  • With Fuji recently releasing some new lenses updating some of their current XF budget line of lenses with minor but needed improvement, I decided to make a video about the XF 55-200mm lens as this lens still offers great image quality in my opinion, especially for the price point. I'll be discuss about the usability/ergonomics, image quality and then leading into my conclusion why I recommend it to many.

    The people saying it's an OK lens. Andy Mumford uses it a lot and the results he gets are incredible. Maybe it's not the lens that's "ok" but the person using it

      Yes, you are very right, it is always the people using it. The people using will have their own requirements from the gear that they use, whether it is the performance, usability, design and what have you.
      Yes, I totally agree that the results he produces is incredible and this lens can really deliver incredible results, I am not going to deny that. But you also have to see when other people say that it's an "okay" lens, what do they really refer to... I really do like the sharpness control, contrast control and the chromatic aberration control on this lens. It can really produces amazing quality for the lens in its class. However, when using it in the way that I shoot, it has some trouble when zooming in through certain atmosphere (which is normal for a lens in this class just a little terrible when compare to Canon, Nikon and Sigma offerings in this class of a lens). Furthermore, for the price, not having a weather sealing is also a big deal and the fact that the operating switches on the lens are so easy to turn makes it hard to operate multiple cameras with this lens attached to one of them...
      These points are of course generalising points from my side and from the way I use the lens (hence the title of my video; "my thoughts")... It is not a review but just a video based on my opinion that was based on how I use the lens. Again, in terms of image quality, I mostly agree with Andy but since he and I have way different requirements as well as many other photographers also have different requirements, it is just simply not fair to use other people's words/requirements of the gear to judge the rest of the people who also uses the gear.
      I hope you understand at least a little bit where I am coming from and that me saying "okay" does not refer entirely to the image quality. I am very sorry that you don't like my video and I will do my best to improve my future contents.
      Thank you very much for watching, hope you have a good time, stay safe and have fun shooting.

    Hey David ( I just love this guy ) Late comment but am in market for upgrading a zoom lens in the Fuji System. A couple of points, in the interest of helping fellow Subscribers, and yourself: Yes, a lot of zooms can act as “dust magnets,” but here are a few tips I’ve used over the years, to help mitigate the issue. I noticed you zooming in and out rather quickly, in the video. That is the same way a rocket blower works. S. L. O. W. Down whilst zooming, and it will lessen the effect! Also, if in a dusty dry environment, occasionally “wipe” the zoomed out exposed inner part of the barrel. And if One wants to be really OCD, well, use an improvised rain/dust shield, or buy one of the name brand ones. But in the end, it really comes down to the fact, dust is all round us, and it is inevitable it will find it’s way into our stuff!
    Great video as always my Man. Stay safe, and Happy Shooting! 👍✌📷😉

    Thanks for your advice on this lens. Great photos too. Makes me curious to see your portrait photos, with this lens. Cheers!

      Thank you for the compliment as well as for watching. I did have some travel portraits in there but it was very minor as I mainly use this lens for travel/fun photography. But this lens is still great and the for the reason that you can zoom in very tight means that you still can get a really compressed background as well as nice blurry background when shooting portraits as well. :-) Thank you very much for watching and have fun shooting :-)

    They can’t put figures on the aperture ring, it’s a variable aperture lens, this means the aperture may alter as you zoom while the ring stays put.

      Great comment Stephen! I don't understand how so many people don't “get it?” How da hella you gonna have aperture markings when it is variable aperture? Peace

    Oh, the “haziness” you speak of is most likely caused by atmospheric conditions, as longer telephotos tend to accentuate the radiational heat waves coming off the ground/objects. This is more pronounced on warmer sunny days. Try to avoid these situations, if possible, or shoot so the effect is lessened.

