The Sequoia is missing a unique interior, an automatic AWD system, an independent rear suspension and an uncompromised third row and cargo area. Quite disappointing overall. What I found really silly was that powered third row yet it doesn’t fold flat👎🏽and it doesn’t come out for more space if you’re carrying smth larger👎🏽……….and that stupid flap to make it flat but raises the load floor up 8-9 inches defeats the point of a flat floor since it cuts a third of the height down!😳🤦🏽♂️
I agree. There are a number of interviews where the Toyota chief truck engineer stated he had to make design compromises in order to get a new Sequoia approved as annual sales were less than 10,000 . Buyers will have to decide whether the compromises were too much. The one question nobody has answered is why the hybrid battery ended up under the third row instead of the second. Since the 2nd row is fixed, it seems that would have been a better location for the battery and improved the third row's usefulness.
@@NelsonGasparDrives well to be fair it's under the second row on the Tundra. My feeling is that the design criteria didnt allow for it due to optional captains chairs or similar second row folding/third row access necessity.

Toyota could care less about the Sequoia and it shows. Less interior space for passengers, going back to a solid rear axle, and pretty much non-existent cargo space with the 3rd row. And the price is way too high for the reduced functionality. It's basically a 4Runner with a 3rd row. People like me with a 1st and 2nd gen Sequoia are now looking at Tahoes because the 3rd gen is useless for a family.

Yes you are absolutely correct. This is a 4-5 passenger utility vehicle not a 7 or 8. It should been designed to carry all the passengers and their stuff. That’s the point of a big SUV from a non luxury brand. To carry 7-8 people and all their stuff from or to the airport, carry all the groceries, or big shopping trips. I’m not sure what the designers were thinking making such a small cargo space. This should have been the 4Runner instead. Hopefully they make an XL version to enlarge the cargo area because if not many customers may look else where. I do appreciate the hybrid design but not if it raises prices super high and reduces cargo space. It’s actually embarrassing. You show off your big SUV to friends and family and you can’t use it to go shopping or to the airport with everyone. They just have to stay behind and only 3 people can come along because you have fold the seats down. lol what is that
I really don’t understand the 3rd row compromise here. They made a fixed (not removable) 3rd row, but a tiny one. And then they completely compromised on useable cargo space in the back. Where would you put a full size dog? A jogger? Pick a lane! If you’re going to ruing the cargo space, make a GREAT 3rd row. If you’re going to make a TINY 3rd tow, make the cargo space GREAT. It’s just a complete design failure beyond the front seats.
unlike previous gen, this sequoia is basically land cruiser 300 with a part time transfer case and different body part. it's not designed from the ground up as claimed and the cruiser is always smaller american full size trucks to meet international market.
Yup. And forget about getting in the back with the bench middle row with car seats in it. Killed it as an option for our large family that had towing needs.
You do a great job covering vehicle details, so opinion wise on looks: the Tundra could use a body-color bar across the lower grill like the sequoyah to break it up a bit. That beam could be structural too and be a good mounting point for front tow hooks for TRD models later on.

Hopefully Toyota will offer a Sequoia SR5 TRD off-road with a middle bench seat and a rear seat delete to be a better camping vehicle. Or as you mention - carrying tools in an enclosed vehicle - without paying for an unneeded rear seat.
The sequoia has all of that other than the rear seat delete due to seat covering/protecting the battery, although I don't doubt there will be aftermarket options to fix that problem.
Just went to order a Tundra and found out that (here in Canada) you can long get the long(er) bed hybrid in the Ltd model. All other trucks have short bed only. Why has no one ever mentioned this on any of the reviews?
Stephen, If I can't get a Hybrid Tundra with an 8 foot bed, I am prepared to compromise with a TRD Off - Road Sequoia and utility trailer 😁 Hopefully the TNGA-F Truck platform is the last time Toyota shrinks the interior of their vehicles. It has been a major problem with nearly every TNGA debut.
How did Toyota create and pass that back leg and headroom! Complete fail, a huge percentage of adult sized rear occupants would get knocked out by hitting there head on that rear cross member.
