Started watching your videos, started sewing because of you. You stopped making videos...I stopped tailoring. But...you are back...so I'm going to start again. I can't listen to anyone else. They are boring. Glad you are back. And glad you are more emotionally involved. We missed your energy.
I'm 5'6" with a 45" chest and 33" waist. I've needed to round this learning curve for some time. Your videos have me here with straight pins and marking chalk. I'm making it happen. Thanks
I’d just like to say, having only today come across your channel, that your videos are brilliant. I’ve been sewing for years but have learnt a lot from binge-watching your videos today. Also, I think it’s fantastic that you actually answer people’s questions - so few RUclipsrs bother to do that. Thank you so much for making and sharing these.
Your videos make me wish I hadn't got rid of so much of my wardrobe cause I could have updated so much and saved myself a lot of money and had my clothes fit great !
Also highly recommend reading the documentation for your machine. My machine in particular has a setting that is considered optimal for sewing darts according to the manufacturer.
SD, this was exactly what I needed! You made it so easy. Everybody else shows how to do it on a pattern but that doesn't help with altering what's already made. Tysm!!
I’m a chick, I still use this tutorial. I have broad shoulder and hip but narrow waist and I’m tall with a long torso and absolutely nothing in my life has ever fit me correctly without tailoring. This method is a lot way than my previous method of trying to pin the fabric to fit me on my own and struggling for ages.
Hey SD! I used to pin exactly like you. Than I found out, that if I pin those pins perpendicularly to the stitchline, I can actually sew over them and not worry about the machine (not that I do it, but sometimes it’s handy or I just forget about a pin or two).
Thank you! I am fixing my own sequence top for an evening out (luckily it’s plain fabric in the back). I grew up sewing but haven’t touched my machine much in 25 years. 🧵
I’ll have to try this on the dress shirts I have already tailored. I did add darts to a nice motorcycle jacket that there was no way I could see to take in the sides, and it acme out really nice, saved me a lot of money not having to buy a new jacket after I lost 40 lbs.
Thanks SD! I’ve been at this weight for a little over two years. I gained a bunch of weight after getting out of the Army, then about three years ago decided enough was enough and started running and eating better again.
Excellent. I used to love to sew, but stopped for many years. After I received some old classic rock & roll tees they were boxy so I came across your videos and now I’m rocking they with a sexy fit.
Man, I've been subscribed to you from the start and I gotta say, you have to be one of the most underrated RUclipsrs out there. Your content is so helpful and you're just wonderful with the delivery as well. Keep up the great work!
Hey thank you so much! I super appreciate the kind words, and that you've been here so long! You definitely were here for the poor editing that's for sure haha!
I so needed this video! I only look and feel good in fitted shirts and they're hard to find. I have no sewing skills at all but your video makes it sound so easy. Now the only problem is: I don't own a sewing machine. I don't think one should hand sew a dart.
Awesome content. I'm a taller thin guy. Even an extreme slim fit needs to be taken in in the waist area. Thanks to some time in the gym, I can no longer take in some shirts at the side because the shirt will open. My only option is darts. I've tried before but they came out weird and ugly. Your demonstration was great. I'm looking forward to trying it out soon
Dude you make really make this so manageable, I've seen some dart tutorials but they seemed hard to do and i never really tried but now I'll give it a shot. Thanks to you i look great on my clothes!
I still like sewing right off the edge for my darts and not backstitching. Otherwise I always have that little blump at the end (ick). And yes, it's a word if I say it is.
Seems simple enough, just too timid to try. I got some baggy shirts but if I can master this down, any large shirt at goodwill will be able to fit me haha
Do darts affect (effect?) the fit of the shirt?? what I mean to say is... when taking in a shirt at the side seams, should I leave room to account for darts? Does that make sense?
It absolutely makes sense, and yes you want to account for the darts at the beginning of the project. By that I mean be a bit loose with those side seams since you’re gonna make the fit perfect with darts at the the end. Reach out with any questions!
Nice video my guy! A thought are going to do a "how to slim the waist of your trousers" video as that would be interesting and relevant to most people, again just a thought. Stay safe!
This will take 17 minutes you say? Me: Been sitting here for the past hour 'n half to make sure it fits decently. But alas here we are, it's done. And it's beautiful.

Hello. I just found your channel and just in time to take in my sleeves on my new shirt. The sleeves are too puffy and my question is: Do I start taking in my sleeves at the armpit and taper down to the cuff? Love your videos.
Hi StylishD. Thx for the dart tutorial. Very useful (I too am more V-shaped than average). I was wandering though, is it exactly the same technique/measurements for short sleeve summer shirts? Those that you let loose and do not tuck in the pants? Are there variations for the different shirt bottom endings (flat, rounded in the back, rounded in back+front...). Thx very much. Summer almost over, but there's still time to look good ;-)
Don't mind my questions as I'm a complete newb at this, however, I am wondering... if you add darts after taking in the shirt, could that make the shirt too snug? If I want to take in a shirt X inches, would it not be correct to divide that amount between the darts and side seams?
Hello D! The seam at the shoulder/armpit that dont fit proper in the armpit because its too big, can you do anything about that? or is that shirt too big to alter due the seam going more up to the arm and not in the armpit where its supposed to be. Thank you!
@@StylishDTailors actually i solved the problem after alot of testing. forget that the chest area were larger/longer on this tshirt, so i needed to alter some extra fabric there vs the fabric on the sides underneath the chest. I like the straight look, not the taper on me due to large hipbones. Not even large lats help that much. Because of that it makes it a little harder to measure 100% in a straight line. Before i just took off for example 2cm on each side. Now i need to take of more at the chest and a little less uderneath, i like it kinda tight at chest and more loose on stomach area.
Great vid SD! I've been tailoring my shirts for 5 or so years and darts were the one thing that gave me the most trouble at first. This is a great tutorial. Anyway, I noticed a long time ago when looking at most of my custom made shirts that the darts are widest in the middle of the back and tapers off both at the top and bottom. I find that this gives a better result for both comfort and fit since the shirt drapes better below your waist. Try this out and let me know!
