Mitch was one of the last symbols of a country where we all more or less got along. Looking at these singers, it is liking looking back at another country. A more beautiful one.
I agree. You have the Democrats and leftist liberals to thank for that. Filth and degeneracy are the order of the day.
It's a lost world.
You sound ridiculously sentimental, naive, and ignorant, as most do who make these pollyanna comments about "the good old days of yesteryear." Look it up - Mitch Miller's Sing-a-long' show ran on TV 1961-1964, when legalized racial segregation was the law of the land across most of America, denying millions of Americans jobs, pay, housing, and unbiased medical treatment...iconic American singer Bessie Smith had unnecessarily died from such segregation practices years earlier when she was refused treatment at a 'white' hospital after being injured in an automobile accident.
Or how about Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner (1964) and the countless other Americans who were routinely beaten and murdered across the Southern states in an attempt to deny them their basic human and Civil rights...or maybe the Proud Boys of the Klu Klux Klan who assassinated Medgar Evers in 1963...or maybe you heard about Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington a couple of months later, where at least 1/4 Million Americans showed up to stand up for Civil RIghts and equal employment opportunities....or how about President JFK being assassinated three months later in the South, after which spontaneous celebrations erupted on Main Streets all across the old Confederacy to revel in his death. The video of those celebrations across the South on Nov 22, 1963 could be seen for years in 1960's/70's historical news programs, but you'd have to have the research skill of a Ken Burns today to find that embarrassing footage of the South spontaneously celebrating Kennedy's assassination, as it has literally been removed from the media and internet airwaves....or how about local Govt officials across America in 1961-1964 blocking school-house doors or using other less obvious means to keep non-whites out of 'white' public schools - not because the student don't have the tuition or talent - simply because of their race...or how about the limited job opportunities and representation for women in the national 1961-64 corporate workplace, despite being more than 50% of the population...and women making a fraction of male pay when they did the same jobs. You think everyone "more or less got along" with all these events going on coast to coast? lol
This is just a small sample of events in the country when Mitch Miller's Sing-a-long program was being broadcasted on television. Hell, behind the scenes on Mitch's program itself, the white advertising sponsor's rep pushed Miller nonstop to get rid of black-american singer Leslie Uggams. Listen to Ms Uggams tell the Archive of American Television exactly what the sponsor's rep was doing: ruclips.net/video/xdhA5tnYHxE/видео.html.
You can't judge a book by its cover. Mitch Miller's program was nearly as incongruous with what was happening in the country when it originally aired as it is today.
I was only a child when Mr. Miller was on television. His music brought so much happiness to my parents and grandparents. Now, I can relive those memories when times where so much simpler. This is classic entertainment.
😢 😊 here too 👍🏿
Rest in peace, Bob McGrath (12-4-22). I was only 12 when this aired originally, and I remember my father loving "Sing Along with Mitch". I'm sure this was the last time Mitch Miller was ever on television
I so miss this program. Thank heaven for the glory of You Tube
Merry Christmas.
13:41 Officer Joe Bolton?
I remember watching this show when I was a little girl, and I miss those days of these songs! Also, I miss Mitch Miller. God Bless you Mitch Miller for bringing this great era of music to Television. You are greatly missed!
THANK YOU FOR A REMINDER OF WHAT AMERICAN NORMAL REALLY IS! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS! MADE MY DAY!
America before the Commies took over
One of the first shows I ever remember seeing as a child was Sing Along with Mitch.
Rest in peace Irene Cara, she passed away at the age of 63, on November 25,2022
This takes me back to my childhood and makes me think of my mom, she's been gone now for over 40 years 💛🌻
I know how you feel.
My mom has been gone since 12/22/2005 , I know she loved the show , hope Dad liked it too ❤️
@@plymouthfuriousMe too. 😢
My family always watched and enjoyed the music in the early '60's somehow I missed this. A fond look back to a better time.
IM 67 YRS AND MIKE, THE OLDEST OF 7 CHILDREN AND ALL OF US ENJOYED MITCH MILLER AND HIS GREAT GANG! WE'LL NEVER SEE THIS AGAIN WHAT TALENT GOD BLESS THEM ALL RIP.THOSE YEARS WENT BY FAST OMG
The good old days! I'd listen Mitch when browsing through my Dad's old records growing up. Mitch and many other singers and bands my dad had are responsible for me loving all kinds of music to this day! Thanks for sharing.
Great memory of this special. Rest eternally Irene Cara and Bob McGrath, both lost in recent weeks.
Memories! I remember my parents loving this show, back in early 1960s..
Class, which we shall not see again. Thank you for this treat.
Love them old songs. Memories of the early fifties & sixties. Love I got six pence.. The BEST YEARS OF MY
GROWING UP YEARS SINGING WITH DANCE ALONG
CHARLESTON & JITTERBUG & 2 STEPS etc.....
