My native language is Slovenian and I also speak English and Italian. I learnt English by watching youtube videos and Italian when I was watching Italian cartoons as a kid. Right now I am 15 and I have just started learning russian a month or two ago. It's not that hard because it's quite similar to Slovenian. So my biggest tip to learning languages is to watch movies and shows in that language. ☺
Thanks for your comment Kristina! I also find that watching things you enjoy is a great way to learn a language. It's so much better than just using grammar books, etc. Also, I find young people these days tend to be really good at English thanks to RUclips - many people watch vlogs made by English speaking RUclipsrs, which is a great way to practise your listening skills!
Hi Kristina , i am an english learner and i come from viet nam . and what a coincidence , i am 15 too . And do you have an address of facebook , please give me the link so we can add friend and practice english ^_^

I think having a purpose is one of the most important things while learning a new language I've started learning hindi recently abd its really hard but I keep reminding myself about how happy my family in India will be when I say sth to them in their native language it helps to keep me going and makes the learning process challenging and fun
Have you tried using memrise and HiNative? Memrise uses a course-like structure with different topics. I use that and TTMIK for Korean. My spanish is a lot better and I use Hinative for that - I tend to write my questions and write my answers in Spanish and then natives correct or answer your questions.
I'm doing the exact same thing. I am native in English, I have been learning american sign language for about a year but I usually just use PSE, and I learned Spanish in school for 2 years but I only know the basics so I just started relearning it😂
How coincidental that we are on a similar path. This year I started learning ASL. It was a required course at my college, but I fell in love. After that class, I have started a new appreciation for languages and want to learn Spanish. I live in California so there is a lot of Spanish speakers here and it will open up a whole new world of people and I’m very excited about that :).
Totally agree! Setting goals, writing/talking about our progress, accept those hard times and some struggles and apply what we already know as soon as possible, will help us to keep our motivation on track.
its going pretty well! i have also passed a french examen and now im trying to get more vocabulary through simply reading a lot and watch french videos))
You are indeed experienced in this. You give out that vibe that you are a good educator and I have no doubts in choosing your channel as my main references in learning German, I've been learning for 40 days every single day. German is easy at first glance then it is not so easy afterwards.
This is very helpful! My native language is Spanish but I was fluent in English by 1st grade. I even skipped kindergarten because I was too "advanced." I learn languages really fast but when it comes to languages that aren't in the Roman alphabet, it's a little trickier. Thank you for the video!
You have absolute right. People who want to learn a new language (like me) often consider that they will be able to spend more time learning, than they will really have. This assumption causes, that despite best intentions they don't carry on learning process , because of not real assumptions. I am certain that good planning and proper split of the material in the time should deal with this problem. SMART method is a good way to measure own progress.

Hi, I'm learning English and I like videos that talk about how to learn languages and all that kind of stuff. I think it is a way to improve my English, watching videos about this type of subject in my target language. Am I in the right way?
I think you're right! I hope my videos can help those of you who are learning English (to improve your English) but also those of you who speak English already (to get better at other languages). Thanks for watching!
Yes, that commitment is important. Been doing it for at least one hour a day, twenty five days a month. On one and a half year already and yet still not fluent in Russian. But I will get there. I expected to work on this for years.
That is the right mindset. I have been learning Mandarin for one and a half years now and I am at a lower intermediate level. And I will keep on learning for a couple more years.
Native English and French speaker. Took Dutch and Spanish in Highschool and College. Great video. My native language is English even though I'm learning Spanish it isn't only language that I want but I'm giving it as a start for learning foreign languages. After I become fluent in speaking Spanish. I'm thinking about learning French and then I'm thinking about learning Mandarin Chinese as well.
Thank you for this video. It's really helpful and I didn't put much thought about what you said before. I know learning Korean is going to be really hard for me.
I'm trying to learn Norwegian. So far, I've learned enough to get a few words here and there, introduce myself, and tell somebody I'm American, and tell somebody I speak English in Norwegian. (If you're going to a country that speaks a language foreign to you, I think it's mandatory to learn how to tell somebody what you speak in that country's language. People can't find somebody to take over for them or translate if they don't know what language you're speaking by either understanding a bit of it themselves or by being told what you speak. Off that side note, I'm trying to learn Norwegian because that's the part of my heritage I feel the most connected with, and I want to travel to Norway someday. I'm aware most Norwegian know English, but I still want to be able to have basic conversations in Norwegian and be able to read Norwegian maps and signs by myself. (I'm not going to assume signs at the train station, airport, etc are in both Norwegian and English.
