others a little easier to master too. Experimenting with swim toys, such as a swimmers snorkel, fins, pull buoy, kick board and hand paddles may help you focus on all the individual areas of your stroke (such as breathing) without leaving you so out of breath. Good luck and don't give up!

Only been learning for a couple of months, not mastered the bow wave breathing. Struggle to get enough oxygen to do more than 25m
Me too.