    I own the 55-200mm, for the price is not bad. The 50-140mm 2.8 is much better, but more expensive, the 55-200mm is at sweet spot.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  3 года назад

      Thanks for sharing, yeah the 50-140 will produce better images and I especially like the result from the 50-140mm more from the further focal range is it is much sharper, has better contrast as well as having the benefit of the f/2.8. But it was simply too expensive for because I already have the 70-200L f/2.8 from Canon for my main system... I would be able to justify paying the amount if Fujifilm was my main system that.. But I only use it for travel and street photography and once in a while for work~~ So the 55-200mm was good enough for me on that field :-) But thanks again for watching and for sharing. Hope you have a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting:-)

    I am not familiar with this lens, but a lot of longer lenses will have lower contrast, or appear “hazy,” if shot wide open, or close to wide open. Stopping down can usually help, or just “pull” the zoom back a little from the longest focal length. Peace

    Happen to be wearing some fine Sony studio headphones...music sounded nice and thick. Too bad about the hand clap sample, though. The real world issue of the zoom is the same issue for pocket digitals.Pocket digital zooms draw dust in which finally settles on the sensors. This zoom will also draw dust in which will settle on the rear element.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  3 года назад

      Yeah, the zoom of this lens (and many other non-weather sealed lenses actually pumps a lot of air and consequently inside the lens barrel ending up at the rear element. Luckily it is very easy to take it apart (but please find a super clean environment to do so) and clean the rear element. For me, the downside of it isn't how easy the dust gets in but rather (what I discovered more recently) how the contrast actually decreases quite a bit when using it at the more telephoto end of the zoom when compare to similar range of lenses from other brands...

    • @georgedavall9449
      @georgedavall9449 Год назад

      Yeah well I happen to be wearing a fine pair of Senns, bro. Sony baloney, pffft! People agonize over dust, which I gotta say, ya aint gonna escape it! Dust is EVERYWHERE! It’s gonna find its way into cameras and lenses. Even during manufacturing. Best way to avoid least amount of dust is avoid zooming in dry dusty conditions, or keep to minimum. Get a weather sealed lens such as the XF70-300, or try to find a zoom lens that does not extend when zooming. Relax, eat a bag of chips, take it easy, and get ya a pair of Sennheisers! 😯 😆 😂✌

    For some reason, the optical viewfinder on my Fuji X-Pro3 doesn't zoom in and out when I use it. I just get a small square box in my viewfinder. When I zoom while looking at the screen, there is no problem. It really bothers me, though, as I always use the optical viewfinder. I might have to sell it again for this very reason.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад

      I think that it's very normal if the optical viewfinder doesn't zoom when the lens zoom. It is a range finder rather and range finder only have a limited amount of focal length that the finder can either zoom in and out or have the prediction lines for. So having a telephoto lens like the 55-200mm is just too much for the range finder. This is the case with any brand. Hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

    Do you just correct your hazy shots using de-haze in post=processing? I take it the aperture settings show in the viewfinder and LCD screen. Disappointing that Fuji have not out them on the lans

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  2 года назад +1

      I don't really de-haze the images since doing that would increase more contrast than how much I usually want. So it really depends on the image, if some are really badly affected, then I would just have to turn it to black and white or don't use it at all. That being said, it's also worth noting that sometime the haze is also due to lens having to magnify through a lot of atmosphere that can also cause the effect of haze as well as softness. This can be a problem is certain parts of the world. For example, I had a lot of trouble using it in Spain more than in the Netherlands due to the difference in atmospheric condition. I think that this lens really suffers from haze but in some cases, the location and the environment also plays a huge role in emphasising it as well.
      Hope that helps a little. Thank you so much for watching, really means a lot. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      It techically works but I don't recommend it simply because of how much lesser light will be hitting the sensor thus slower to operate... Thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      I’ve sent it for the full inspection as well as tried my other copies of the lens and still showed the same results. I am not saying that it’s a bad lens but it definitely has flaws as well☺️

    I love the lens' weakness. This gives it's own personality or character. For some they don't like it but for me, its imperfection adds to the Artistry to the photos.