I have a 7 month project and for it I chose to see how far I can go with teaching my self a new language. I don’t know exactly what I am going to choose but I kind of want to do mandarin but then again I don’t want to be too hard on myself
heyy i just subscribe ur newsletter and the link that you give is really what i need. It's hard for me to keep my commitment to learning new language. So, I'll try it ur starter guide and wish i can do that. Thank you
These were interesting points but what the people want to know is "What is the process of learning another language?". To learn another language you must understand how language works in general. You must also understand that you are probably going to need a year to learn a new language, 4-6 months to learn the mechanics of language, and another to take your new language and run it through the popular apps so you can get used to speaking it (this is also how you begin to become a polyglot). If you want to experience even more, this is the time to take a trip to a "Spanish" speaking country to hear how native speakers speak. 90 days should do it, which is the typical validity of a visa. Now onto the basics. Language is divided into three operations. The first is confirming or denying the identity of something. To do THIS, we must learn how to use 5 kinds of words. If you are unilingual, you want to keep your sentences SHORT and SIMPLE. Keep in mind that you are not ready to hold a conversation with anyone who has not not studied the same material as you. Here's what you do NOT need to do. You do not need to memorize 5,000 words (probably through translation), and you do not need to know all the verb tenses...just one (the others will come later). To begin to get the basics take a Statement then change it to a Question and vice-versa. Once you learn the first operation, you will be able to hold a conversation rather than a monologue.
Thanks for the video. I have taught myself many languages. This is my main challenge: listening comprehension going from beginner lessons to "real language"content. I have read that we need to listen to comprehensible input: in other words, if I can understand beginner level Czech audio, but movies seem too difficult, then movies are not providing me with useful comprehensible input. Could you do a video on how to progress , listening-wise, from beginner, to perhaps upper beginner, eventually to real content (news, movies, interesting podcasts, etc)?
I'm 12 lol I should have started at 10!😂 Btw I'm learning Korean too. It's kind of hard but I find it fun lol. I find myself walking around my bedroom saying random phrases all dramatically while looking in the mirror.😂😂😂
AngelBubble Kisses Well, I want to learn French (which I'm doing) and Norwegian at the age of 11. But if you start earlier it's even better! You will know more when you will need the language! Good luck!
AngelBubble Kisses I want to learn korean (because there's a problem when you're a kpop fan and don't understand korean). But then there's Spanish... I don't know which one to choose first.
;-; ŏ_ŏ I would start with spanish first, especially if youre a native english speaker. its written with the majority or english characters whereas Korean has a whole new alohabet. You can definatly learn them both though, Good luck in your learning!!
I must admit that I never bother about the question why I want to learn a language. I'm autistic and just learn for the sake of learning. I don't plan to travel much or even to move to another country. It just feels good to understand something I didn't understand before. And I never make a timetable or a plan beforehand. I just do it, mostly between 3 and 6 hours per day.
do you have any tips for getting better at speaking and writing a language you already know? i know spanish and i can understand it well since im latina, but it's hard for me to write and speak since i've mostly grown up in english speaking countries.
Thanks for your comment! That's a very good question - I will try and make a video about this topic. What is it exactly that's holding you back? Do you feel like you don't know enough vocabulary? Or you simply can't put it together efficiently to make sentences?
5-Minute Language I feel like since i live in the us and im surrounded with English speaking people so there isn't much need for me to speak Spanish except for my family. When I speak to my family the majority is a mix of mostly English and a bit of Spanish, but if I speak just Spanish I use many words wrong and I have improper grammar because I visualize the sentence in English and translate it directly. I also forget a lot of words in Spanish and then I have really long pauses in between speaking.
It's quite common for people to try translating in their head when speaking another language. I actually just published a new video on this topic so check out the channel and you'll see it there (it's called 'How to stop translating in your head'. In terms of learning and remembering words, perhaps try spaced repetition (I also talk about it in one of my videos called 'How to learn and remember vocabulary). Good luck!
Any advice for people who want to learn a language but don't know anything. I want to learn Italian, but I don't know where to start. Should I start with grammar or what should I do?
Hey! Thanks for your comment :) It is quite a popular name in Poland! I've got a video coming up later this week about how I became fluent in English so make sure you're subscribed if you don't want to miss it! Are you learning English or is it your native language?
