    as someone who is only gaining a passing knowledge of the TCG from vids like this, I find it super interesting. although the one thing that will always bug me is when the type names just barely differ from what they are in literally every other form of pokemon media - "lightning" and "metal" drive me up the goddamn wall, why isn't it just "electric" and "steel" lmao

      @DJones1048 Год назад

      I think the thing that got me the most when I started is that there are alot of video games typings lumped under single card typings. Like ghost and poison essentially "dont exist" cuz it's all classified under psychic. But the difference is made in typings through weakness/resistance. Rock and ground is another example where they dont exist but are lumped under "fighting."

      @spotsthecat7913 Год назад +1

      I think if he gonna do EX, he should split it into Gen V EX and Gen VI EX cards (or at least by years) to make it fair since earlier EX cards doesn't really stand a chance against latest ones. Don't forget there are ex (lowercase) in Gen 3 too, so it might be interesting as well

    • @MindofInstincts
      @MindofInstincts Год назад +2

      @@spotsthecat7913 he already did the lowercase ex Pokemon and yeah it’s exclusive to the lowercase ex Pokemon so he’ll most likely do it how you suggested it!!
      I’d like to see the best LV X Pokémon and best Prime Pokémon! (Maybe LEGENDS too, but there wasn’t too many of them)
      Edit: I commented this before watching the video and now I’m realizing this is basically the LV X video… my bad lol

    • @spotsthecat7913
      @spotsthecat7913 Год назад

      @@MindofInstincts lol yeah, this is the SP Lv X 🤣. To be fair, with only Garchomp C, Luxray GL etc, those cards doesn't have their full power that they were infamous for, so it's kinda mandatory to include their Lv. X too
      For PRIME, i guess Magnezone and Kingdra could be listed. I remember at least how I have fun with Kingdra Prime in 2010. Steelix deck of 2010 was annoyingly good as well. LEGENDS at other hand, there are not many of them and some of them aren't even competitively viable, sadly 😔

      I must be missing something here. The symbol for an elite four member's Pokemon does not even remotely resemble the kanji for the number 4 (四). Zooming in on the symbol, the top of it kinda looks like the kanji for river (川), but the bottom part of it makes it look much more like a picture of a first than any kanji I know of. I thought you might be referring to a different SP symbol, but all the other ones are English letters (G, GL, FB, C, M)

  • @HopUpOutDaBed
    @HopUpOutDaBed Год назад +7

    you wouldn't believe how long it took me to realize FB = frontier brain, C = champion, GL = gym leader, and that they weren't just random letters at the end of a pokemon's name. I knew G was galactic though, just never made the other connections for some reason.

    SP Format was something else. As the video alluded to not only were the SP Pokemon good but the support around them was insane (and I think they warrant a follow up video). The deck was consistent, fast and had access to things unheared of at it's time. Pokemon Power Spray was the first card of it's type that allowed a player to basically negate the ability of an opposing Pokemon from the hand much like how you can in Yu-Gi-Oh! nowadays. Except Power Spray came first as YGO's equivalent, Effect Veiler was printed about a year after it.

    • @spotsthecat7913
      @spotsthecat7913 Год назад

      Yeah, Power Spray is one and only "hand trap" in PTCG if I remember correctly. Kuriboh and D.D. Crow come even earlier, but they didn't negate anything, so i get what you mean!

    The SP and EX Pokemon being basic Pokemon regardless of what they're based on is really frustrating because it often pushes stage 2 decks out of competition as they can't keep up with the pace these decks create.

    I actually don't know who that trainer on the Blaziken cards is. If she's from the video games, she must be from Emerald or Platinum, because I'd definitely remember someone like that from Ruby/Sapphire or Pearl/Diamond.
    Luxray topping a list makes me happy. I've a soft spot for Luxray as it's a great Pokémon for going through the game but not much else.

    Power spray was a critical aspect of the format that included its own micro ruling of sorts. After declaring your intention to use a PokePower, you had to wait 3 seconds to see if your opponent wanted to use a Power spray before completing the PokePower action. Power spray is extremely powerful and correctly timed use could cripple your opponent.

    • @spotsthecat7913

      In DPPt era, most basics only got +10 weakness damage (could be more if they can't evolve), stage 1 got +20, and stage 2 +30. Lv. Xs mostly got 2× Weakness (except Machamp Lv. X and Torterra Lv. X IIRC). But some legendary like Regigigas and SP Pokemon got 2× weakness even in their base form

    I remember when Pokemon SP were current, and everyone was happy when HGSS didn't continue them, as big bulky basics were the definition of unfun, and Pokemon seemed to have noticed. The playerbase as a whole breathed a sigh of relief, as stage 2 decks would again be viable (as soon as all the Pokemon SP rotated out) and the game could finally go back to normal.
    And then they brought in Pokemon EX just a bit into BW, right when Pokemon SP were rotating out.

    In your introduction you say that the unique thing about SP is that they are basic Pokemon that can immediately be put into play (like with EX and V). However, top of your list are Luxray and Garchomp Level X which had to be played on other cards (like GX would in Sun and Moon) so are not basic Pokemon.

    • @spotsthecat7913
      @spotsthecat7913 Год назад

      I think you got it wrong, dude. Yeah, Garchomp and Luxray are evolved Pokémon, but the SP Pokémon CARDS are basics no matter which evolutionary stage they are. What DexLogs mean basic pokemon is the type of the card, not the actual evolution stage of Pokémon. Hope it helps, man

      @@spotsthecat7913 are these basic Pokemon? On both Garchomp and Luxray cards it says "Level up: put onto (Pokemon) C" so I assumed they weren't basic cards as you have to play them onto a card already in play.
