Surfing is definitely not like any other sport, the conditions dictate our fun level and we need to be ready every day. I've been married 50 years. Prior to getting married I told my wife I have two loves, her and surfing and it is two completely different types of love. She understood this from day 1 and knows in the morning if the waves are good I go surfing and if not I'm hers for the day. She's never ever forced me to choose between the two and recognized early that surfing keeps me level headed, she now tells me when I look agitated that I need a wave, lol. The 1st question he asks Kelly is a no brainer for surfers.

What an incredible ride this man has had… and is still having. And to be as humble and approachable as he is given his immense talents is really something else. He completely obliterates any excuse anyone could have for being an arrogant jerk because of their abilities and/or status.
I feel blessed to have been a part of this universe for much of my life, however peripherally. One of the best and most influential generations surfing has ever seen. Great stuff!
Thanks for everything, Kelly. See you out there again soon🌊🤙🏼

The headwind against professional surfing and the counter culture drug use which was surfing culture that this man sprouted up through was tremendous. So many were "cheering against him" that being a fan of his could make one a target in much of our surfing world. Surfing is a singularly unique athletic pursuit/art form. What Kelly Slater has done with his lifetime in the surfing world is more than just 11 world titles. He breaths the same "rare air" that Rickson Gracie breaths. There is no other athlete equally as worthy of the title GOAT. As I age, I have become a huge fan. I hope he never retires from professional surfing. I also hope I can spray him in the line up some day.

Kelly takes the opportunity to prove people wrong when they say something is not possible. Definitely a man who listens to all sides of things and is not at all narrow minded. He is most likely a great father when it comes to helping make decisions and understanding common sense

KS’s book, “Pipe Dreams,” left a huge impression, blowing away any sense of pretentiousness.
A lot of credit to his Mom, since someone close had to influence his being the best person -not just the best surfer.

to the helping the depressed and suicidal question. They mostly will not be asking for help until it is to late , it is more on us to try and notice what is going on with them. When your that depressed you have lost so much hope that you believe its the only way, and your not proud of where your life has come to and just want it to be over. Its a very dark pit and takes alot to climb out of. But if it is noticed by some one it is possible to help them. My mother in law saw it in me , ( i had hurt my back and could not work , or do anything with out major pain , and did not feel like a man cause i could not provide for my wife and 4 daughters, doctors were very little help. after about 3 years of fighting i was done.) Most people had gotten used to my struggle and i had a good front that i was doing okay, but i had decided that i was going to ended it. she noticed it and one day told me to write on a paper what is making me depressed, then turn it over and write very thing i could possibly think of to be thankful for . So i went home and did. i had 3 things making me depressed, 1 i am always in pain, 2 i can't work or do much of anything i crawl around on the floor may times to get around the house, and 3 i can not provide for my family. Turn the paper over started writing and its good to do it and list them cause that is part of the prosses but the list of things to think of to be thankful for is literally endless, you can always find some thing you missed and take for granted. I literally started crying, and i do not do that easily. It started me to change from focusing on the negative to having an attitude of gratitude . It was still a long time and work to get out of that pit, but i saw the light at the top and thank God i started climbing up. 30 years later i have 10 grandkids and live in Hawaii, life is great. Still not easy but i am so blessed. So it is really on us to try and notice what is going on in others that they can really be hiding from everyone.

I still get the compulsion. I lost my first close friend in 6th grade to suicide, and four others over the years. One of them with close to five years sobriety. Strangely, when everything is "good", the compulsion hits strongest. So far, "not yet" has intervened. I hope we both die of "natural causes". G-d Bless

He’s the GOAT all of sports. Just because surfing isn’t a major sport, it still takes the same mastery as football, basketball, etc. No one has dominated a sport for so long as Kelly. Michael Jordan is a close 2nd, but falls short because he wasn’t able to have success playing near the end of his career. And Tom Brady is also a close 2nd, but football is more of a team sport not like surfing and basketball. Tom was a master of attracting great players to come to play. Tom was great, don’t get me wrong.