These are mind sets. I was looking for where to start like vowls or alphabet etc. Where should I start? Good video tho and funny intro 👍 Just not quite what I was looking for. Lol
Wow Allah has gifted you a hilarious and extra stunning voice . I listened this amazing tips 3 times. Thank you so much for sharing this terrific tips.
Payton Campbell-Prins Okay yeah I do I literally always ignore it. But I had to say SOMETHING this time. I see it honestly so often I could not help myself.
@@ihrtschenle I watched an RUclips video about this and she said 🌟 Start with the alphabet . Learn to read and write in that language and practice your pronunciation . 🌟 Learn some basic vocab like Greetings, Introduction , noun, verbs , adjectives and how to order food etc in that language. 🌟 Learn the grammar , tenses etc and try to form sentences . 🌟Keep expanding your vocab and grammar and practice speaking and listening . Note : You can watch some YT videos about it .Just Search it up.
Do you think you cod make a video on what you specifically have to do to learn a language? I started Spanish on duolingo but got bored of the system that duolingo uses. I'm not demotivated, I just want to learn without duolingo. But I don't know specifically what to do, for example do I buy a language book and just work through it? Etc. Thank you so much :)
You can check out my blog post about this topic :) www.5minutelanguage.com/how-to-learn-a-foreign-language/ Hoping to turn it into a video at some point too so make sure you're subscribed to my channel :)
5-Minute Language THANK UOU SO MUCH! It's exactly what I need! I will continue to work through my textbook that I am using but also use your SMART goals system instead of duolingo. I am really excited and feel like I am going to have so much more fun leeaenihn Spanish! Thank you so much!
Hyvää huomenta! 👋 Good morning! I want to learn Finnish, I have a pen pal in Finland and although she can speak English well I would also like to be able to write to her in Finnish. However I have looked into it and it is a rather small Language compared to something such as say Chinese or French, any tips for finding resources? If anyone has a favourite Finnish band or singer, movie or anything of the sorts I'd love to know. Thank you! Moi-moi!
I want to learn japanese and after that portuguese i was bilingual all my life, but for some reason i don't know where to start! I wanna start off learning vocabulary, how to pronounce it and grammar. But now i'm stuck because i don't know what words to use! I don't wanna learn words that aren't important and i can't find any apps that really helps i tried dualingo and memrise but thats not really my learning style, this problem made me give up. I thought of ways to learn vocabulary and i found 2 ways that i prefer for myself. The first one is having a diary writing in it every day and translating them in the language i wanna learn and then memorizing those words. The second one is to write down random words that i hear or use everyday and memorize them and i will learn 20 words everyday. Please help me i'm at the start and i'm already stuck. I might use the second method + watching shows of that langauge. What do you think of my method? I would like to know because i only want to be able to speak japanese. I don't want to learn katakana, hiragana and kanji yet. I want to learn that when i'm a older. Please can help me. If i succeed learning japanese vocabulary and grammar every day, i will come back in 2 months and write a comment in japanese with the ABC alphabet. Wish me luck!
Hello! Great to hear you're learning Polish! I've got a course for absolute beginners in my online language school - let me know if you'd like to find out more :) 5minutelanguage.teachable.com/p/polish-for-absolute-beginners
I try to learn old high German (German is my first language) and after that I hope I understand middle high German as well (i understand most of it without learning). I try to learn it because I like the sounds of it and not a lot of people know it. I feel like I'm a sadist for trying it, on nearly every site there is just a "forget learn it for yourself, study or forget" and because of that there isn't a lot to learn from. I searched an hour just to find a dictionary 😩
My question is: What if the language that I chose has characters (like japanese or bahasa melayu) should I learn the basics first which will be written in english letters or learn the characters first before learning the language or vice versa?
I want to learn Arabic as well and I am making progress but it is much harder than any language I faced but I think it will be worth it (I am a sophomore now and hopefully by the end of senior year I will be fluent in 5 languages i am self-taught and have an insane addiction to learning languages that no one understands my goal is to be a polyglot. I learned in this order: English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese but Italian fell off because I don't have any conversation partners but I think im doing good for 15)
I already speak English and quite a lot of Russian but I still want to learn french spanish and “relearn” russian do u think I should do it all at once or one by one?
