    **CORRECTION** In the video I said that I was not sure about Thunderbolt on Mac Studio supporting high refresh rate. I was wrong. You CAN run high refresh rate screens from a thunderbolt port on the Mac Studio. But HDMI will still be locked to 60Hz.

    For actual pro users $2k-4k, depending on needs, is actually quite inexpensive (most pros the machine pays for itself in 1-7 days of work) and part of the reason why it’s inexpensive is because it doesn’t come bundled with things pros already have like monitors and input devices.

    Thank you for this great presentation. It sounds like the base version of the Mac Studio should be all I need then. I was going to go out and drop over $6,000 to get the high end version but if this entry level version can handle editing a few cameras, render a lot of FX and handle the 'Neat' Video really well then I will just go entry level. I also do a lot of movie film transferring (8mm, super 8, 16mm and 35mm). I use a program called 'NEAT VIDEO' that I use in post after transferring these films. It does require some pretty serious rendering. I've been using the 'trash can' older Mac Pro model for many years and bought it new and it really taxes that machine when rendering and takes forever. Anyway, thank you for all of your information. I think I am going to go now and save my self about 4 grand. Glad I found your RUclips post.

    Thanks! One question: Which monitor do you use in combination with the Mac Studio? Is it the LG 38". And in what scale/setting? Do you think it is good enough?

    • @dimediaatl
      @dimediaatl  2 года назад +1

      I am using LG 34inch 4K Panel (Model Number 32UN550) 60Hz. It's not high refresh & its not the absolute best display out there, but its a good display for the money with decent color accuracy (90% of the DCI-P3). I have had some light flickering with this display on Mac Studio (and previously on MacBook pro as well) I don't know what causes it and it does not bother me enough to invest the time and figure out. It only does so when it sits without use for a while, so I don't know what is going on. I have 2 other monitors like this that I use with PC's and I don't have those issues.

    Good review, but just a correction: Thunderbolt 4 supports up to 240hz. And so it works just fine on the Mac Studio (haven't seen anyone try 240hz, but plenty of 120 and 165hz) if you use the Thunderbolt port and not the HDMI 2.0. Btw, I completely agree that they should have just put in the HDMI 2.1 port in the first place, but oh well, I'll just use one of the 6 thunderbolt ports :P

    I plan to buy the entry-level M1 Max Mac Studio and just wanted to know if you think 32GB RAM is enough or if I should upgrade to 64GB. My computing needs are meagre - 4k Video editing, Some after effects/photoshop/illustration work and the usual stuff. do you think 32GB RAM is enough for my needs while also future-proofing me for the next several years?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @dimediaatl
      @dimediaatl  2 года назад

      Considering that these things are not user upgradable I would go ahead and get the 64GB version. However, that being said a friend of mine did get the 64gb version and did not see any crazy improvements over the 32gb version. But, also considering that the M1 platform is so new it might take some time for the developers to fully catch on and optimize software for it. So if you are looking to keep your computer for several years I would go ahead and get the most you can get.

    Hi, Great review! Keep it up!
    I have a question about the premiere pro on the mac studio.
    Recently, I received my Mac Studio base on M1 Max, 64gb, 1tb ssd.
    When I installed Premiere Pro 22.4,
    I can’t believe this, it’s really laggy!
    It’s only editing the 4:2:2 10bit 1080p 60fps. When I play in normal speed, It will delay 2 second by press the play button. If I try to play it on 2X times ,
    The sound is go on, but the screen and timeline was freezing.
    This is frustration…
    If you know something about it, please let me know. It’s appreciate.
    Good day! Keep it up!

      Hi Jason, I have been editing all kinds of footage on the mac studio and did not have those issues.
      Let me ask you this:
      1. Are you editing from an SSD or an HDD (Spinning Drive)?
      2. How much RAM memory did you allocate for premiere in the settings?
      3. Which camera is the footage coming from?
      I cant really pinpoint the problem before knowing more.
      Thanks for the comment!