Thanks! L oving the songs.♥️👏🎉
I remember when this program aired. Many, including me, got choked up when they sang "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" because it was thought to be for the 52 American hostages who had been held in Iran since Nov 1979. They would be freed over a week later on 20 Jan 1981.
GOD BLESS THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN AMERICAN LIFE MADE SENSE AND WE WERE ALL AFTER FREEDOM FOR ALL.
20 January 1981, the same day Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president, and America would return to greatness.
@@t.b.g.504 I voted for Reagan to get the hostages released, not knowing he was working behind the scenes to keep the hostages in captivity until the election.
I loved this show and loved Bob and Leslie's voices so much
We watched this religiously back in the early 1960s. People wouldn't sit still long enough now. I'll bet there are a bunch of father-son duos there.
LOVE MITCH MILLER❤
RIP to Mitch himself, as well as Rosemary Clooney, Matt Kaplan, & just recently, Irene Cara and Bob McGrath. God bless you all and thank you so much for the great music 🙏🎤🎶☹️☹️
I think it was Mark Kaplan.
Also RIP to Carroll Spinney (Big Bird).
IRENE CARA SINGING AND TAP DANCING.....HEAVEN!!!
RIP to her 🙏🎤🎶💔
@@sandraandrews9907 .......And to Bob McGrath.
Rip irene cara and bob mcgrath and mitch miller
RIP Irene Cara, just passed in 2022. one of her early TV appearances. Wow, we seem centuries away from Sing along with Mitch but just 40 yrs ago for this special.
What a fun time way back then! Always looked forward to his next presentation. NH
AS BOB HOPE WOULD SAY/SING AFTER THE END OF HIS SHOW, "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES", YES, 'THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES"! SOME HAPPY 😊, SOME SAD 😓, SOME GOOD 👍, SOME BAD 👎, BUT LIFE GOES ON .............. AND AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!!🤗
I loved watching the show with my parents. They owned all the Mitch Miller LPs. Mitch said they all made a beeline to New York to do the show. Period I wonder if they recorded it at 30 rock.
Keep more Mitch Miller TV Shows coming, nice memories
Unfortunately, this is the only one I have. There are other Sing Along With Mitch videos out there on RUclips.
This is a corny memory that I'm going to share. We used to drive long drives on vacation in the summer in about 1968 to about 74 and my father would put on Mitch Miller sing along and we knew all the words. Every member of the family would sing all the way there and back and it sounds so corny to say today. We just don't live in that beautiful world anymore.
What fun 😁
Wow, a Beatles song too.
Beautiful, thank you.
thank you . Brings smiles to my heart.
I love their sound! And songs ❤️
My mom had Mitch's Christmas sing-along record(vinyl,of course),and every year, she would start playing that record as her and I would start decorating the Christmas tree. I found a video on RUclips that features the songs on that vinyl record. And it brings back memories of yesteryear growing up.
Once more I could listen
Early 60’s memories at 6yrs old watching Mitch Miller on Friday nites as my great-grandmothers show that she watched weekly while babysitting me on Friday nites sometimes.
Bob McGrath of course was a big star by this time because of Sesame Street
I thought so. I didn't know he worked for Mitch Miller as well.
@@Catloverplayer Same!
RIP to Bob McGrath who died yesterday at the age 90. 🙏🎶🎤
Yes you answered my question thank you...
5 ⭐! 1981. Talkin' 'bout Miss Irene C. on the rise. Her song Anyone Can See and song What a feeling being the theme of movie Flashdance. Thats "Out here on my Own" from movie Fame. She's great. 🎶 I remember in early '80s. 👍
Didn’t Irene Cara star in Jesus Christ Super Star? …. With Ted Neely?
This is a pretty good contemporary spin on what "Sing Along with Mitch" might have been like in the early 80s.. A lot of these songs ("Yesterday", for instance) were released not long after SAwM was cancelled in '64..
OMG it's the inspiration for Amazon's old holiday TV ads!!!
Mitch Miller was always special. He had an eye for fresh new talent -- Mark Kaplan, for one! But Miller was a superb musician -- one of the best oboe and Cor anglais players of his generation, a superb choral and orchestral conductor. His choruses were outstanding. There’s more instrumental color in this show, too. You would never find this level of thorough professionalism on Lawrence Welk’s show. With Miller, everything was about the music. It’s really too bad that his Sing Along show on NBC was so short-lived. This show was a kind of vindication. And his conducting style is his way this time, not the television director’s! That is, espressivo.
I only just learned that Mitch Miller was an accomplished classical oboist who premiered the oboe concerto by Richard Strauss
Good harmonies in "Yesterday".
Great video.
Irene Cara is so young, I remember her from singing Flashdance and Fame.
Irene Kara seems an odd choice for this special. An educated guess tells me the producers insisted someone like her to appeal to the younger demos
This was post-Fame, though not too long after.
