- Chevy ,HHR , Key Can Not Be Removed. Stuck On. This Chevy HHR the switch in the Shifter Console broke and then would not let the key be turned off or removed. If left on the battery will go dead. To get the key out ,look under the steering column and remove the little pop out cover . In there you will see a white button or pin , at the end of a switch that is laying on its side. Push the pin- button in and this will let the key turn and be removed.

My key just got stuck in my 2011 hhr after trying to turn it on because my car was completely dead. Watched this video before a friend came up to me & said they would have to take apart my whole steering wheel area to get key free. Thank You from saving me from all that nonsense

Keep in mind , most of the time it happens because of shift interlock broken , and will do it every time till fixed . This will let you turn key off to save battery ,

Thanks, I've managed to just use my finger to push the pin back, and the key comes out easily. As temporary fixes go, it's definitely a life saver! Don't know if anyone here has looked into a more permanent solution, but I've seen that other HHR owners might have used Dorman 924-712 Shifter Release Repair Kit to replace a broken plastic piece and avoid replacing the entire shifter which might cost $160 or more! However, it's best to check first with someone who really knows these cars.
My husband told me, when it gets stuck, to listen for a 'click', then it will turn back completly and the key comes out. Sometimes its a second or two, sometimes its almost 10 seconds but now that I listen for it, it always works.
Worked beautifully for me. totally dead battery on a 2006. The only challenge is getting your head under the steering column to see what you are doing. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember this only lets you turn off and ge key out , not fix the issue . Usually the safety inter lock switch is bad

Well....... My 2006 HHR has finally fell victim to this issue. Thanks so much for this video. GM did a mass recall for this issue back in 2014. I unfortunately didn't take my vehicle in because at the time, everything was working fine. Now I'm kicking myself in the ass for not taking it in.
Not that the vehicle is 15 years old I'm sure the dealership won't honor any recalls from 7 years ago.
I'm afraid to even ask the dealership what the cost will be to replace the shift assembly 😂

This does apply to 2006 models as well if anyone is wondering. The compartment is under the steering wheel.
Really useful thanks! The Mrs. had left the lights on overnight in my 2007 HHR and then when I tried to start it (with no battery, unbeknownst to me) and the key got stuck, it's a bit fiddly to do this but it definitely worked

At one time i believe there was a recall but may be over . A lot of times it is the interlock switch that goes bad , I believe it is in the center consol

This gets the key out , but does not fix why key sticks . On some it is the interlock switch in center console . the plastic part breaks

This worked so easily good video!! Now if I can get to my hatch opening to get to my battery that's be awesome!
If battery is dead , you can open the hood , there should be a positive connector with a red plastic cover . Can hook battery charger or jumper cables to it and the neg cable to a engine ground . . Or in side i think bottom center of rear hatch there is a plug , remove the plastic plug , should be a release lever in there .

It does not fix the broken shifter , but allows the key to be turned off so battery will not drain.

I've had it to the point where the key got stuck in the ignition switch but won't turn over luckily for me I press in the ignition switch with my index finger for 10-15 seconds to get it back in place then I can turn the car on /get the key out...gotta love gm parts lol

So will you be doing a complete fix video for this issue? Good tip. I am thinking about an HHR when my PT Cruiser finally dies...What is your opinion on the difference between the two? I have heard that the Chevy gets better gas mileage for one thing. The PT only gets around 22mph on the highway, which is not great for a 4 cyl car.
Not sure on the fuel millage , but the shifter , inside door handles and exhaust all break on these , but all kinda easy to fix. I just done the exhaust repair on this one but did not film it ., but the door handle and air filter video is coming soon.

check fuse #8 in fuse box that its inside the car. Maybe the fuse has blown. Passkey III. Yoy may find it inthe owners manual.
most of these HHR`s i see with this issue , ends up being the interlock in the shifter consol breaks from where it is mounted .
My 80 plus year old neighbor isn't going to be able to do that everytime, should I replace the electronics in the shifter (servo) to be completely repair this ? Or the brake switch that it goes to also or both
it is usually a plastic part in the floor shifter. Check dealer to see if there is a recall.

So my car had this problem , the car would turn on for a bit and died .. Then the key wouldn't turn on .. So I gave it a jumpstart and the car started to work within minutes . I came to work , and tried to turn my car on but it was dead .. Radio turned on and when I tried to jumpstart it again it just completely died ... Any suggestions I can do to fix the problem ?? Do I need a new battery or do I need to change out the shifter ?
if jumping makes it start , then i would have battery checked , if ok then check to be sure it is charging . if it is , then next thing is look for a battery drain when key is off . oh and make sure nothing is left on to drain battery . if after market radio is installed , it may be the drain , if there is one .
Could you send the official link about that recall please? My GM dealer says there is no recall on it.

+Alex Stone Not sure of the recall number , but dealer changed shifter to fix the issue . they fixed for free. may call a different dealer and see what they say

I my hunch is strethed shifter cable. Just block the wheels or apply E Brake remove the cable, move the trans detent each position then move the shifter the same.
Then back, once have checked each gear selection.
My car has snap lock adjustment.use flat blade insert into the slot raise the lock make adjustments.
My old Nova's had rod and clamp as does my monte. my Nova SS installed Hurst dual gate shifter, just pull out the kotter key, move swivel ahead or back one turn
Did adjusting cable fix , There was a recall on the interlock switch . Dealer fixed this one under the recall . not sure if they are stilll fixing them
@@wtbm123 My problem is if the car is on slope or downhill can fell the car rock forward and back. The park awel could be worn, otherwise my car has latch use screwdriver pry up on, push the gear selector as far forward as I can, then pull the cable out to match the gear selector pin then reinsert the cable on the pin. Then retest, so far seems okay

SIMPLER SOLUTION: Restart the car, and put the car into drive. Then place it back into to park. Turn the key to off, and the key should come right out. This happens with my HHR every now and then. Always works for me.

@@wtbm123 What plastic bit??? My suggestion doesn't require taking apart anything...just shifting the gear from park to drive as you would normally do in everyday driving.

This is only to remove the key. That only lets you remove the key . does not fix the issue . shifter interlock . in center console if hhr is usually the broken piece

There is no need to do any destruction to key lock . It is a issue with the shifter . a plastic part breaks off down in shifter and does not let the switch down there in the shifter to be activated to let the key come out . Gm will fix the shifter issue under a recall , but this is just so you can turn key off till you can fix , so battery does not go dead.
Just another problem on the hhr, I have a 2008 and it’s a lemon from hell.
I just got chevy hhr 2006 had to have ot jumped twice, now nattery is dead again anf ley is stuck in ignition. I want mu 3000.00 refunded and salesman refuses to speak to me.im a hsndicapped senior and really angry
Somehow i think i would bypass it for good, thats the trouble with safety devices, they can go bad, annoying designs :(

Push the gear up then the key comes out it not in park

Yea if i remember correct this one needed the shifter interlock replaced , I believe it was in center console. It was fixed at dealer under a warranty . But that was a good while back.
