"What the hell are you talking about huh? How do you know that!?" Great edit 👌 haha
Totally appreciate the description of and insights on the film! I haven’t seen it but when I saw Criterion was releasing it on 4K I really wanted to know more about it. Good to know the history and place in De Palma’s catalogue. Will absolutely check this out.
Top video guys didn't know your on Spotify going to be diving on them too keep up the good work
Thanks, Mark!
Blow Out is a great film. I own the Arrow steelbook so I probably wouldn't buy it again. Also worth watching Blow Up (1966) starring David Hemmings, it's on RUclips. I think Scarface is my all-time favourite De Palma film, Vice City the movie.
Great old movie. Brian De Palma was married to Nancy Allen 1979-1984
can you discuss the quality of the transfer next time. Thanks
Carlito's Way. It's so good you forget/want to forget you already saw the ending in the beginning.
Never saw it 😉
I love the intro to this movie it's fun and clever.
I really wanna finish watching Coed Frenzy too 🔥🔥
I would love The Fury to get a 4k someday
Great video! We recently did a video on Body Double you might appreciate. Keep it up - hope you do more De Palma.
Cannot wait to see this one... Wasn't on my radar at all until the release was announced and you guys covered it initially with praise.
I bought it after we were done talking. It's coming in today, so hopefully we can do an update soon.
I already have the criterion blu so Im on the fence. Yes it's a great film and so are Scarface, Body Double, Carlitos Way Dressed to Kill and The Untouchables etc etc
His run up until say Mission Impossible is one of the greatest directorial runs of all-time in my opinion. Carpenter, Dante, and a few others I put in this category also.
Picking it up, but I am broke, so gotta wait 🙂
Lithgow was also a crazy person in Cliffhanger!
I never liked Footloose, never saw 3rd Rock... outside of Harry and the Hendersons, growing up I always saw him more typecast as a psycho. Good call on Cliffhanger, Renny Harlin isn't perfect but he's ultimately underrated in my book.
Great Video guys... Love the Ricochet shot out by Russ I was totally thinking that as Matt was talking about Lithgow... That's a movie that needs at least a Blu-ray if not a 4k. I have Blowout already from Criterion on Blu-ray I'm tempted to upgrade but there is just so much shit coming out I want to get.
Ricochet is in my top 5 4K release wishes, it's so ridiculously over the top while still feeling like a competent late 80s/early 90s action/revenge film. It's like Roadhouse without the warmth.
And I'm with you on Blow Out. I will definitely upgrade, but having the initial blu already will hold me over until the Amazon Criterion Sale in July.
@@russceasetheruss5360 for sure I agree with that 100%. It's a warner Brothers studio license from what I can tell so I'm hoping for a UK Arrow Release. That and Strange days would be awesome releases.
@@Captmorgan4101 I still, to this day, have never seen Strange Days. I need to make a list of what I see through the comments. I may watch that tonight. Point Break NEEDS a 4K as well, speaking of Bigelow.
@@russceasetheruss5360 yeah man Kino has all this shit coming out I will wait on sale as well. Did you ever get around to watching out of the blue.? You or Matt. Just curious about your take on it.
Honestly, I always felt like it was the skeeziness that gave De Palma’s films their…charm? They had that sultry, neo noir, grimy 80s feel that eventually faded away when he decided to go more commercial. Sadly, as far as I’m concerned, there isn’t a really good De Palma film, post Mission: Impossible. But I will say that first one-take tracking shot in Snake Eyes is impressive-even if the movie itself is complete nonsense, in my opinion. Great video, as always-can’t wait for the eventual BR/4K comparison showdown!
It’s on the wishlist. I have the Blu-ray and it’s an incredible film. Not sure it was mentioned but Nancy Allen was married to DePalma and was in a ton of his movies. PS - Ricochet is BADASS to this day. It gets absolutely no love, and needs a remaster badly. I’d pick that up on 4K Blu-ray if we were ever so lucky. Great episode!!
Great movie guys. I can't wait to check this out on 4k. It still boggles my mind that DePalma made, "The Black Dahlia." What a piece of trash that was.
Great film, and De Palma is a master director, but I personally prefer the Blow Up film to this, only because I saw that when I was younger and the nostalgia. It's also cool to see that same actor from Blow Up in Deep Red by Argento. Objectivly Blow Out is superior though, that fireworks shot is amazing.
I watched De Palma talk about Blow Up when grabbing clips and I need to watch it. One of those titles that is intimidating to me based on it's stature.
