What's important to understand is that it's completely fine to make mistakes! The key is to just keep writing, it doesn't really matter about what. I put off writing in the languages that I'm learning for such a long time because I was afraid of making mistakes and because I didn't know all the vocabulary I needed, but once I started writing I realised how much fun it is and how fast I got better at it. From being barely able to write a diary entry, I'm now writing stories with over 120k words in my target language and it's honestly so much fun! And the best feeling is when you compare your old writings to your recent ones because you're gonna go "WOW, I improved THAT much!" (and you're gonna laugh at the old mistakes you made hehe).

Hi Lindie! As a native Hungarian speaker this video was really interesting. When I started learning English, my teacher always told me to start thinking like a native English speaker in writing too, which helped me a lot. (Not the easiest advice and it does not work for everyone but in some way it is surprisingly helpful.)
And I don't know is someone has already answered this for you, but I saw that you put the word 'körbevezet' in parentheses with a question mark. I wouldn't use this in that sentence and 'vezet' is perfectly fine. Maybe I would use the word 'autózik' or 'kocsikázik' (this is a casual use) which expresses it more that she has no purpose. I hope I could help! :)
    További sok sikert a magyarhoz!

This is exactly the way I'm learning Chinese and it has helped me a lot! I know people say when you're a beginner in Chinese you don't really have to worry about writing, 'cause it might be too difficult and maybe you won't need to actually write a character in your entire life, so the focus tends to be exclusively on the pronunciation and intonation, but I've discovered it is so much easier for me to remember the tone and pronunciation when I write the character down and keep repeating it. What I do is listen to easy conversations prerecorded and looking for the words I don't know, I write them down, and then I try to write them just by hearing them. If I came to something I don't really know and can't found an explanation, I ask my native friends for help or type my text up so I can get corrections from native speakers. So yeah, basically when it is all combined, I learn better.

    • @lucie442

How do you learn the characters?! I’d love to learn Chinese but I can’t even remember one character 😭

    • @danielf1066
      @danielf1066 2 года назад +1

@@lucie442 this is kind of a late response and im only a beginner in chinese so take what i say with a grain of salt
personally when im learning a new character i will write it out a bunch of times hoping the repetition helps it go into my head (this is probably a pretty common tip though)
then, later on in the day, or the next day, I will think back to the word and try to visualise what the character is in my head. If i can't remember, I will go back to my notebook and check to see what I had forgotten, and then visualise the character in my head whilst saying the syllable out loud a few times. By giving my brain breaks before checking up on vocab i learnt, it helps to consolidate the knowledge.
Finally, my last tip is to learn some of the common radicals and try to spot the radicals in new characters that you learn. That way, each new character doesnt necessarily feel like a brand new symbol, and feels instead like you are putting together familiar building blocks
sorry for being 5 months late, hope I could help :)

What has clearly prevented me from progressing is my unwillingness to write in Japanese. Not even that I don't want to but the strokes (order, shapes, quantity) are daunting + the perspective of never having a Japanese handwriting as nice as my Roman handwriting (French/English/Spanish) + the time investment I foresee for a mediocre result are just discouraging.
Yet I know that reading (no issues there) and writing for me make languages stick better 🥲.

Typing in Japanese shouldn’t be an issue if you can read it. You could just write it in hiragana on your roughy draft so to speak. Mind, I’m terrible at writing in a foreign language too so I totally feel you on that. It seriously hurts my head to write in Japanese even though speaking it is ok. I occasionally write something from time to time but it’s really not a skill I’d use except to comment on RUclips or Facebook anyway.

