Mitch was one of the last symbols of a country where we all more or less got along. Looking at these singers, it is liking looking back at another country. A more beautiful one.

You sound ridiculously sentimental, naive, and ignorant, as most do who make these pollyanna comments about "the good old days of yesteryear." Look it up - Mitch Miller's Sing-a-long' show ran on TV 1961-1964, when legalized racial segregation was the law of the land across most of America, denying millions of Americans jobs, pay, housing, and unbiased medical treatment...iconic American singer Bessie Smith had unnecessarily died from such segregation practices years earlier when she was refused treatment at a 'white' hospital after being injured in an automobile accident.
Or how about Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner (1964) and the countless other Americans who were routinely beaten and murdered across the Southern states in an attempt to deny them their basic human and Civil rights...or maybe the Proud Boys of the Klu Klux Klan who assassinated Medgar Evers in 1963...or maybe you heard about Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington a couple of months later, where at least 1/4 Million Americans showed up to stand up for Civil RIghts and equal employment opportunities....or how about President JFK being assassinated three months later in the South, after which spontaneous celebrations erupted on Main Streets all across the old Confederacy to revel in his death. The video of those celebrations across the South on Nov 22, 1963 could be seen for years in 1960's/70's historical news programs, but you'd have to have the research skill of a Ken Burns today to find that embarrassing footage of the South spontaneously celebrating Kennedy's assassination, as it has literally been removed from the media and internet airwaves....or how about local Govt officials across America in 1961-1964 blocking school-house doors or using other less obvious means to keep non-whites out of 'white' public schools - not because the student don't have the tuition or talent - simply because of their race...or how about the limited job opportunities and representation for women in the national 1961-64 corporate workplace, despite being more than 50% of the population...and women making a fraction of male pay when they did the same jobs. You think everyone "more or less got along" with all these events going on coast to coast? lol
This is just a small sample of events in the country when Mitch Miller's Sing-a-long program was being broadcasted on television. Hell, behind the scenes on Mitch's program itself, the white advertising sponsor's rep pushed Miller nonstop to get rid of black-american singer Leslie Uggams. Listen to Ms Uggams tell the Archive of American Television exactly what the sponsor's rep was doing: ruclips.net/video/xdhA5tnYHxE/видео.html.
You can't judge a book by its cover. Mitch Miller's program was nearly as incongruous with what was happening in the country when it originally aired as it is today.

We used to drive long drives on vacation in the summer in about 1968 to about 74 and my father would put on Mitch Miller sing along and we knew all the words. Every member of the family would sing all the way there and back and it sounds so corny to say today. We just don't live in that beautiful world anymore.

Mitch Miller was always special. He had an eye for fresh new talent -- Mark Kaplan, for one! But Miller was a superb musician -- one of the best oboe and Cor anglais players of his generation, a superb choral and orchestral conductor. His choruses were outstanding. There’s more instrumental color in this show, too. You would never find this level of thorough professionalism on Lawrence Welk’s show. With Miller, everything was about the music. It’s really too bad that his Sing Along show on NBC was so short-lived. This show was a kind of vindication. And his conducting style is his way this time, not the television director’s! That is, espressivo.

None of the songs were original except perhaps the violin segment. Some of the songs were from the early 1900s, played often when Mitch had his weekly show, The songs were also on "Sing Along with Mitch" albums. Obviously the Rosemary Clooney song was her hit from the 50s.

When this show aired, there were 3 National networks and maybe a local tv channel in your town. The target audience would have known every song. They are “Standards”
