I brought my Elantra to Hyundai. It needs a new engine because of this slap. They said they'd only pay 50% as a courtesy. I'm appealing this now. I will be taking them to small claims if they don't cover the entire cost. How did yours go?

Misleading video. Fixing an engine is totally different thing from taking it to a dealership to get them to fix it. It's like advertising your video on an easy way to bake a cake, then telling everyone just go to a baker and ask him to bake one. Big THUMBS DOWN for not helping.

Cannot thank you enough for this video!!Everything that’s mentioned is 100% accurate. I’ve read a few of the comments..1. It does not just apply to cars that are in warranty, mine has 140K on it ( I only have the 5/100K warranty) 2. If it’s out of warranty look at agreeing to potentially pay out of pocket $1K, this is to cover them opening up the engine and verifying it’s been serviced regularly and not abused. Once that’s verified you pay nothing. Additionally you’ll need to provide service records ie) regular oil changes for them to process a ‘goodwill warranty’ through Hyundai. 3. Process is painless so far, dropped car for the day, call back in the afternoon that they’ve checked out the engine and ordered me a new one. Will call me when it’s in and provide me with a rental in the meantime. 4. This is not a one off, speaking at length to the service rep once everything was approved, he was quiet open about it. Due to a manufacturing issue at two of their US plants, when the cold weather hits metal filing can break off..
I eco your sentiment and the end of the video as well, thanks to them taking care of this we will most likely be buying our next family vehicle from them again shortly. All the best to everyone else in getting this taken care of!

Where was this? I'd like to know cause I have tge same issue with my 2013 Elantra and it also happened this week when the temperature was around -36ºC. I have been servicing my car at the dealership where I bought the car brand new and have been doing their free oil changes, however my warranty expired at 100,000 KM and I'm just at over 103,000 KM. This is in Edmonton, AB at West Edmonton Hyundai. Which one is your dealership?

    • @CJ-el5gt

I’m located in Ontario within the GTA. I don’t think that’s relevant for getting the help you need though. All of these are being processed through Hyundai itself. I was not a one off case..there was already 10 customers waiting to have their engines to come in for replacement ahead of me. As I mentioned and the video did as well this can occur in the cold weather, so I’m sure there’s a line up at every dealership right now. Tell the dealership that you heard of a known issue with the engine, ever since the cold weather hit your engine is knocking/ticking. That should start the ball rolling. Just them coming out to listen to my engine was a enough to do a quick diagnosis and schedule a follow up appt. All the best 👊

@@CJ-el5gt I just got back from the dealership in Spruce Grove, AB. They seemed to know whatvyhe issue was and did kind of told me it was "kind of a recall but not", apparently it is kind of a recall only to the cars that present the issue, but they demand to see the oil change records, and if they consider your oil changes are good, then they should honour a good faith warranty for the engine. And they will cover your rental only if your car stops running, which is not my case. So I provided them all my oil change records and they submitted the claim to Hyundai Canada, so the ball is rolling now. Thanks.

    • @CJ-el5gt
      @CJ-el5gt 5 лет назад

Awesome! Yes it’s not an ‘official’ recall, my theory is given the $ involved they are not announcing it, but dealing with it on a case by case basis. I’m not sure I agree with it but I understand it as it doesn’t effect all vehicles. As for the rental perhaps that’s down to the dealership? I’ll update once I have the new engine installed and if there’s any other intricacies to this process. Again all the best and let me know how it goes!

Cars back in my possession today! Hyundai had covered a 2019 Kona rental for the week as they ordered the engine and had it installed. (Slight but very clever sales tactic ;) My case may be a bit different on the rental coverage as I learned my engine apparently had significant issues and they wanted it in. For those technically inclined the following was replaced: Short block, cylinder head, both camshafts, both cvvts, timing chain and cover, plus all the odds and sods. Seems like the car runs smoother today then when I first drove it off the lot no joke! Feels like I got a brand new vehicle today for nothing out of pocket +5 years on...Case closed on my end! Happy hunting to the rest of you!! I feel this really comes down to the dealership either being awesome or not in supporting you. 👊

I contacted Hyundai and mentioned the "secret" warranty...and BOOM...they looked up the VIN and confirmed her car is part of the faulty production line ...and then booked it in for a inspection on Monday. We get the new engine Thursday at a cost of only the timing belt and thermostat (so $300 cdn). So to make a long story short...your heads up made me "THE MAN" this week!!! One important thing...the BIG THING is that you need meticulous oil change records from day 1. The warranty is transferable from owner to owner in this case...but if you cant prove regular oil changes were done to your car then they may decline the warranty. all you do is give warranty manager your VIN,,,state that you believe this should be covered under the TSB. they will run the VIN to insure it is within the 2011-2013 VINS as a first step. second step is they book you in for a look (no charge) and if it is piston slap...then they review your oil change records. message me with any questions! good luck!