Scarface is my fav of De Palma. My 1st viewing of Blow-Out tho, I just couldn’t get into the film UNTIL maybe the last 30 mins..AND that ending left me shocked..I mean-it really did! I wasn’t expecting that.
It’s like if a film ever had bookendings-this is it. My suggestion for those going into blow out give it a try. Pay attention to the beginning-because if I hadn’t, I would have totally lost the element of shock and awe in the emotional sense
It's pessimistic, which is why it didn't set the world on fire with audiences, but it's a melancholic, reality based pessimism. Truly beautiful ending and honest, exactly how it would end in real life. Making her demise part of his career drives it home that even in his world the real victim is nothing but an afterthought or at best, a minor element in something greater than herself.
Tbf it definitely riffs off Rear Window, so it still has that Hitchcock influence
He gets the Hitchcock comparisons on everything (and rightfully so) but Sisters takes the crown for riffing on Rear Window... I think you and I touched on Sisters before (poor wording lol).
@@russceasetheruss5360 lol good point I love Body Double too....I guess that's a riff on Vertigo right?
@@beyondz55 Body Double definitely does lol, I guess what I'm trying to say is Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director haha.
If Hitch would have turned Vertigo into a Frankie Goes to Hollywood music video for "Relax" I'd give it a 29 out of 10.
Just finished it and after not seeing it in a long time I gotta say the ending falls apart a little for me.
Slight spoilers for any that haven’t seen it.
Why doesn’t Travolta just go with Allen to give the evidence to the “reporter”? Taping her makes no sense, if he was physically there it’s safer for her and as soon as he sees Lithgow he would KNOW that’s not the guy he spoke with earlier.
Also when he’s listening to the meeting how doesn’t he hear Lithgow’s very distinctive voice and also KNOW that’s not the guy he met before.
Finally where the hell is he driving to like a bat out of hell? Crashes his Jeep for no reason.
LOL to your last point about the driving
Def gonna pick this up. Id say fav De Palma film for me is Mission Impossible. The franchise just cannot match the thermal room scene.
As a hardcore De Palma fan, would I enjoy MI? I've never seen any of them and I mostly hear people saying the first 2 are the weakest. Him directing would be my only real interest in watching it.
@@russceasetheruss5360 honestly i think M:I 1 is leagues ahead of the whole franchise. Its a smart movie during a time where people still had attention spans lol. Def check it out curious to hear what u think.
@@ryandavis5379 You have no idea how much you sold me with the "back when people had attention spans" line... I can definitely trust your recommendation and will check it out.
Femme Fatale is decent post MI De Palma. The opening sequence is dope.
Can't recall if I said it while recording, but that's the one I'd attempt. It looks like it fits in more with his older stuff.
I was expecting a 4k review.
Yeah, just a movie review with a small comment about the disc towards the end. We didn't have the disc at the time of the conversation and not too many reviews to reference either.
@@4K_Kings So you went CNN & MSNBC on us with false come on for us to watch!
We are trying to cover the movie itself around release date, but info on the disc isn't always apparent to us at the time. If we can do a 4K comparison, or mention what reviews are saying, we always will. For now, this is just a movie review. Hopefully we can do an update soon.
"Everyone's favourite de Palma movie" - it's not even in my top 3! 1) Carrie 2) Mission Impossible 3) Femme Fatale
It's not my number one either and he's one of my favorite directors. I totally understand it being seen as his best though, mainly because the lurid elements aren't as in your face as they are in his other works. Or they're overshadowed I should say, they are there, but not as sensational as Dressed to Kill, Scarface, even Carrie.
If I had to do a top 3, it's probably Sisters, Blow Out, Carrie. Body Double and Scarface would probably round out a top 5 but I'd have to think on it.
9:37 Femme Fatale
off topic... can you review a Rodney Dangerfield movie?...
We are both fans of Best Picture nominee Ladybugs.
He'd be a good candidate for a filmography review, he's basically just his persona in every film (which is in no way a bad thing, Rodney is a legend).
@@russceasetheruss5360 understood however i assume youve never seen the first movie he was in...
@@BornDistracted Earliest movie of his I've actually seen is Easy Money with Pesci. Doubt it was his first though... unless I'm completely screwing up and Easy Money was after Caddyshack.
Fun fact: I watched Easy Money for the first time a couple of months ago.
I would buy the 4K if it was released in the UK