Beth Is not okay obvi one by one it would be too hard for a human I tried learning Korean and French and I failed bc I coudlnt process but then I tried Korean only now I know a few words and can make sentences
It's actually quite difficult to mix up French and German in my opinion. Maybe you will for the first day or two, but you'll probably be able to separate the two in your head with little to no effort. in my experience, I only mixed them up when I said simple words (like I would say "ou" instead of "oder" for the English word "or"), and that usually happened at the beginning of a practice session. After a few minutes, you'll probably be in the zone. I also tried to learn German at 11, and I'm super glad that I did. I did not end up making real progress until I was 16, but my brain was already wired to pick up the accent and the words. You should try it for a few days and see what you think! If you like it, consider investing a few weeks into it. If you still like it at that point, go as far as you can! You won't regret it!!
Hi! I'm currently trying to learn Polish, does anyone have recommendations for movies, series or TV shows? Or some really easy books, since I'm still a beginner?
That's amazing you're fluent in English and Persian already at 12 :) I'm sure French will not be difficult for you. It shares a lot of vocabulary with English and its grammar is quite similar too. I'd start with a free app such as Duolingo if I were you. Good luck!
I don't actually have a concrete reason,I just felt like I wanted to do something better with my free time
That's cool. And what language are you learning now?
He’s learning Frisian
Ich spreche kaum deutch
So, I’m still learning
So I'm from the future I bet you have more free time now, are you still learning?

Great video. My native language is English even though I'm learning Spanish it isn't only language that I want but I'm giving it as a start for learning foreign languages. After I become fluent in speaking Spanish. I'm thinking about learning French and then I'm thinking about learning Mandarin Chinese as well.
Currently learning Norwegian. Hope i'll stay on track! 😂
That's great - good luck! :)
Current progress? Also, I see you play fortnite! I also play, and I'm learning Norwegian. I've yet to find any Norwegian speakers in EU servers😅
Thanks a lot i appreciate all what you do😍😍😍😊😊
Thank you for this video. It's really helpful and I didn't put much thought about what you said before. I know learning Korean is going to be really hard for me.
Glad you found it useful Elvin!
(I'm not going to assume signs at the train station, airport, etc are in both Norwegian and English.
learning korean because i wanna move to korea when i grow older! so far i am pretty good in the alphabet, and im trying to master batchim
Amazing, good luck! Have you got a personal or family connection with Korea?
5-Minute Language i do not, but i became interested in the culture. i wanna move there to become an english teacher!
@@zionawhite4632 Sounds good, hope it goes well! :)
I have a 7 month project and for it I chose to see how far I can go with teaching my self a new language. I don’t know exactly what I am going to choose but I kind of want to do mandarin but then again I don’t want to be too hard on myself
Merci beaucoup🙏
Thanks for watching! :)
I am currently learning Danish,French,Italian,German and Spanish because I want to be fluent in all of them.
heyy i just subscribe ur newsletter and the link that you give is really what i need. It's hard for me to keep my commitment to learning new language. So, I'll try it ur starter guide and wish i can do that. Thank you
Brilliant - I'm glad you found it useful!
I have no idea why I started studying ancient Greek. After 3 years I can translate some Aesop´s fables. :D
Go for it 💐✨
You should try the New Testament next!
Loved this video ! Thanks !
Thanks for watching!
I wanna learn Korean at age 10 good luck me 😂
I'm 12 lol I should have started at 10!😂 Btw I'm learning Korean too. It's kind of hard but I find it fun lol. I find myself walking around my bedroom saying random phrases all dramatically while looking in the mirror.😂😂😂
Good luck! You can do it :)
AngelBubble Kisses Well, I want to learn French (which I'm doing) and Norwegian at the age of 11. But if you start earlier it's even better! You will know more when you will need the language! Good luck!

I want to learn korean (because there's a problem when you're a kpop fan and don't understand korean).
Good luck!
5-Minute Language thank you so much!! :)
I didnt know I can use SMART in goal setting in language learning. This is great!
Glad you learned something new from my video :) Good luck and thank you for watching and commenting!
Any advice for people who want to learn a language but don't know anything. I want to learn Italian, but I don't know where to start. Should I start with grammar or what should I do?
I suggest you start with a free app like Duolingo or Memrise. Once you've done that, you'll have a better idea as to where to go next :) Good luck!
That shade of red lipstick looks really complimentary on you!
Thanks!