The new Sequoia's wheel base should have been increased to match it's increased towing capacity. The trailer/camper's weight doesn't matter if it's too long. 23 feet is about as long a RV you can tow safely.
Gotta love the middle row knock out beam on that Sequoia. Did Toyota engineering taken a permanent vacation for this generation of full size trucks? No recovery hooks. This knock out beam... well done Toyota.
Great video guys. You forgot to mention a huge plus to the Pickup vs SUV….toys. I love not needing a trailer for my ATV, kids dirt bike, canoe, Motorcycle etc.
The Sequoia looks nice outside but I hate the interior space. That 3rd row takes up all the trunk space and limited headroom/legroom for passengers. All those seats and nowhere to put everyone's stuff.
To me the biggest downside the Sequoia has is it don't seem like the seats fold flat enough to carry a mattress or something if you want to sleep in it while camping. They both seem to have great power numbers and I like the looks of both.
You can thank the solid rear axle for that. Had Toyota spent the money to engineer an IRS for the Sequoia, the seats would’ve been able to actually fold down into the floor.
The Sequia looks better with the solid body color bar between the bumper and grill, although this model Tundra isn't as bad as some of the others as it has a body color grill surround. I would probably take the Tundra although the Sequia would be nice as it would fit in my garage being over a foot shorter.
I’ll start by saying … I am huge Toyota fanboy. Nevertheless, Tundra takes the cake despite the Sequoia looking better. When I compare to the Ford or GMC, the Sequoia’s reduced third row space and the lack of the 4auto are enough to make me choose a vehicle that is perhaps less reliable, but definitely more feature packed
The less reliable part is a outdated perception of the brands btw. Also, the Yukon has better resale value as well. It was even named KBB’s Best Full-size SUV resale value in 2021, _not_ the Toyota or the Ford.
As a 4 runner owner. I am pro having the SUV style . However the sequoia seats do not lay flat. I legit have transported couches in the 4 runner. They need to make a full size SUV that can have an enclosed full sized “truck” bed but can have 2 rows of seats as well. Maybe you can take the seats out. I have taken out second row bottoms, that is an extremely quick 4 bolts. At 65-70k you should able to have the best of both worlds. Not sure this exists in any car brand but it should.
Love the Tundra/Sequoia but I gotta go with the truck. We have way more stuff than people and while I've never towed anything, the bed just has so much more utility. Now if I can just find a Platinum Hybrid at MSRP...
Truck! I had the sequoia back in 2004, loved it pretty rummy. But for me I’m not hailing a big family anymore and truck is good for a few people. And for height?! Well we are Mexican, we are not tall. Lol
That Sequoia Looks Popular Because It Looks Like A Family Tripper. The Tundra Looks Good Also Because Of Them 22 Inch Wheels Along With The Sequoia The Capstone Is Super Expensive Around 78 Gran 🇺🇸.
In the Sequoia, you can also haul stuff that's taller or you don't want in the interior by simply renting a trailer from Uhaul, especially if hauling things like manure isn't an everyday activity. So you get a people and stuff hauler, best of both worlds.
Well a Tundra could do the same right? Could even haul taller items given the bed has no natural height limit, and it can also tow a Uhaul if needed for those messy jobs.
@@ALMX5DP Yes but it's still limited as a people hauler which makes the Sequoia more versatile in that way if it can still do Tundra things - just as a response to the video's haul stuff vs haul people argument.

