We use leaf mulch made from last year’s leaves to top off the garden in PA. No harm for that to be mixed in. Also straw and other materials can be used.
Morning Jeff! I have 6 new raised and need to purchase preferably organic soil to purchase for my beds and wanted to see who you recommend here in San Diego to purchase from? I live in the Poway area.
Hi Jeff…San Diego gardener here. Can I just prep the beds this time of year and leave it be until next spring without planting anything? I did cover crops last year, but they took over…not doing that again.
You can, but cool season gardening is great! Fewer pests & disease, and there are lots of things you can grow. Don't let it dry out if you do let it sit.
A tool that changed my relationship with soil is the gardening fork. Better than a shovel for aeration and digging deep! I've got silty soil that behaves like clay. Plant by plant, everyone is a rookie.
My Weather is the same as yours! We’re down in the 50s one week and then the next week like right now we’re in the 80s.
It's crazy! This week has almost 30 degree swings every day. 80+ is pretty dang hot for these little winter crops
11:08 Yes! I slowed down the video and counted the granules. Exactly one and three-quarters cups. :)
sock pull up is very important. Excellent work Jeff!
Gotta dress for the job you want!
Thanks. Some good tips all the way through. I need to get moving!
This video was SO helpful and right on time. Only a couple weeks to start my fall garden! Thank you ☺️
😂😂😂 that opening. The gunslinger at high noon pulling up his gardener’s socks and getting ready to work. You’re wonderfully surprising.
🔫 pew pew water the plants pew pew
😊. You’re only on #3 and so informative……Central Florida 9b
Thanks for taking the time to do this video!
Jeff redefines shoulder season: when you don't know if it's flannel or tank top weather tomorrow. Shoulders in or out? Nobody knows in Zone 9 & 10.
It's going to be some serious show shoulder season this week with 80+ temps!
Great info. Thank you so much San Diego Seed Company.
This is awesome. I plan to redo an area this afternoon. Your timing was perfect for me. Thank you so much
❤️🙃 Great info
Thanks guys! Great way to break things up into tasks, good info.
Haha, nice intro!
Does straw mulch need to be removed? Good video.
With straw, we still try to get most of it scraped off the top, but we don't worry about getting it all. It'll likely break down within 6-12 months.

Yes, great point!
I made an almost identical list this morning. You wanna come over and help? 😅 Lots to do!
Aw dang. Missed it. Maybe next time! Haha

I'd definitely check out Walter Andersen's! Ramona might have good options to get a scoop loaded into a truck too.

That was definitely 1 3/4 cups 😉
Right on the money!
Are the Crocs optional or nah?
Oh yeah! Wearing Crocs is actually the real step 1 :P
Grateful for this video. I’m a rookie gardener and didn’t know half of these steps. Fellow SoCaler and Zone 9b student 🪴
Glad to have you here!

Board shorts, flip flops, flannel. Let the shoulders out every now and again 🤣