Im so glad I typed in Mitch Miller. I've always loved his music and directing
Simply beautiful and heartfelt ❤
After watching Leslie Uggims on Utudbe she mentioned Miller. I'm not sure if she was referring to him but it made me think of Mr Milper and these singers
Put a huge smile on my face
Thank you
Great Singers!
My darling wonderful Rosie. This show is fantastic, thank you for uploading.
I love this!
After the original show , Bob McGrath went to Japan and became a big star there in the night club circuit.
Thank you very much for this!!!
Pure joy!!!
Thank you for uploading
Both Mitch Miller and Ray Conniff were similar in that they both had a lot of singers backing them.
So true - they also worked together at Columbia Records in the 1950s too.
So square, so cheesy, love it.
I liked them better when it was black and white but they still legit af.
@elifire
Good evening from France !
Me to I prefered black and white. I bought all Mitchel's records !
Best wishes 😊🌞
I'm always down to sing "Has Anyone Seen My Gal!!!!!!
This is wonderfull fun.
Love it!
Thank you!
Brings back great memories of my dad.
That last song always makes me laugh!
0:30: Look, it’s the Bob from the Street of Sesame
Bob McGrath was on Mitch Miller before Sesame Street..
Bob McGrath , is 88 years old.
The Eminem of the 1960s. Will the real Slim Mitch... please stand up...please stand up. Respect. Was a living Legend. I used to stand on my GrandPappys feet as we fanced around the room.
Mitchell William Miller (July 4, 1911 - July 31, 2010)
have this album
The diversity is fascinating.
Diversity is perversity.
I love Mitch Miller, I really do, but I can't get the great SCTV satire of him out of my mind! 😲😲
No Grammy award; no Grammy nomination.
RIP to both Irene Cara & Bob McGrath!
Rosemary Clooney, George Clooney's aunt..wow
Never heard of this.
Looks like Lawrence Welk Show without the bubbles 💭💭🥂💭
Mitch Miller never had a "follow the bouncing ball" on his show. That reference originated from the old Max Fleischer cartoons and movie shorts from the 1920's.
Correct. "Sing Along With Mitch" showed the song lyrics but no bouncing ball.
Thinking of the bouncing ball cartoons led me here. I will try max fleischer. I couldn't remember that name.
Wait a minute. I though Rosemary Clooney hated Mitch Miller. He forced her to sing "Come Onna My House" back in the day and she always hated that song. And there she is doing it again!
5 Neat Guys
Vladimir Lenin had a TV show?? Irene Cara was on Sing along with Mitch? I didn't think she was that old!
Hey it's Bob from Sesame Street!❤️ And Irene Cara she is sure a sight to behold 🍑
15:51 Bob McGrath solo
The Mitch Miller Singers. Strange bunch, where in the world could you even try to do that today? Not to mention the ladies.
Not as many as there was in 1961.
Were all of these songs popular at the time of this recording? That is, would nearly every viewer be familiar with the songs? Or are some of them originals for the show?
None of the songs were original except perhaps the violin segment. Some of the songs were from the early 1900s, played often when Mitch had his weekly show, The songs were also on "Sing Along with Mitch" albums. Obviously the Rosemary Clooney song was her hit from the 50s.
All songs were from the American Songbook of the 1920s 1930s. The Irene Cara number was from the 1980 film, Fame. Rosemary Clooney sang one of her biggest hits. When this show aired, there were 3 National networks and maybe a local tv channel in your town. The target audience would have known every song. They are “Standards”
Nice tribute to John Lennon with "Yesterday". He was killed during the previous month.
Mark Kaplan on the violin. I wonder what Maestro Ara Malikian would think about him playing Paganini?
Tenderly, is that 🌹 Rose Mary Clooney? Is that George Clooney's Aunt? Wow this stuff brings back memories, and I remember they would include "if I had a hammer 🔨 " single if you bought Fresca cola 😊
Yes Rosemary Clooney sang "Tenderly" on this program and she is George Clooney's aunt.
Mitch Miller occasionally had the pleasure of working with Percy Faith.
Mitch Miller was head of "A and R" (Artists and Repertoire) at Columbia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artists_and_repertoire
Percy Faith was an artist for Columbia records under Mitch. However the synergy of making recordings of Mitch play oboe and English horn with the Percy Faith Orchestra resulted in some memorable recordings.
Here are just a few that are on RUclips:

Is that guy who sings I only have eyes for you the same guy who was on sesame street?
Yea Bob McGrath
Yes, "I Only Have Eyes For You" is being sung by Sesame Street's Bob McGrath.
Gotta admit would be a worthy MAGA band.
He introduces a singer called Bob McGrath that is the spitten image of Niel Sedaka!
Poor Irene, she knew not that sorry group.
No Grammy
Percy Faith made an album with Mitch Miller mostly instrumental.
