Carl Perkins was the most under-rated of the early rock n roll stars! He wrote his own songs. He was a great guitar player. And his voice was as good as any. It has always made me so happy that Carl lived long enough to see his rightful place in Rock history recognized by the second and third generation of rockers and got to play with most of them in tribune concerts. Carl Perkins is one of the founding fathers of rock n roll.

Ken Page agreed, I saw him in 1986 live as part of a 50's music review in Foxboro, Mass, and most of us didn't really know who he was other than the guy who wrote "Blue Suede Shoes". He was the opener - but he quickly won over the whole crowd and totally outrocked everyone else on the bill that day - including Chuck Berry who played last and was meant to be the headliner. I kept thinking - this Carl Perkins guy is the best damn rocker in history, way more talented than Elvis. You can hear how his voice, guitar playing and stage persona was copied by a lot of musicians (including Clapton and George H.) But none of them really came close to the original. To see him live was an amazing experience - he was on fire, everybody was dancing. It was pure magic.

Eric Clapton said after this performance, Carl told him he was the greatest guitar player he'd ever witnessed live. Clapton broke down in tears later saying that it was the kindest thing anyone had ever said to him right after playing together on stage. It was a tough time for Eric as his confidence hs dipped slightly.

The poor guy was doing 18 pounds of drugs a week. I have his autobiography. I think I got about half way through it and I almost threw up. One of the very coolest things that I ever heard from Eric Clapton was a radio interview with him on a radio station on Long Island. A VERY nice guy. He is a rock star but he would be nice enough to hang with you.

Steve Cropper one said of the late great Al Jackson of Booker T and the MGS. He was so tight he was like a drum machine. They didnt need ant click track metronome when recording.

theplayer2286, no, I’m not quoting him at all. It’s purely coincidental if John and I, both, hold early rock ‘n’ roll in high regard. I was aware he loved the genre but I had never read what he had to say about it (until I saw your comment and checked to see if he’d made a statement close to mine, or the same as). There was this simple compact in 1963 with Slow Down on side 2. I thought John sang Matchbox. Carl Lee Perkins was well played by the Beatles in their early years and greatly influenced George Harrison's playing style (Everybodys trying to be my baby and a sample) A legend. A Myth.

I think Eric Clapton is one of the VERY few people to work with ALL FOUR Beatles in solo projects... 🤔