      @marieclaireasseko 3 года назад

@@paulwalther5237 Yes, I don't have difficulties typing but I find new words don't stick as much as when I handwrite them. Reading and handwriting are my go-tos for language learning, but maybe I should find a more motivating combo/shift my perspective specifically for my Japanese learning instead of lamenting about how my usual techniques don't work 😅

The process of writing as a beginner/low intermediate in a language has always been much more frustrating for me rather than motivating, so I find that I basically never do it. Because of this, my writing skills in Korean are definitely weaker than my speaking/reading/listening, but I can slowly improve my writing over time now that I'm an advanced speaker. If I had handwriting as pretty as Lindie's seems to be in every language, maybe I would feel more motivated to write more often haha.

I took the liberty to correct some of the sentences you wrote. Hope it helps. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Ezen a héten megnéztem a Nomadland című filmet a barátommal. Ez a film sok díjat nyert (or ennek a filmnek sok díja van but the first version is more natural), de szerintem nem volt túl jó. Néha úgy tűnik (nekem), hogy az ilyen "slice of life" fimekben nincs cselekmény, csak szép jelenetek.
Ez egy amerikai film. A film egy nőről szól, aki elvesztette a munkáját és csak járja Amerikát (this is a bit tricky because driving around may be "körbevezet" but that verb doesn't really fit in this context). Sok emberrel találkozik.
A nő nem szeret emberekkel együtt élni (lakni maybe better or just lenni but I'm not familiar with this movie so don't know which is more correct).
Például, amikor azt mondja a barátja(I'm not sure if she says it to her friend or vice versa but I'm guessing the latter judging by the following): "(kérlek) látogass meg a házamban" (this is a bit stiff sentence, a more natural one would be "gyere el hozzám"), de amikor elment a barátjához, akkor nem akart nála aludni. Így éjszaka az autójában/kocsijában aludt.
A film egy kicsit csendes volt (halk means the volume is too low). Nem emlékszem, hogy milyen volt a zenéje. A filmben sok szép táj (scenery) van. Nem (túl) érdekes a film, de szerintem sokat szép felvételt lehet az amerikai sivatagokról látni.

You must have just accidentally misspelled it, in the last sentence is not “sokat”, just “sok”. :)
For Hungarian language learners: We use “sokat” when we do something often or we want to express a large quantity.
      For example:
      - I’ve been home a lot lately. (Sokat vagyok itthon mostanában.)
      - The dog drinks a lot. (Sokat iszik a kutya.)
If you want to say “sok”, that would be right like this:
      - I spend a lot of time at home lately. (Mostanában sok időt töltök itthon.)
      - The dog drinks a lot of water. (A kutya sok vizet iszik.)
      I hope I could help. :)

Thank you for the video! I also learn Hungarian for around 8 months and I am quite good at listening, because I am lucky to have Hungarian friends and colleagues, although I live in Austria (I am Russian tho, but anyway), and my speaking is ok, but I barely practice writing and I regret neglecting it, as well as I feel bad about not learning grammar thoroughly, like, from the book. I learn Hungarian like a child, just by listening, memorizing, repeating, analyzing and coming to conclusions about the usage of words based on the native speakers' speech. That was not my purpose to learn like this, I am just too lazy. But this week I have been thinking that I need to write in HU more, and pay more attention to the grammar. Your video kinda gave me even more enthusiasm and motivation ❤️ And your handwriting is just so beautiful, I join to the people writing here about it and say that your handwriting is absolutely fabulous even when it's just some side quick notes - it's still ahhhh... beautiful. So, I don't know if you'll see my comment (I hope you will 😁) but here's the problem : I am so motivated in speaking languages (russian for now) I know some of the basic words and phrases (and I wish one day I'll become fluent 🤩 but for now I'm very far from it) and I watched maybe a hundred of "language learning" videos (instead of studying, I watch videos who tell me how to study 🤣😂) and even if I watched a lot of those videos, I'm still confused, and a bit lost...
I bought a notebook to write things as you do inside, but I don't even know what to write and HOW to write (I mean, I don't know enough vocabulary and the russian's "déclinaisons" (sorry I don't know this word 😅) and a lot of other stuff which could help me at writing) I have a grammar book, I have a lot of language learning apps, and I even have a russian tandem partner (but as we're young and unexperienced it's quite difficult to teach each other). And with all of it, I feel like I'm more lost than at the beginning, so I don't know how to start...
The question is : could you, please, tell me what can I do ? I really need you 😅
Thank you and have a great day !! 😄😉I love what you're doing, keep going !!

