Why Was Bonneville Speed Week 2022 Cancelled?

- This video will answer the question on why the Bonneville Speed Week 2022 was canceled this year. It is sad to see such an effort put in by everybody from the SCTA (Southern California Timing Association), the racers, and the fans that came in from far and wide. But in this video I show some of the things you can see even if the race/event is not going on. I travel into the town of Wendover looking for cool cars that are in town for the event.
Also in this video I re posted a "Throwback Thursday" video of the 2021 Bonneville Speed Week event because I'm sure everyone (including myself) is dissappointed and about the cancelation of the race/event and would like to just see some cars going down the 5 mile salt track. So I'm hopefully filling that void and I'm hoping you really enjoy this video I put together. Thanks, TomEighty

Great video. My family and car club go every year to the flats, we camp on the bend. This year was so sad. We were up to our ankles in salty mud. We still partied Friday night but rain all night waking up Saturday with a wet tent inside, we packed up and went home. It was definitely one for the books, cool experience. My wife's 55 bel air and my 63 Impala were slipping and a sliding on the mud but we got out, no towing needed. Ha ha We will be back next year!! And hope you will also.

Thanks Phillip, I have been excited about this almost all year so yes that was a disappointment but just being out there was awesome so that kind of made up for it. Just wish I could have take more video of cool stuff! Thanks for watching buddy 👍

Thanks buddy, but I still really had a good time. Doing long road trips are almost half the fun of doing this job. ha ha.

Love speedweek. We went in 2009. Rented a motorhome in Salt Lake City and spent five days on the salt. Can't wait to get back there.

Hey Tom I hear the salt is disappearing at Bonneville and I hear they going to shorten the course because of that, Is their truth to that?
Yes, I guess back in the 1960's the salt use to be 3 feet thick in some areas and now it is about 2 inches thick. Basically mining companies have been taking a lot of the salt and processing it and not returning any of the by product back onto the flats. There is an unitive just this year to start working on getting the salt pumped back in there from other areas on the Salt Flats to build it back up during the wet seasons. So it is good there is a game plan to fix the issue.
Been donating since 2000 to get this replenishment done. Not sure where the money goes, just lawyers I guess. It was bad back then. I went 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007. Hope there's something left when I get back there!!!!! Thanks for the coverage Tom!!!!! Sooooooooo appreciated 👍
@@tomeighty hopefully it works because that is hollowed ground as far as I'm concerned and even though I might be gone by then I'd love for generation's from now to be able to enjoy the salt flats
@@tomeighty The salt crust has been less than 1" inch now for a few years. The pumping program that was supposed to replenish the salt content on the flats from Intrepid Mining tailing ponds did the exact opposite to what the BLM & the mining company said it would do. The depleted salt tailings from the mine diluted the existing salt on the flats allowing Intrepid to increase it's yield & thus accelerating the salt loss rate from Bonneville. The BLM (Bureau of Land Mismanagement) who are the custodian of Bonneville, receive $$Millions in mining rights from Intrepid every year & have adopted a deceptive & out & out lying strategy to protect their own financial interest. BONNEVILLE IS DYING & it's on it's last legs right now.
Slurry Mining is basically Strip Mining with water. Everything that was & is on Bonneville is either flowed off the surface through canals to the mine or pumped up from the water table & flowed to the mine. It's like filling your bathtub with salt & leaving the plug out then turning on the water.
Even Lake Gairdner, in South Australia had some flooding that caused the cancellation of 2022 Speed Week by Dry Lakes Racers Australia (DLRA), but most years it’s pretty predictable. Same with Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Overall, I think the southern hemisphere might be the place to go to break records these days.