Thank you very I like your method
Great, thanks for watching :)
When you said Agnieszka I directly know that your from Poland. How you learn English? Thank you for this video
Hey! Thanks for your comment :) It is quite a popular name in Poland! I've got a video coming up later this week about how I became fluent in English so make sure you're subscribed if you don't want to miss it! Are you learning English or is it your native language?
Thanks for your comment James! It's nice to hear that :)
And yes - Agnieszka Holland is a great film maker!
Good luck with your French!

I'm learning as well. Let's learn together 😂
@@ihrtschenle I heard from most people to start learning vocabulary first 😊
@@ihrtschenle I watched an RUclips video about this and she said
🌟 Start with the alphabet .
Thx 💙
imo the hardest part of learning a language is starting it or where to start
Is wanting to learn french because you think the language looks beautiful and emotionally connects to you a good reason
Definitely! That's exactly why I started learning French - because I thought it was beautiful! Do you think you will go for it?
5-Minute Language oh totally! I started studying yesterday with some duolingo lessons and it’s really fun and amazing!
Great! :)
Thank you
Hyvää huomenta!
Thank you!
Moi-moi!
Check out this blog post with a list of resources: www.101languages.net/finnish/finnish-resources/
I enjoyed the video. Can you provide me with the link to the guide please?
Thanks Jasmine and sorry - I forgot to include the link! It's now in the description box underneath the video :)
Habits are the key to a succesful life.
My stratgy is memorise vocab first then grammars and expressions later.
Haha, I'm definitely guilty of this! 🙋😂😅

Hi I'm learning Polish and finding it quite difficult. Thanks.
Hello! Great to hear you're learning Polish! I've got a course for absolute beginners in my online language school - let me know if you'd like to find out more :) 5minutelanguage.teachable.com/p/polish-for-absolute-beginners
Hi that would be fantastic. Any help would be much appreciated thanks.
Jan Cree ..uczę się polskiego! dobry wieczór jak leci ?
I try to learn old high German (German is my first language) and after that I hope I understand middle high German as well (i understand most of it without learning). I try to learn it because I like the sounds of it and not a lot of people know it. I feel like I'm a sadist for trying it, on nearly every site there is just a "forget learn it for yourself, study or forget" and because of that there isn't a lot to learn from. I searched an hour just to find a dictionary 😩
Thank u thank u thank u so much
You're welcome!
My question is: What if the language that I chose has characters (like japanese or bahasa melayu) should I learn the basics first which will be written in english letters or learn the characters first before learning the language or vice versa?
Danyca Nichole Roda i am malay..so bahasa melayu/malaysia is my native language.. i'll be glad to help you :)
Please make a video related to how to learn Portuguese language
thanks for u tips ! at the moment I study english and spanish, but I also wanna learn others languages.
Great, good luck!
I learned in this order: English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese but Italian fell off because I don't have any conversation partners but I think im doing good for 15)
Logan Atty how did you go about learning? My goal is to be a polyglot as well
I already speak English and quite a lot of Russian but I still want to learn french spanish and “relearn” russian do u think I should do it all at once or one by one?
Beth Is not okay obvi one by one it would be too hard for a human I tried learning Korean and French and I failed bc I coudlnt process but then I tried Korean only now I know a few words and can make sentences
Hi there . What do you think about learning the polish and english languages ? I mean to learn them both . Is it okay , or it is not a good variant ?
It's been 4 years since I've been studying German. I feel stuck in a rut, big time!
Don't worry - it will get better!
I might learn esperanto so um good luck
I start to learn Spanish,I hope that this video can help me💗☺️
Good luck!
How can i learn forien English language?
I’m 11 and I really want to learn German but in school I have to do French so I’m worried I’ll get confused with the two languages
I started learning English when I was Young still learn actually I get Better now Lol
Great! Good luck :)
Learning Russian and i need these tips ty!
Good luck with your Russian! What level are you?
Hi! I'm currently trying to learn Polish, does anyone have recommendations for movies, series or TV shows? Or some really easy books, since I'm still a beginner?

I'm 12 my native language is Arabic, I speak fluent English and somehow persain from school , and I really want to learn French!
Any advices ?!♡
That's amazing you're fluent in English and Persian already at 12 :) I'm sure French will not be difficult for you. It shares a lot of vocabulary with English and its grammar is quite similar too. I'd start with a free app such as Duolingo if I were you. Good luck!