I saw this video and took my Elantra 2015 as second owner bought from another dealership, to McGrath Hyundai in Cedar Rapids, IA. They said there has been a lawsuit and Hyundai is replacing the longblock. Piston bushings and head gaskets are going bad. They made an appointment to write a report. They will rent me a car for $30.00 a day for 2 or 3 days and I should get it back with a new engine and I think even the rental paid by Hyundai. I haven't had any trouble so far at all. They were extremely cooperative and helpful.

Sorry, but this’ll be my 2¢ about my current 2011 Elantra in relation to its issue in his video.
You guys have no idea (maybe so) how many sensors have been fixed on mine, yet, I still have a check engine light on after a couple thousands of dollars put into this, and 4 to 5 sensor replacements (per the auto repair shop) and computer updating on the car. On top of the check engine light’s inability to go away, my car just started to have a loud rattling knocking sound when I start it cold. This is at 77K miles when it started about few weeks ago. It does go away after a few loud clicks/sharp sounding knocks for about 3-5 seconds. What’s worst than this being embarrassing in is the overwhelming stress of the possibilities to what the cost could turn out to be to get this resolved! There goes 10 more white hair growths making it last way out my scalp.
Thanks for the video! I will call my local Hyundai dealer and see what they can do otherwise- this Elantra will be on auto-drive heading straight into the Pacific Ocean:)

You may have to bring it back a couple of times, it took me 3 times to get them to do it.They said the tick was normal. On the 3rd time I said I don't want it back until you fix it, here are the keys. 4 hours later they called and said you need a new motor. It is not JUST the deburing issue it could also be the thin big end rod bearing spin, piston coating taking out the cylinder walls and then debris taking out the lifters.

it still sound bad and if were to guess sounds like the valves need checked for clearance but I own a 2014 Elantra GT and some of that noise is from the mess timing set. The fact that its a plastic valve cover and not cast aluminum doesn't help to suppress the noise from the top end.

2012 sonata undergoing oil consumption test under manufacturing recall by Hyundai at dealership. every 1,200 miles I report to the dealership and they log the level and refill back to full. I think I did 4-5 of them? on average its 1.5-2 quarts low per 1,200 miles. I'm currently undergoing my final level test and will report to dealership to log the level for the final time. They then will submit the claim to corporate to get me a rental and send my car off for engine replacement. they said they may request receipts, if they do I will proceed to say "may I remind them that they are legally obligated to replace my engine, and to tell them to go fuck themselves" lol! ill keep you updated, looking forward to my new engine. My 2016 Hyundai Elantra Gt has the same issue. It only has 64k miles on it. It broke down in the side of the road. They towed it to the dealership, and took 3 weeks to inspect it under the warranty, due to the dealership having only one Hyundai mechanic. It's the only Hyundai dealership within 3 hours of where I live, so I was forced to wait those 3 weeks. During this time they would not give me a rental until the car was looked at, and confirmed to be covered under the warranty. Once they confirmed it was covered, it took 3 extra days to get me a rental. I was also told it could take up to 3 months to even get an engine. As of today it's been a month and zero progress has been made on replacing the engine. I'm almost to the point of asking them to buy the car back, because I have no trust in a new engine, even with the extra warranty on the new engine. This was my first brand new car, and I absolutely loved the style, speed, and cargo room. I really liked the fact that they had a great warranty. Which at the time I had no idea how much I would need that warranty. I've had the car for 3 years now, and I've had to replace both front wheel bearings (both at 30k miles) a traction control sensor (at 43k mies), the alternator (at 52k miles), and now the engine (at 64k miles). I have zero confidence that this car will make it to 100k miles without any other issues. Everything has been covered under the warranty so far. My worry is after the warranty is gone, it's going to be a money pit.

I think you replaced your engine for no reason. These engines are louder than others anyway. It is just the lifters ticking. They are louder when the engine first starts up and on very cold days. You also should only use OEM oil filters. It helps. At any rate, it seems to only be the 2011-2014 models. No problems at all for 2015 or 2016 models. Glad I waited till the bugs were completely ironed out. Fantastic car. The newer models are bland as hell in design.

It is the same deal, they knew there were defects with these engines. One of the pistons was flopping around scoring the hole and it just would not start one day. I was getting camshaft position codes and trouble starting at times and also exhaust sputtering. I remember seeing this video when I was having the problems and came across it again trying to hear the sound. Sometimes it doesn't even make the noise. @@bloeski

That piston slap really killed gas mileage. No way that it should only be getting 393km on a full tank. Should be more

Depends on the way it's driven. It averages your total gas mileage until it's reset.

I do pizza delivery with my 13 EGT in a city and on a full tank due to that low mpg it doesn’t get up to 200mi lol

@@Michael_Ruiter dang that's horrible. I have a 2009 Elantra GL and used to do food delivery with it in 2020 but the worst I'd get on a full tank is 470km, max is 630km if mostly highway. Something is definitely wrong with your engine but these issues are usually easy to fix. Something you could do is change all spark plugs and igntion wires, change fuel filter... these things are pretty cheap except fuel filter which might be around $100