Thank you for the insightful video. Aesthetically, the larger grille of the Tundra says it wants to eat you alive. The horizontal insert design makes it more ostentatious. Frankly, I prefer the look of the TRD Pro Tundra with its more subdued grille color and design. Looks aside, as a potential camper trailer tow vehicle for me and wife only, the Tundra is the hands down winner. It has a better tow and payload capacity, longer wheelbase for stability. Things that do NOT belong inside the passenger cabin (i.e., generator, muddy equipment, fuel canisters, etc.) can stay in the bed. As for "locking things away in the vehicle," remember, the windows and vehicle locks keep only the honest people away. Thieves will break in no matter what. Moreover, let's not forget that this truck has a crew cab, and that this is a full-sized truck. There is plenty of space in the rear passenger area for luggage, store purchases, or other items. Plus a tonneau cover is still an option that can either enclose the rear bed or be retracted for transporting tall items like furniture or refrigerators. Bottom line, everyone has ones reasons for choosing one over the other. However, the Sequoia's extra weight, poor rear passenger headroom, and lack of versatility for our needs clearly makes the Tundra more appealing for us.
Hey guys, if you have the opportunity to test it, it would be nice to have a lower trim of the Sequoia on the channel, e.g. an SR5 with the TRD off-road or sport package, because everybody else is reviewing platinum or capstone (guess Toyota really wants to show off).
Can an 8 foot 2x4 or 2x6 fit inside the Sequoia? How about 4 bundles of Rockwool insulation or a child off to college? I was able to do all that in my Chrysler Pacifica and stll close the door. And when not doing that haul a family of five with Dometic and luggage from Wisconsin to Banff.
The only reason why I might go for Tundra is an ability to tow a smaller fifth wheel RV trailer. I don't know if it's capable of it though, didn't check. But I"m planning to get one or another just so I can tow a larger RV trailer.
I own a 2019 Tundra SR5 with an XP package. It has everything I need/want plus some creature comfort I've added after market. I wouldn't mind trading it in for a Sequoia; however, pricing these days is prohibited.
Well they are "maximum" for a reason. I find no qualms in how they are rated or advertised as I know my needs and how each weight plays it's role in getting there.
It would be wise for Toyota to consider making a long wheelbase Sequoia that'll address the 3rd row and cargo deficiencies. I honestly thought that would be the case based on the teaser shots first released of the D-pillar. I could tell right away that there just wasn't going to be enough room.
Why would the third row not fold flat. My wife's expedition El folds completely flat, and if you fold the middle seats it's entirely flat all the way to the front seats. Even our 2012 armada has that feature.
yeah i'll stick to my first gen Sequoia...ridiculously reliable proven V8 with a stupid amount of space and get this...REVOLUTIONARY fully removable 3rd row WITHOUT any horrendous welds and bumps getting in the way of anything you put in it.
After seeing this, I am very glad we purchased a 2021 Suburban for our family. This looks like Toyota totally missed what the large SUV is supposed to be.
I don’t know what Toyota was thinking when they left the solid axle in the rear of the Sequoia. It doesn’t ride as well as an IRS, and it takes up a lot of room that would allow the rear seats to fold down into the floor. Even GM finally got rid of the solid rear axle in their full size body-on-frame SUVs. And before anybody says “it’s better for off-roading,” NOBODY is going to take their 70k SUV of this type off road to the extent that it would even make a difference. This isn’t a 392 Rubicon or a Bronco Raptor.
A lot. Of. Issues. Axle coming apart. Tech freezing Bumpers coming apart Exterior Door handle falling off. Interior door handles squeaking Arm rest not fitting correctly Turbos failing Check engine lights for no reason Parking sensor issues Glad I kept my 5.7.
The Big issue not mentioned is In Ontario - Commercial vehicle vs. None Commercial. Pickup truck's are Commercial so need to license accordingly. You have any tools in a Pickup truck and you go to work on construction site then you need a annual inspection, then anything you tow needs a annual sticker except RVs. Ontario most complicated for registration of any Pickup Trucks!!! A Sequoia is personal vehicle. Black vs.Blue plates. This is why Pickup stickers are on front - Commercial You advertise business name on Pickup then you need annual inspection, Insurance is more also. MTO make it complicated!!!