    I don't agree with skipping out on paying for internal storage. Internal storage is much faster than anything you're going to be able to plug into it. Also, the Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports are slower than my 2016 Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports. Which is a big problem for this machine.

    • @dimediaatl
      @dimediaatl  2 года назад +1

      Soldered internal storage will always be faster than an external drive. There is no question about it. However, external storage is a LOT cheaper than internal upgrades from Apple. So, its up to the user to decide. As I said, for 90% of people Base Model is enough. However, if you are doing tasks like rotoscoping or heavy VFX work where keeping the project on an internal drive for rendering will yield faster results then, yes, go ahead and get 8TB of internal storage or whatever you need. However, my rule of thumb is to never keep anything on the system drive of a computer because computers crash and die. I have been working off of external SSD's and SSD RAID's for a long time and its my personal preference because if a computer crashes I can re-connect the drive to my other machine and get the job done vs tinkering and fixing my computer to recover the project. And I know, you can create backups etc, but most people forget. Computer is not a storage device. I wonder why the ports are slower though?

    • @BrianRodgersJr
      @BrianRodgersJr 2 года назад +1

      @@dimediaatl Honestly for most average consumers an M1 Mac Mini will do the job. Being that this machine is marketed towards creative professionals, I think it's a huge advantage to have much faster onboard storage to work on active projects, especially since the ports are slower than they should be. I have a fully configured M1 Ultra Mac Studio and have tested it pretty extensively. It's definitely a bummer when you spend money on external SSDs and the read and write speeds are 120MB/s to 200MB/s slower than the suggested speeds of any given drive.
      I used to work off of externals years ago, but it just wasn't sufficient. In recent years, I switched to working off of my internal drive for active projects and then keep a backup copy on a second external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. Yeah, I agree internal drives are not ideal for long terms storage, but can really make all the difference when it comes to getting active projects completed quicker.
      I completely understand that everyone's workflow is different though. To each his own. Cheers 🍻

    Any advice for someone who finds their Mac Studio to be struggling on even basic timelines in Premiere? Currently the Intel build is running faster. I often do Multicam 4k 30p but currently I'm just using a plain timeline and various sources (HEVC and H264) from DJI and Sony. Geekbench benchmark scores are typical. The gulf between what RUclipsrs are experiencing and what I'm experiencing has me wondering if I have a hardware defect.

    • @dimediaatl
      @dimediaatl  2 года назад +1

      Hmmmm...That is interesting indeed. Couple of thoughts:
      1. Make sure that you are using the version of Premiere that is optimized for M1 (I think almost all, if not all Adobe programs have been ported over)
      2. Make sure that you are editing from an SSD (Either internal or External) but make sure its an SSD (4K editing off of a regular spinning drive wont suffice these days)
      3. DJI Footage can cause issues sometimes, but I never had any issues with it on Mac Studio.
      4. Lastly make sure that you are not running a bunch of programs in the background (that stuff can really slow a machine down, even as powerful as an M1)
      Hope this helps. Let me know what you ended up doing if the situation has been resolved!

    hi there . Thanks for this. I know that FCP X is more optimized for the M1 chips but I prefer to edit with Premiere Pro-I don't feel like changing and I know that Adobe has been slow optimizing its apps for the M1 chip. Has Adobe finally for real optimized Premiere for M1? Are you using Premiere v22.3? the latest one? I want to get a M1max base version (can't afford the Ultra!) as long as Premiere and After effects are really using the chip's power...even if Adobe never gets to the same speed as FCPX. AMD, nVidia and Intel will have no choice but to follow Apple's move into hardware integration and away from modularity. Power usage and heat dissipation problems in portable devices will leave them no choice.

    • @dimediaatl
      @dimediaatl  2 года назад

      We will see. I think especially in the case of intel and AMD, Apple is definitely giving them a run for their money. However, especially in the gaming community there will always be a need for modularity and expandability/customization. To what degree that will be altered remains to be seen. Needless to say those companies still beat Apple when it comes to gaming hands down.