It's amazing since I am trying to improve my writing skills as a way to activate my vocabulary. I have done a lot of comprehensible input, and although it is very effective to improve your listening comprehension, it is still not enough to allow you to speak freely and use the words you understand. As someone who self- studies languages, doing journals in Journaly for sure would improve my grammar, correct my bad habits (especially expressions that I'm sure i've been using incorrectly for yeeaaarrs), and activate my passive vocabulary. When I started posting my writing on sites like Journaly, it took me a surprisingly long time to embrace/get over the slight embarrassment that I felt whenever someone found half a dozen errors in just a few sentences of writing. I've always been complimented as a very good and eloquent writer in English and was basically the human form of Grammarly for my friends' writing, but suddenly I was writing in a language other than English, and I wasn't as good as I was used to being. I had to realize that the corrections obviously weren't directed at me as a person; these people just want to help me learn, and I put it up there so that they would do that. The point that I'm trying to make is that these mistakes and typos that you make and corrections that other people make will only help you get better, and you shouldn't get discouraged or embarrassed by them

This has reminded me that I always had a notebook for every language I was learning and did actual writing regularly. I've got so used to just passively reading and it's not enough

Great advice Lindie thanks for the informative video.
You know what I do is compile new words that I've recently learnt from content I listen to or read, then try to construct a story out of them. This is a very creative way of approaching writing in a foreign language as it enables to you develop the skill of creating sentences and familiarizing with the vocabulary you have learnt.

I think your approach is a very effective tool in learning most of the language in its context. This is what I call phase 1 in the language acquisition process.
Phase 2 is the speaking and conversion process which requires a different approach. Little studying and lots of practice. This is typically two years for full immersion.
Phase 3 is similar but it’s the understanding process. This process encompasses all of phase 1 and 2. In the additional understanding process this requires even more time. You will be increase your phonetic accustomization. (Understanding everyone who speaks colloquially) This process takes up to 3 to 4 years with total immersion. The two elements are watching tv and engaging with the community.
After all the phases are completed you will begin to think naturally in that language in some cases you’ll be more comfortable in that language than your native.

This is so helpful! I've been thinking of writing in my diary/journal in Japanese but I've been worried about the idea that I won't know every word or will forget a grammar point...it's so obvious now to just write the word in English and come back to it later! Instead of getting stuck and wasting time looking it up in the dictionary, I could just keep writing and stay in the flow. Looking things up after you're done writing and going back to correct is such a great idea. I don't know if I would want to rewrite the same thing I wrote before, but I'm sure it would still help me for the next journal entry I write.

Ah this is very helpful because I was just talking to my girlfriend about how I can understand complex texts in Portuguese (like big ass pol-sci books) but I have a very mediocre writing skill in said language. I wanna train that more and integrate it immediately to Korean (where I'm just a beginner) and avoid making the same mistake.
    Thank you Lindie!

I really like the logical method you implemented. I speak English and Hungarian fluently. It is kinda weird to see someone's struggle learning a language in reverse. Meant that my mothertongue is Hungarian, but I learned English at a very young age. 16. That is why I find your videos so fascinating. Thank you.

Hey!! I use the same method!! Its really helpful. Whenever I learn a grammar rule I use it in an essay and then check it. Whichever is wrong, I make more example sentences about it till it solidifies. Thanks for sharing your method!!!!

This is a brilliant idea oh my goodness I’m gonna start doing this immediately, but with my own twist! Your version is super in-depth lol. I can speak Italian just fine from a script, but I cannot remember things.. so maybe if I focus on writing my memory will improve and speaking will come next!