So we’re you driving an American capstone sequoia …because it had the AVS? And you said that is only available on the platinum in Canada… thanks for testing your size in those seats, odd move by Toyota to be going smaller for 2nd/3rd row
The Sequoia grill is far superior to the Tundra. The Tundra front end is just hidious. Has been and always will be. Also, $78,000 for the new Sequoia is insanity. Personally, I would buy a used Sequoia if I needed the space since they are the exact same size as the out going model. I just looked up on cargurus a 2019 Limited 4WD Sequoia for $47,350. That's $40,000 less than the new Sequoia. Even with the poor mpg, you would have to drive hundreds of thousands of miles to even break even on the entry cost of the new SUV. Remember, these are people haulers getting to point A to point B. The old model is old but it does the job. Save the money.
Sequoia front-end looks the best. However, the Tundra Capstone looks 100% better when the grille surround is painted the same as the body color vs the metal color for all other trims. At a minimum, the Platinum, 1794 and TRD Pro should also have the body color grille surround as a standard feature. What is keeping me from replacing my '21 Tundra with a '22 or even a '23 Tundra and my wife's '21 4Runner with a '23 Sequoia are things like the grille surround color as well as what you showed with the 2nd row headroom issues caused by the panoramic roof. Just refuse to settle for these (and others like no tow hooks and more) shortcomings.
I love you guys and agree with you most of the time. But the comment about having a truck cap over your bed being equivalent to having an SUV is absolutely ridiculous. Come on, guys.
The '23 Sequoia is a packaging disaster. To illustrate just how poorly the interior packaging and layout was designed, the Hyundai Palisade which is a midsized SUV matches the cargo room of the Sequoia with the second and rear seats folded.
The Sequoia Capstone you see in this video was a pre-production unit that did have AVS. This will not be available in this configuration in Canada as a production model. But we had it for the video.

The only reason why I might go for Tundra is an ability to tow a smaller fifth wheel RV trailer. I don't know if it's capable of it though, didn't check. But I"m planning to get one or another just so I can tow a larger RV trailer.
the only question is when can we buy it?? heard toyota dealer is not opening for any reservation any more for this suv.
My wife and I are getting both of them in capstone
sorry to hear
I love that both of these have tow mirrors. 😍
I do not want the back seats. I want to be able to remove them and the second row. Is this an option?
Best Duo on You tube!
I own a 2019 Tundra SR5 with an XP package. It has everything I need/want plus some creature comfort I've added after market. I wouldn't mind trading it in for a Sequoia; however, pricing these days is prohibited.
@Truck King , here you go
Are the rear/middle seats limited on rear space/adjustability because of the hybrid battery location?
Sequoia is the better looking one, but both very nice.
Hey Truck King!! Sorry I'm late...back to double shifts again.. we've been busy
The tundra looks awesome!.i dont really understand what the Sequoia is for or where it fits in(2023/24) in Toyota's line up???
The maximum tow ratings on these half tons are not realistic when you factor in the payload!
Well they are "maximum" for a reason. I find no qualms in how they are rated or advertised as I know my needs and how each weight plays it's role in getting there.
These vehicles seem like half ass efforts at updating ancient platforms. How does a full size suv LOSE rear legroom?? How did that get past QC?
New Tundra looks so much better than the previous two gens, my 2022 Tacoma is taller than the first gen full-size Tundra!
Your first question: the Sequoia front looks way better!
Notice much wind noise from the tow mirrors in the Sequoia??
no
It would be wise for Toyota to consider making a long wheelbase Sequoia that'll address the 3rd row and cargo deficiencies. I honestly thought that would be the case based on the teaser shots first released of the D-pillar. I could tell right away that there just wasn't going to be enough room.
They should get rid of hybrid and do the v6tt for the third row to run flat and not as high.
If Toyota adds the 25” back to the Sequoia to match the Tundra length, third raw and cargo space will be marvelous.
Why would the third row not fold flat. My wife's expedition El folds completely flat, and if you fold the middle seats it's entirely flat all the way to the front seats. Even our 2012 armada has that feature.
Once they fix the turbo issue, I am gonna get one.. prob 2024 or 2025... needs front hooks too
Great Video 👍🏻 Quick question Where can I see the Sequoia in person in Ontario ??
They are late arriving. Hopefully soon.
@@TruckKing any place that I can see it now ??
I’ll take the Tundra with The sequoia front end. Thank you ! The way it should’ve looked…..
You can't even use that third row, man Toyota failed so hard with these.
Can't afford either one but nice video anyway.
Sequoia looks better less huge grill, both need lots of plastic trimmed off and bumpers and skids.
They should of made those seats 2nd row , just like there vans. Adjustable forward and backwards
No one puts stuff in their beds. Especially at these prices.
yeah i'll stick to my first gen Sequoia...ridiculously reliable proven V8 with a stupid amount of space and get this...REVOLUTIONARY fully removable 3rd row WITHOUT any horrendous welds and bumps getting in the way of anything you put in it.
Looks big from the outside but small on the inside.
I test drove the new tundra and interior is smaller than my 2020 tundra. Shame.
Every new Toyota in the last 4 years has a shrunken interior. This trend needs to end!
Dam that length deference should be a xl version.
I WANT THAT SEQUOIA ASAP!!
Trunk space on sequoia looks stupid why bother buying a large truck with a trunk size of an escort?
Question: how can they be the same chassis if they are different wheel base
If only the 3rd row can be removed it would be perfect. The 2022 Tundra has a lot of issues.
Get a screwdriver and some wrenches out, and I'm sure it's possible to remove the third row.
A lot. Of. Issues.
Axle coming apart.
Tech freezing
Bumpers coming apart
Exterior Door handle falling off.
Interior door handles squeaking
Arm rest not fitting correctly
Turbos failing
Check engine lights for no reason
Parking sensor issues
Glad I kept my 5.7.
@@americandude3825 I mean it’s not like older Toyotas didn’t have any recalls, TSBs or issues..
@@ALMX5DP agreed.
This is why Pickup stickers are on front - Commercial
You advertise business name on Pickup then you need annual inspection, Insurance is more also.
MTO make it complicated!!!
Yes, you’re right. Our licensing is so out of date. We have to push our politicians to amend the rules.
So we’re you driving an American capstone sequoia …because it had the AVS? And you said that is only available on the platinum in Canada… thanks for testing your size in those seats, odd move by Toyota to be going smaller for 2nd/3rd row
The model we drove in the video is actually pre-production. But it will not be sold like this in Canada, only in the US.
is it the same suspension?
Sequoia. How often do SUV’s go BACK to a solid axle and offer MORE off road performance!? It’ll be a good replacement for the LC300 we didn’t get.
Just wish there was a 2 row option. oh well
Sequoia front-end looks the best.
That second row has got to be deadly for accidents if your tall.
I don't know... If I had to make a choice between the Tundra and Sequoia, I'd go for the Tundra regardless of what I need it for.
I have had 8 Toyotas in my life but now I am switching to Hyundai Palisade. I need the cargo behind the second row.
Front end on the sequoia all the way🇨🇦👍🏻
Awesome Cape Town South Africa
I love you guys and agree with you most of the time. But the comment about having a truck cap over your bed being equivalent to having an SUV is absolutely ridiculous. Come on, guys.
It depends on the size of the pickup bed.
The better its to have both!!!
I’d get both!
The '23 Sequoia is a packaging disaster. To illustrate just how poorly the interior packaging and layout was designed, the Hyundai Palisade which is a midsized SUV matches the cargo room of the Sequoia with the second and rear seats folded.
Steve looks like he’s sitting on a squatty potty in that third row seat. Lol
too bad there's no option to delete that 3rd row in the Sequoia. I need a work rig, not a school bus.
The sequoia looks a lot better
Sequoia front end looks significantly better.
I like to see you put a ATV or snowmobile in back of your SUV. LOL Truck best tool in the tool box.
Headrests remind me of Wall-E
If the Sequoia Capstone didn't have AVS you would not be able to have the Sport S+ drive mode. Please check your facts.
The Sequoia Capstone you see in this video was a pre-production unit that did have AVS.
This will not be available in this configuration in Canada as a production model. But we had it for the video.
Please tell Toyota that their tundra grill is ugly.
